To find it amusing that Nick Cave was at the coronation?

Sorry, another coronation one. I didn't even watch it, just looked at some of the news coverage.

Anyway, I'd like to imagine that someone organising it thought "you know what would take this occasion to the next level, the dark sexuality that only Nick Cave would bring" Grin

I know a lot of us MNetters are fans of Nick Cave.

You know what, I think it’s great that he thought about why he wanted to go and expressed it really well. From the Guardian - “what I am also not is so spectacularly incurious about the world and the way it works, so ideologically captured, so damn grouchy, as to refuse an invitation to what will more than likely be the most important historical event in the UK of our age. Not just the most important, but the strangest, the weirdest.”

It’s so refreshing to see someone who doesn’t stick to the same old dogmatic lines but approaches an occasion with nuance and good humour and just makes their own mind up. God, it’s rare. Never been a huge fan but he’s gone up in my estimation here.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 07/05/2023 09:35

I saw a great picture of him and former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams arriving together. Nice to see a mix of people!

AnonymousHippopotamus · 07/05/2023 09:35

Well put @AtomicBlondeRose

Those would also be my reasons for going, if invited, but I doubt I would express them so eloquently Smile

Exactly @AnonymousHippopotamus. Am I a Royalist? Not really, though I kind of liked the Queen. Do I think the whole thing is a waste of time and money? Yeah, but if I was invited would I go? Fuck yeah!

Malarandras · 07/05/2023 09:38

He did a brilliant post explaining why he went. It was on Twitter, worth a read.

JulieHoney · 07/05/2023 09:39

I love the way he said his younger self was not a guide he should look to, because his younger self was madder than a box of frogs. I couldn’t have loved him more for that.

(Deranged, I think was the actual word. Adorable, but deranged (

commonground · 07/05/2023 09:40

Yes I think he and Justin are good mates. I thought his reasons for attending were pretty cool.

Plus, just for old times sake....was he carrying a water bottle?

LaurelGrove · 07/05/2023 09:43

Who doesn't love Nick Cave? I don't think of him as a Republican or even particularly left wing. Not sure he gave much thought to politics back in his Birthday Party days and now, everything I've read by him suggests he has a fairly nuanced position on political issues. It was funny to see him there - i was watching with a friend and we spent some happy time looking at old Birthday Party clips on YouTube.
The real question is not why he went but how he made it onto the list? Is Camilla a Bad Seeds fan, perhaps?

Littlesprouts · 07/05/2023 09:43

I saw him get a lot of flack from virtue-signallers on social media. But I thought his reasoning made perfect sense and reflected my own feelings about the whole thing very well. I'd have done the same!

LlynTegid · 07/05/2023 09:44

I agree that his explanation for accepting the invitation raised my estimation of him.

NowZeusHasLainWithLeda · 07/05/2023 09:45

Agreed.
Shows a maturity of thought that the very confident and supremely intelligent have.
My (non British ) DH was asking me who the 40 odd % who don't want a monarchy are, and I said, well, all of us 30 years ago. We'd have been all so edgy and thinking ourselves as cool as fuck in dissing it all.
Then we grew up and realised there's worse out there.

Jonad · 07/05/2023 09:46

I enjoyed the idiots getting het up about it.

AtomicBlondeRose · 07/05/2023 09:49

Isn’t it something in this day and age that giving your (considered and qualified) support to something is seen as far more controversial that protesting against it. Knee jerk cancellation is the new mainstream.

AnonymousHippopotamus · 07/05/2023 10:29

I wonder what Rowan's favourite song is? Maybe a bit of Stagger Lee in the vestry to get psyched up on a Sunday morning?

Never heard of him.

IglesiasPiggl · 07/05/2023 10:52

I enjoyed him being there too. I do wonder how they select the celebs to attend. What are the criteria do you think?

Never heard of him.

This isn't the thread for you then, unless you fancy a quick Google?

I just found the "everybody loves Nick Cave" comment quite funny..... "Who?"

I don't think I love him, I'm not sure who he is but I will have a google and see.

Iwasafool · 07/05/2023 11:18

Just had a look and I can confirm I don't love him, don't know him. His explanation for going sounds very well thought out so maybe I should look out for him in future.

Why comment then? Move along.

He has an extensive catalogue of great music, you're in for a treat.

That is fab, I love Nick Cave and honestly he summed up why I am fascinated by all the coronation stuff.

I felt, as a punk in my youth, that I should still be totally anti monarchy, but oddly I am not, and he summed up why.

do you think Camilla has a dark side then? I like the idea of that!
