To think William should have made more effort

To learn that one line pledge to his father? He read from a card looking sideways most of the way through it, and he looked like he was bored and rushing through it. Looked terrible on screen.

I know he's lazy but it wasn't too much to ask for, was it - to memorise that line and at least fake a bit of sincerity?

I do hope not. Camilla shoplifted them especially for the occasion.

Camilla uses them as ash trays.

I'm loving the way republicans are converting people to their cause by the use of polite, reasoned discourse rather than insults and abuse.

She managed to get those shelf brackets out of B&Q no bother.

Shelf brackets?! Is that what they used for holding the screens together for the King's mid-ceremony pee break? So kind of her to chip in with the building work!

Spinninggyro · 06/05/2023 21:13

I think you need to bear in mind that William must have been aware that he would probably be in his father’s position when Charles dies. And that his oldest son is in the same position. I suspect it was very stressful.

what does anyone gain by coming on here to nitpick on such a tint bit of the ceremony?

HamBone · 06/05/2023 21:14

It did look abit weird, but what I noticed was the loving way Charles looked at William. His face softened from the solemn gaze he’d been maintaining, it was nice to see.

the80sweregreat · 06/05/2023 21:20

William was probably told to ' read this ' do that ' etc , same as all the others were.
This isn't a normal situation for any of those people there even people like the Archbishop. Coronations don't come around that often.
I felt sorry for Kate having to wear that awful outfit tbh ! She is normally so well dressed and has lovely clothes, but I want keen on that get up. I Liked the tiara though.

Really? So you royalists are quite happy to excuse a flippant, sub-par, banal performance from the HEIR because sincerity is too much to expect?

Clearly I'm too idealistic and expect too much.

I'm not remotely a Royalist, so you're wrong there with that assumption.

I'm just not nastily nit-picking based on unrealistic expectations like you are.

Maireas · 06/05/2023 21:21

mid ceremony pee break 😂😂

Emotionalsupportviper · 06/05/2023 21:26

I don't think it was laziness - I think it was stress.

I'm sure he DID learn that line, but wanted to make sure he didn't fluff it - can you not imagine what a long, intense and exhausting day (in fact weeks!) it has been?

I thought that both the King and Queen looked exhausted (Queen Camilla definitely had a huge lift in mood once the crowning bit was over). Wouldn't surprise me if they hadn't slept properly for weeks - what with the complexity of the service, the huge numbers of people worldwide watching their every movethe criticisms, the "Not My King" crowd, that idiot throwing shotgun cartridges over the wall and causing security concerns, miserable weather - and, of course, the Spectre at the Feast, and wondering what the "Instagram-loving Bitch Wife" was plotting now as her next "Look at MEEEeeeeeEEeeee" ploy.

I thought the part where William pledged his allegiance, and kissed his father's cheek, was incredibly moving. I filled up.

(BTW Princess Anne- nice hat! Grin)

PollyPeptide · 06/05/2023 21:29

It's exactly the same. He's selective with the figures he chooses to use. He quotes the Mirror in saying that the ceremony today cost £250m. But he doesn't quote the rest of the Mirrors report that the weekend is expected to boost the economy by £8b. Why not if he's all about full and reliable disclosure?

Fairowing · 06/05/2023 21:32

All our house said the same - he barely looked him in the eye. There were at least two key points of three words he could have memorised or at the time could have scanned quickly and then said to his father and king with some sincerity

wanttokickoffbutcant · 06/05/2023 21:32

Last time I went to vote I was asked my address and I had to look at my polling card - total brain blank.

Emotionalsupportviper · 06/05/2023 21:32

LlynTegid · 06/05/2023 17:46

His late mother got Charles's full name mixed up, in his shoes I would not wish to make a mistake on such an occasion.

IIRC Diana got Charles' name confused when they got married, and she was repeating it after it was said to her (Charles Arthur Phillip George instead of Charles Phillip Arthur George).

Under those circumstances, I'd have probably needed a cue card, a name badge and an instruction sheet on breathing in, then breathing out.

Me an' all @DamnAndDashIt plus audio instructions on how to walk - "Left foot, right foot, left foot . . ."

GodSaveTheClean · 06/05/2023 17:48

They were all out on the lash last night; he’s probably knackered. Zara and Mike rolled in at 2am apparently. No wonder Kate’s got bags today!

I don't think the Waleses were there.

DeeLasVegas · 06/05/2023 21:33

DamnAndDashIt · 06/05/2023 17:48

Have they done away with the Royals board?

Anyway, YABU. Under those circumstances, I'd have probably needed a cue card, a name badge and an instruction sheet on breathing in, then breathing out.

This.

Plus a one of the moving walkways they have at airports (travelator?) so I didn’t have to worry about stumbling in front of millions.

Norriscolesbag · 06/05/2023 21:36

None of us have any idea why he needed that card. He could have awful memory, terrible anxiety and needed it for reassurance or just be plain lazy.

Until something impacts on me and I know the full story, it’s not my business.

MummyJ12 · 06/05/2023 21:40

At my dad’s funeral I read a poem from a card that I’d written myself! I was just so stressed and scared and that card was what a focused on rather than what was going on. I wasn’t lazy, I was just really anxious, like I can imagine William to have been…..

Berlinlover · 06/05/2023 21:40

It was my favourite moment of the Coronation. YABVU

the80sweregreat · 06/05/2023 21:41

Kudos to the women today.
Penny Mordaunt for having to hold two heavy swords for ages in heels
Princess Anne for riding her horse.
Kate for carrying off a strange outfit
Charlotte for keeping her little brother in check ( I bet she did at times)
Women actually walking in heels , I wished I could !

She actually said Philip Charles Arthur George. Used the wrong first name completely! Bless.

Today could mumsnet get any lower?

Keep getting proved wrong every time I think ‘no’ to myself.

Just when you think that things can’t get any goadier or frothier someone outcunts the frother before them.

There should be a league table.

Ah - thank you!

I knew she'd got it wrong but couldn't quite remember how she'd mixed it up.
