To think William should have made more effort

To learn that one line pledge to his father? He read from a card looking sideways most of the way through it, and he looked like he was bored and rushing through it. Looked terrible on screen.

I know he's lazy but it wasn't too much to ask for, was it - to memorise that line and at least fake a bit of sincerity?

@Emeraldrings The Queen died over a year ago.

BMW6 · 06/05/2023 23:10

So OP now you've seen the video I posted of Prince Philip reading the pledge from a card do you now accept that the cards are part of the protocol?
Not William being lazy?

PollyPeptide · 06/05/2023 23:23

BMW6 · 06/05/2023 23:00

Prince Philip DID have the pledge written on a card exactly the same as for William.

I've just played the video and you can see the cleric leaning down with the card for Philip to read to his left side.

He DID!! And he looked at it while he said it. Lol.

Oh, @CurlewKate , eat your words. 😉

@Emeraldrings The Queen died over a year ago.

No, she didn't. She died in September.

michaelmacrae · 06/05/2023 23:27

@BMW6 Nope. I don't look at the Fail because 1) I don't want to give them any clicks and 2) I refuse to remove my ad blocker because I don't want them to make any money from it.

I did say that cue cards are ok to have as a backup, but not to RELY on the way W did, he basically side-eyed the king during what is supposed to be a 'meaningful' pledge (Or apparently not meaningful according to Mners here🙄).

He IS lazy because he should have took the trouble to memorise it! It was two lines FFS, and the second one was four words! LOL

Say what now.....

Ponoka7 · 06/05/2023 23:32

I agree OP. William had less lines than my primary aged grandchildren. He needs lessons in facial expressions and the pair of them need to get their heads around working for their money.

Itslookinglikeabeautifulday · 06/05/2023 23:38

^Honestly, I wouldn't even trust myself remember my own name in front of hundreds of million of people watching from around the world.

Prince Philip wasn't lazy. He saw dangerous active service. He did almost as many royal attendances as the Queen. And he didn't retire til he was 96.
He read the pledge too.

BMW6 · 06/05/2023 23:56

You don't have to use the Mail link OP - it'll be on YouTube.

You can see Philip has his head turned to the left to read the words.

Not looking at the Queen as he reads them aloud.

Just like William.

@Emeraldrings The Queen died over a year ago.

Are there only eight months in a year now? She died in September 2022. It is now May 2023.

AskMeMore · 06/05/2023 20:11

No the 14 year old boy was the only one to take it seriously and do prep. The rest knew they did not need to do this.

He was 14?! He looks about 8!

Prince Phillip didn't have a visible cue card!

Yes he did.

How many people watched the queen's coronation? No one had tvs for a start. It couldn't be televised round the world. And no one pored over every word to check if it was correct. If he made a mistake, no one would have noticed or cared. If William made a mistake, there'd be memes everywhere and websites would be set up over it!
Times have changed a lot in 70 years.

The late Queens coronation was the first Coronation to be televised and people with a television had Coronation parties in their front room so family and friends could watch it with them.

Juanne · 07/05/2023 06:38

I thought you meant his hair. He definitely needs to shave the skirt off, how ridiculous does that look!

SquarePegInRoundHole · 07/05/2023 06:49

I agree with you. He had one line which he's had 40 years to learn. He should have been looking at his father if he thinks any of us should believe in this madness.

The little lad at the beginning managed without a card

I was coming here to say that. He was brilliant wasn’t he. Clear, concise, confident and did his bit perfectly.

Didn’t say anything about number of people watching so unsure why you’ve made such an obnoxious comment. Simply that such a young child managed to memorise more than a grown adult who is the future king. And yes it is a low bar that people don’t expect him to learn what to say. He needs to step up. Anyone can just read from a card.

It wasn’t an obnoxious comment. It was a perfectly clear one. You can’t compare your child’s nativity to a royal coronation.

Yes your child may have learnt their words. William no doubt learned and practiced them too but when you have the eyes of the world (and many people ready to rip you to shreds) you probably want to just read them to make sure it’s right. None of that pressure will hit a child in their school play so not even comparable

CurlewKate · 07/05/2023 08:00

"William no doubt learned and practiced them too but when you have the eyes of the world (and many people ready to rip you to shreds) you probably want to just read them to make sure it’s right."
Not when it is LITERALLY your job to do this sort of thing! It's a bit like saying to an actor in the National Theatre "There's a lot of people watching- you'd better have your script with you to make sure it's right."

TheUsualChaos · 07/05/2023 08:07

I think he just found the whole moment very awkward. He probably knew the line but it looked to me that he read the cue instead of looking Charles straight in the eye the whole time. Tbh I would have found that a bit weird and awkward too 🤷‍♀️ having said that, he is next in line to throne ffs and should tried to work on how he presented himself in the ceremony as it did look pretty odd and unrehearsed.

Qilin · 07/05/2023 08:44

You don't know he's lazy unless you've actually met him and spent a lot of time with him. Otherwise you know what the mass media has suggested or out your own bias in to him.

It's a huge event and one which can't go wrong. It is being televised across the world and is one of the biggest historical events in the country at this time.

If he'd slipped over his words it would have lived with him forever, being out into memes, shared in tv clips constantly, commented in forever.

Every single person involved pretty much read their lines from cue cards or books, regardless of how many lines they had.

I really do think some people just chose to find fault regardless of what they'd done.

Qilin · 07/05/2023 08:46

Comedycook · 06/05/2023 17:52

Oooohhh all the forelock tuggers are out today.

Pathetic.

It's their job. Stop thinking they're doing us a favour.

Irrelevant.

I'd have thought the same if it was someone getting married, someone being invested into a new company/organisation, someone being made president or prime minister, someone doing a speech for a big event, etc.

Even more so if it was being televised to a huge audience and of great historical important. Because it was of historical importance, regardless of whether you're bothered about the royal family or not.

It is LITERALLY the job of anyone who officiates a wedding to read words and they often have their “script” with them and nobody seems to have an issue with that

You can like or dislike the royals but if people don’t like them then there is much more to be upset about regarding yesterday than whether people read off a card or not

Comedycook · 06/05/2023 17:48

It's their job though...they should do it properly. Remember a few lines. Actors manage it all the time.

They don't. Never watched a blooper real? I mean, sometimes they get them perfectly first time but often it takes several takes, a d they always know they can do it again if they mess it up.
