To think Camilla should not have been crowned Queen

Viviennemary · 06/05/2023 16:38

She should have been Princess Consort as we were told she would be. Instead the usual airbrushing of history to try and make her acceptable by clever spinning. And positive press. Bit sickening since Edward VIII had to abdicate over marrying a divorced woman.

The reason it matters is because Camilla is quite likely to outlive Charles. This way, she will be the Dowager Queen. Otherwise, she'd be cast out as an irrelevant nobody. Charles is looking out for her - which is quite sweet. His mother didn't care about this, clearly, and neither will the Diana fan club. But I've got nothing against him wanting to secure her position - it's a natural thing.

MorganKitten · 06/05/2023 18:23

Queen Elizabeth wanted Camilla to use Queen, if she didn’t people would have still said she was disrespectful

AnnesObstructiveFeather · 06/05/2023 18:24

QEII didn’t just say Camilla would be Queen Consort - which she would when married to King Charles, that’s just fact - she specifically said:

“Camilla will be known as Queen Consort”

There’s a subtle difference. These are her exact words.

I think it would have been respectful to Prince Philip if she stayed Queen consort as he never became a king. But she is Queen now so we time to embrace and celebrate it!

If she'd been Princess Consort, she'd be Dowager Princess.

But I now wonder...if Charles had died before becoming King, what would she be? Couldn't be PoW any more...

It’s like no one can ever be forgiven for their mistakes in mumsnet world . They are underneath it all human .

A family with similar problems to many others but under a microscope of scrutiny. And they can’t hide in a corner . They just get up and carry on with duties .

Why would that be more respectful to him? Surely, by that logic, she should be Princess Camilla, but that would be an issue too.

At no point did QEII say she did not want Camilla to be called Queen.

She specifically used the phrase Queen Consort. Whereas her mother was just known as Queen Elizabeth. I think she knew exactly what she was saying.

I guess we all have different interpretations of what QEII meant.

There are only 2 types of Queen.

Queen Regnant - Monarch's.
Queen Consort - married to the King (Monarch).

Both are just called Queen.
QEII knew this, so you're correct, she knew exactly what she was saying. It's just a pity it seems so many of her subjects don't care to understand.

It's not really a subtle difference. Originally (2005) the plan was that she would be known as Princess Consort. The speech last year changed that.

What? First of all he's dead, second of all there are rules to how titles work. They don't cease to exist just because male superiority in rank didn't happen to benefit this one particular guy.

DowningStreetParty · 06/05/2023 18:32

She should be and it’s fine.

He never became King because he would then have outranked the actual Queen. Which he couldn't do because he was never in the Line of Succession.

Why is this so hard to understand???
Did you feel the same about Prince Albert?

aSofaNearYou · 06/05/2023 18:33

I don't think there's really any way of justifying objecting to Camilla whilst accepting Charles.

What's good for the goose and all that...

Viviennemary · 06/05/2023 16:45

Its not only the fact she is divorced. She was Charles's mistress for many years. Never gave his marriage a chance. Lets whotewash all that.

As Charles was to her to. They were both married but yeah even in 2023 let’s blame the woman.

the whole Charles and Diana situation was messed up and there are plenty of people that were involved in that and should take the blame included the Queen Elizabeth.

Yes, Queen Consort as opposed to Princess Consort. The known as bit refers to that upgrade, not an insistence that she would always be called Queen Consort and never Queen.

Which still makes no sense anyway unless you consider Queen Consort to be a lesser title than Queen Camilla. You can still refer to her as the Queen Consort, it's accurate and appropriate. What is isn't is significantly different to Queen Camilla which some people are stubbornly insisting it is.

I wonder what would happen if Prince George ends up being gay. Would they allow him to marry a chap?

Wait until someone is, and/or marries someone who is, nonbinary. We'll need a whole new set of titles.

There's a fluff fiction/YA series (Royal Blood, by Aimée Carter) set in an alternate timeline where Edward VIII marries before ascending the throne and never meets Wallis Simpson, and in the present day his great-grandson is king. The heir to the throne, Princess Mary, is a lesbian but it hasn't become a legal question yet as so far she's 18 and "in the closet".

She is the Queen Consort. Just as QEII's mother was also Queen Consort, and also crowned as Queen (Consort, rather than Regnant), and known as Queen Elizabeth.

Prince Philip couldnt be titled King as that title outranks that of Queen.

Milkand2sugarsplease · 06/05/2023 18:39

I couldn't give a monkeys really but it was announced before Elizabeth died that Camilla would be Queen Consort so it's hardly a surprise today. Makes no odds to any of us what she is to be fair, they'll go about their lives as is and we'll go about ours. Nothing has changed just because they've had a crown placed on their heads.

DarrellRiversCriminalBehaviourOrder · 06/05/2023 18:39

Unless the rules change, the Crown passes through direct, "legitimate" (ie, married) bloodlines. So while a gay royal married to someone of the same sex could conceivably (ha ha) use donor sperm or a surrogate, the line would not be "legitimate" because the child's two biological parents would not be married.

So no...as it stands now, no way for a same sex couple to pass on the claim to the throne.

SammyScrounge · 06/05/2023 18:40

Stickmansmum · 06/05/2023 16:40

So you think what they did to Edward VIII was right? Because that’s what you’re saying…..

Times have changed. Royals did.not marry divorced people. And.besides, Edward never wanted to be King. He was a lot like Harry - wanted the perks of royalty but not the responsibilities.

Prince Phillip didn’t become King because he wasn’t in line to the throne. Elizabeth was. If Phillip had become King - because he was married to the Queen - that would have made him above her! What part of that don’t you understand?

I’m shocked by the opinions of those who don’t have a clue but fill up a thread with vitriolic nonsense anyway.
