I can and have already done so today. Maybe not on this thread but on another one.

You need to read the whole article to get the full understanding
https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2021/feb/08/royals-vetted-more-than-1000-laws-via-queens-consent

You read that, you have to be thinking how scummy are the royal family.

They don't like animal welfare paying their way or pretty much anything. What actually do they put in.

Crown estates annoy me as they are all lands that have been stolen from people over various century's.

@Novella4
I always like actual data / proof because if I was being accused publicly of something, I'd want all the facts to be put out there.
Please can you back up this statement?

Inheritance tax
The Queen / King are excluded

All lands are stolen from people over various centuries.
That’s how we get gardens

Thank you @Novella4 . That's my homework for tonight..

@Snippysocks People aren't allowed to stand quietly outside abortion centres, either, but I don't remember anyone on Mumsnet shouting about loss of liberty when that was brought in!

I do. They still do it whenever one of them is 'moved on' (rarely arrested). They cause actual harm.

StraightOuttaContext · 07/05/2023 15:37

The anti-abortion protesters cause harm, I mean.

cakeorwine · 07/05/2023 15:39

I think I understand it:

The Metropolitan Police did not want the world to see that not everyone approves of the Monarchy so they made attempts to disrupt the protests.

This meant that the world then became aware that not everyone approves of the Monarchy because the arrests of people before the event started has generated a lot of publicity.

The Streisand effect?

Oh - and I suspect it's probably also increased donations, membership and awareness for Republic. As well as highlighting the new laws about protests.

I'm confident that the rest of the world are intelligent enough to work out that not everyone in the UK approves of the Royal Family.

That's a good video from Times Radio. They should have had a clear zone / buffer zone separating the Republicans from the Monarchists.

Just received this from Republic

As you will have heard, the police arrested me along with five of our team at around 7am yesterday morning. They did this without good cause or evidence of wrong doing. You can see Republic's response on the website at www.republic.org.uk

We have had a huge amount of support and I can tell you that we're all ok, if a bit tired. I can also tell you that we will not be deterred and more protests will be planned for later in the year.

This has backfired

It certainly looks like the arrests were a pre-planned attempt to protect Charles from the embarrassment of facing dissent at the coronation. In that, they failed and failed badly.

Our arrests have been covered around the world and by all UK media outlets. It has been noted by a lot of observers that Charles has remained silent and has not made any effort to defend our values and liberties.

Republic has also seen a huge influx of members, supporters and donations.

I just wanted to let you know that we're still here and carrying on the campaign. Thank you for all messages of support.

As always - and with additional costs to deal with - all donations and new members are welcome and appreciated!

Please do forward this on to family and friends!

Bye for now!

Graham

I would be interested to see the level of donations and new supporters it has.

I know I joined up yesterday

Journalist arrested

https://twitter.com/richfelgate/status/1655199737471959041?s=20
Yesterday I got arrested whilst filming a @JustStop_Oil supporter holding a banner on the pavement near the coronation route. I'm a filmmaker and had my @BECTU press accreditation visible around my neck.

Police deemed this to be "conspiracy to commit a public nuisance".

Iwasafool · 07/05/2023 18:21

Well that should make the weekend worth it for Harry. Journalists being arrested sounds just what he'd like.

If the Republicans were making a statement I'd think they'd pretend to be Monarchists. They wouldn't want to be sectioned off and not upsetting people would they.

DuncinToffee · 07/05/2023 18:23

Sorry, Filmmaker rather than journalist but with accredited press pass

Iwasafool · 07/05/2023 18:25

Roussette · 07/05/2023 13:36

Well done Republic. Their right to protest was taken away from them yesterday.

Graham Smith CEO of Republic was released after 16 hours in custody. A couple of the others have not been released yet.

He is a reasonable man who knows what he can do, and what he can't.

From one of Republic.... ('They' is the Met)
“They said ‘slogans. chanting - go for it - but if you start saying Andrew and the sex stuff we will start arresting,” he told The Independent.

There were plenty protesting.

DuncinToffee · 07/05/2023 18:23

Maybe Harry won't be so happy then, it's journalists he has an issue with, seems fine with filmmakers.

GoldenRetriever4 · 07/05/2023 18:29

I am a republican and totally agree yesterday’s arrests were unacceptable. However, I do think extinction rebellion and other extremist groups need to take some of the blame for causing this crackdown.

Their tactics have caused enormous disruption to members of the public, which has led to the media and politicians demanding restrictions.

DuncinToffee · 07/05/2023 18:31

So protest is fine as long as it doesn't cause any disruptions?

3dogsandarabbit · 07/05/2023 18:52

Againstmachine - You could become a lifelong member, it will only cost you a minimum of £700. Wonder what that entitles you to.

That's a bit sins of the fathers, isn't it?

The law doesn't work that way. You do not arrest a group of protesters because at some point another point of completely unrelated protesters have done unacceptable stuff. Not in a democracy. The blame for this lies solely with the Met and with our government.
