Going to a gig by myself?

Leapintothelightning · 05/05/2023 19:50

My absolute favourite band have announced a tour for next year. Since 2007 I think I have only missed one of their UK tours. None of my friends want to go... would I be mental to go by myself??

I've done loads of gigs on my own. First one was whitesnake at Manchester apollo in 1981. I was 13,it was new years eve, and I had told my parents I was at a friends, they were next door at the neighbours nye party and didn't have a clue. It was only a 25 minute train ride away and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
More recently I've been to Alice Cooper, motley crue, kid rock, Brad paisley and mamy others on my own. You always get chatting to people and once the band are on you are only interested in them anyway.

If there are any fans groups on FB you might find some others in the same position

Tarkan · 09/05/2023 00:41

I've done a few gigs on my own and love it. If you're standing then it's so much easier to squeeze into a better position and I've often found myself right up at the front. Grin

I'm actually going to Radio 1's Big Weekend on my own at the end of this month. One of the acts is 30 Seconds to Mars, I've loved them for 18 years now and I knew I had to go see them even if it means going alone because DH is working. I'll hopefully enjoy the other acts too of course.

Hope you enjoy your gig! Grin

In Dundee?
I'm at Harry Styles that weekend, then straight down to London for Let Women Speak.
I'm seeing Bastille there later this summer though, v much looking forward to them.

Yep, I don't live too far away so anything in Dundee is brilliant (especially since I don't drive so any other cities require an overnight stay for me usually). I had a ticket in my basket for the Lewis Capaldi show at Fat Sam's too but we couldn't really afford for me to go there then to the Big Weekend the week after, gutted that I had to leave it though. DH and I went to the Biffy Clyro gig at Fat Sam's last year and it was brilliant.

Two of my solo gigs have been at the Caird Hall as well. Mumford and Sons and The View. I love a Dundee gig. Grin

@TastesLikeStrawberriesOnASummerEvening . I guess you are referring to the wooden roller coasters? I live near BPB and coaster enthusiasts come from all over the world for the “real” experience 😂. And back to OP’s question. I have been to plays etc on my own and live streams in the cinema. It’s nice not having to please anyone else . Go for it !

All of them were fucking painful except for Icon, the newest one, I went on that 13 times.
The others bashed my bones and/or my skull!
Absolutely brilliant fun, but never, ever again!
Highly recommended for any theme park/coaster fans, this was the end of June and the longest I queued was 10 minutes.

Anyway, back to solo gigs, I'm in touch with a few people to queue with for Harry Styles, and then 5SOS later in the year.
Hoping to connect with people for Mika in Bristol now, and Billy Joel at Hyde Park.

Enter Shikari ❤️ Saw them at Download. Bloody marvellous band. Definitely go alone. I do it all the time

I tried for Lewis Capaldi in both Glasgow and Dundee but they sold so quickly.
I did see him at Lytham last year though and then Leeds in January, he's brilliant live.
I had a Belfast ticket but I've sold it, too many others to see, I'm actually at the same Edinburgh venue as him for The Killers a couple of nights earlier.
I've just sold my Aberdeen Pet Shop Boys ticket too.
I made other plans and I saw them last year.

I love how my wee thread has brought people together ❤️

Side note I also live close to Dundee and am always buzzing when I see it mentioned!

One of my weird skills seems to be the ability to get tickets for things that sell out in minutes. Biffy ones went quickly too as did Mumford (a good few years ago now). I've never bought any via resales, always on first release.

The Mumford tour was my best ever ticket buying day though. I wanted a ticket to the Dundee show, a friend wanted tickets to the London one but she was working and couldn't get online to buy them. So I had two pages open at the same time and managed to bag tickets for both venues at the same time that morning. Grin I think the Dundee one sold out in something like 7 minutes because it was a much smaller venue.

I love spotting folk from around here too. I wonder if we're in the same area or if you're in a different direction. Smile Definitely not the easiest area to live to easily get to gigs but I've done ok over the years too. Grin

Go! I’ve gone to gigs alone, sometimes you make friends there and other times you feel a bit silly but it’s always worth it

My eldest is Lewis mad, and I did get tickets for the Sunday for the big weekend but he's away for football for the gig at far Sam's so didn't even try

SequinDiscoBiscuits · 09/05/2023 08:32

I regularly go to gigs on my own. There's various Facebook groups if you ever want to buddy uo though- Solo Armada and Girls What Gig are two larger ones. There's a Manchester group for females too, no doubt there's others for different cities. Have a great time!

BodyKeepingScore · 09/05/2023 08:33

Do it! I've met some wonderful people and had some brilliant nights going to gigs alone :)

JustDanceAddict · 09/05/2023 08:33

Not at all. My young adult DS often does as he has quite niche music tastes!!

Straightomyhead · 09/05/2023 08:37

I know I'm late to the party here but as a long time Shikari fan can I just add you won't be on your own for long.

Plus they still put on a hell of a show. I was at the Download Pilot where they headlined and couldn't believe the level to which they still had it.

Kolakalia · 09/05/2023 08:43

Do it! I do it all the time as most of my local friends aren't into the music I'm into. I've also made a great group of gig friends that I often go with too, but these days if I see a gig I want to attend I just book it then go and if other people come too that's great, if not no worries. You'll be focused on the music and loaaaaads of people go alone.

SallyWD · 09/05/2023 08:52

I do this several times a year. In fact I much prefer to go alone. There's a band I like that tours every year. I know my friend likes them too but I never tell her when they're touring simply because I prefer to go alone.
For me gigs aren't about socialising, they're about getting lost in the music. I find it easier to focus on the music of I don't have a fruebd standing next to me!

I went to their album launch show in Glasgow last month and it was amazing! Think they just get better and better, so excited for February already ☺️

rookiemere · 10/05/2023 07:54

Well I can directly compare with and without for the same concert, as saw Duran Duran solo in London and last night in Glasgow with friends ( hence why I've not got back to you yet fellow Lytham lady !) .

Definitely more fun being with pals beforehand to get in the mood, but ambivalent on the actual concert. I was hoping they were having a good time, and also hoping they would be ok to nip out as soon as music over so we didn't get stuck in the post concert traffic jam. As it is both things worked out fine, but my enjoyment level of the concert was exactly the same. Having said that neither were huge fans.

Over the years I made a lot of friends going on my own - often through fan websites.

I don't do it so much now as I feel like I've done it to death a bit.

There was a feature of XS Manchester last week when they had a woman message and say she'd seen X 50 times and they were going she was one of the biggest fans ever of anyone and no one will have seen a band more.

I have about 3 bands I've done that many for and about half a dozen or so who clock in over 20. And many of my friends over the years were well over the 50 gig mark for someone.

We all found it liberating to go on own at some level - to get lost in the music - but we also met like minded people along the way who were much better to enjoy a gig with rather than someone you'd just dragged along with you because you didn't want to go alone.

It's a whole different world...

InFlagrante · 10/05/2023 08:14

The notion that ‘it’s a bit sad’ to do things solo is honestly one of the most damaging ideas out there in terms of people not feeling enabled to act to do enjoyable things without the ‘alibi’ of company, and to feel that they are not ‘enough’ in themselves. I see so many posters on here who have never gone to the cinema alone, far less on holiday, and it’s clearly very restricting.
