Going to a gig by myself?

Leapintothelightning · 05/05/2023 19:50

My absolute favourite band have announced a tour for next year. Since 2007 I think I have only missed one of their UK tours. None of my friends want to go... would I be mental to go by myself??

I would not think twice about it, definitely, definitely go.

89redballoons · 08/05/2023 08:33

Yay, enjoy OP! One of the best nights of my life was when I went to a gig by myself. I really focused on the music and the band, and it inspired me to join a band myself Smile

Luredbyapomegranate · 08/05/2023 09:36

No at all. I have often and it’s grand

tigger1001 · 08/05/2023 13:17

I'm also socially awkward and a people pleaser but love going to gigs by myself. I think it takes the pressure off both of these as you don't need to make conversation with people you don't know and you don't need to worry if the person who came with you is having a good time.

And also, you can behave exactly how you feel like - whether that's standing still at the back taking it all in, or jumping about like a loon in the mosh pit, or anything in between - without having to think about a) if the other person/people are into that and b) if they are likely to be a bit mortified if they aren't.

(Caveat: it's possible I overthink this stuff for reasons that aren't important here)

I do this loads all over the Country, I'm seeing Duran Duran on my own tomorrow night and can't wait.

Oooh, I was so tempted to go to that, but I'm working very early on Wednesday, and getting home afterwards would be a pain.

Enjoy it for me too!

TastesLikeStrawberriesOnASummerEvening · 08/05/2023 13:41

I absolutely will thank you!
Second alone this year, loads more booked plus been to London solo for a play and musical, going again twice, also Leeds, Lytham, Edinburgh,Dundee, Bristol, who knows where else?

It's so much fun.

Absolutely!!! I'm much more carefree about how I act /sing/dance at a gig when I'm on my own than when with a friend etc. it's liberating.

I ended up on a random guy's shoulders in the crowd at Lytham festival for Lewsi Capaldi last year, I often get adopted because I'm on my own, I also find I get told to go in front a lot because I'm short.
People at gigs are so friendly, even the naf ones I go to, but then I make friends with the Mums because they assume I'm with my daughter, when it's me who is the fan and Dd wouldn't be seen dead there!
(I love boybands, have seen most of them)

There's an FB group called Solo Armada for solo gig goers, they're a friendly bunch and go to way cooler things than me.

AwaaFaeHom · 08/05/2023 14:02

Ooh l will check that FB group out.

I'm also short and have people asking if I wasn't too go in front of them when I'm at the front. It's really lovely!

My kids are of the age that they don't need me to take them to gigs any more 😁

movinginaminute · 08/05/2023 14:06

Go for it! I sat next to someone who was on their own at a 'Queen with Adam Lambert' concert. She said she enjoyed it more than having someone come with her who was coming for her rather than wanting to see the band. She said she had been to loads of concerts on her own over many years as she loved live music, she definitely had a fab time!

Mine's 21 and has much cooler taste than me, she'd possibly come if I paid for her ticket but nah, I'm fine on my own ta!

Will definitely check the Facebook group out! I’m also short so hopefully will get a few nice people letting me in front too, we can hope!

@Leapintothelightning My kids come with ME as they worry! ;-)
I'm 67 & was more than happy to go see Richard Ashcroft on my own this summer, but my girls (they're not keen) have decided to come.. ;-)

I met a 70yr old at a George Ezra show in Manchester last year, I saw him 5 times, I think she went 8 times, either with me as we met up again or on her own!
She's going again loads this year.
I'm seeing him at Lytham festival, doing two nights there as I loved it last year and Jamiroquai is playing the night before George.
Last year I also spent the day at Blackpool Pleasure Beach on my own and went on every single ride.
Doing stuff alone is so freeing.

Mimilamore · 08/05/2023 17:59

Most definitely do it. I am embracing doing things I want to do alone. Far better than having somebody along who doesn't really want to be there or having to make compromises. I.E waiting for ever for them to go to the loo when you don't need to go, having to find food that matches their dietary needs etc, etc!!

rookiemere · 08/05/2023 18:11

@TastesLikeStrawberriesOnASummerEvening this probably defeats the whole ethos of the thread, but I'm likely to be solo at Jamiroquai at Lytham as well if you wouldn't mind some company ?

mamabear715 · 08/05/2023 18:48

That's brilliant, @TastesLikeStrawberriesOnASummerEvening !

Yes please.
I'm obviously fine on my own but always happy to meet up with new people too.
I'm driving, but will be arriving around 4 and parking my car in the disabled car park (bit of grass they charge £22 for).

TastesLikeStrawberriesOnASummerEvening · 09/05/2023 00:01

Was it you I spoke to about it last year?
There's definitely a MNer who goes most years anyway.
Last year was my first year and I loved it so much I'm obviously going again.
Two nights this time.
No Blackpool Pleasure Beach though, I had a great time, but fuck me those rides are painful, never again!

YeahOkWhatever · 09/05/2023 00:05

Yep done for the first time in March this year and again in April. Really enjoyed the gig, total focus and didnt think twice about being on my tod. Do it, you'll be grand!

OnTheBoardwalk · 09/05/2023 00:14

Do it. 10 years ago I met some random gig buddies and have travelled to many countries with them

agree join the Facebook page, there’s always usually a meet up pub for everyone. You can meet up with them when you want to at the gig and go solo when you don’t

sandgrown · 09/05/2023 00:20

@TastesLikeStrawberriesOnASummerEvening . I guess you are referring to the wooden roller coasters? I live near BPB and coaster enthusiasts come from all over the world for the “real” experience 😂. And back to OP’s question. I have been to plays etc on my own and live streams in the cinema. It’s nice not having to please anyone else . Go for it !

Sugarfree23 · 09/05/2023 00:29

Go for it.
Its liberating, I'd much rather go alone, get in early soak up the atmosphere, enjoy the support act, than to go with people who think they are doing you a favour and who would rather turn up just in time to see the main act.
