To be annoyed that modern clothes cater almost entirely for larger people?

Needed some new jeans over the weekend - I am about a 27"-28" waist. Most shops (in the big city shopping mall I visited) had only jeans in the 30s" and up- i.e. too big. I eventually managed to find some 20s in TX Maxx - about 10 jeans in that range, squeezed on the end of a rack catering entirely for 30-35s.

Then later I had to take a couple of pairs back as I didn't realise they made were of that horrible stretchy denim which ends up falling down my arse after walking for 5 minutes.

Same with tshirts - I used to be a Medium, now modern Mediums are far too large and baggy, so I've had to shift to Small. As usual, the vast majority of clothes racks are taken up by Mediums and Larges.

Only thing I can think is that as people have gotten fatter the clothes industry has shifted to cater for that. As for online shopping - had far too many problems to buy clthes onlines, esp if they're made for the US market... think I'd be a XX Small there. 😂

Have you tried the ranges that cater to teenagers?
I’m a small person, not exactly short (I’m 5’4”) but have no boobs, no bum and narrow hips, and find the New Look 915 range and H&M teen range fit me better than smaller sizes from adult ranges. They also tend to have very similar styles to the adult range that are just cut differently. Might be worth a look 🤷🏻‍♀️ (and you don’t pay VAT on kids clothes so helps look after the pennies too 😂👍🏻)

IglesiasPiggl · 04/05/2023 08:27

You're right that some shops have vanity sizing so their smallest size might be too big for some. So don't shop there. Loads of shops do have small sizes, and they're the shops for you.

Iwantmyoldnameback · 04/05/2023 08:33

I'm confused, before I had children I had a 28 inch waist, I wasn't slim then and I'm not slim now.
I thought this thread was going to be about a lot of tops being short and wide not another fat bashing thread.

MollyRover · 04/05/2023 08:35

Since when is a size 8 teeny tiny? If she said she was a size 18 everyone would be rushing to her aid with suggestions. I've seen no fatphobia here, lots of accusing the OP of lying about being a perfectly normal size. The post that said supermodels were a size 10 - 12 at some point, totally ridiculous!

OP it's a bad season for clothes at the moment, I was chatting to someone about it just the other day. My limited experience of UK stores is that Topshop is quite good for jeans. Do you have ONLY there? Good selection and quality for a not bad price.

northbacchus · 04/05/2023 08:36

Why is the solution for finding clothes for a thinner person to dress as a teenager? H&M, River Island, Hollister and Brandy Melville hardly have appropriate clothes in for a professional adult.

LudicrouslyCapaciousBag · 04/05/2023 08:36

I'd be really interested to know what shops you tried. I think you would do well in Zara and Mango.

Mammalamma · 04/05/2023 08:37

I often find find the sizing in the shops are slightly different. I used to be a size 8-10 and some shops an 10 would be a little snug at times - you work out the sizing for the shop.

Im now fatter and a 12-14 - but again some shops a size 14 can be snug or larger on me.

Im tall as well and even when I was an 8-10 shops like Superdry even am XL was to tight for me! I doubt anything would fit me in there now!

It’s annoying especially as I hate shopping so use online - I find I end up only buying from a couple of retailers as I know it will fit.

Super dry have bizarre sizing!

LadyLump · 04/05/2023 08:38

27-28" is about a UK 10 which is quite large.

On what planet is a 10 quite large!?Confused

Topshop's gone from the UK high street. The brand has been picked up and is available at ASOS but OP says she doesn't want to shop online.

Also Uniqlo. They go down to a 22 inch in their jeans.

Bollocks.

Catspyjamas17 · 04/05/2023 08:46

I can just about remember at my slimmest size 8 being too big for me and that was the smallest the shop had.

Understandable most shops are catering for the majority but there are a number of shops who sell more petite clothing and larger clothing.

I did find recently that I had to buy 30/30 in Boden jeans as the 32/32 were more like 36/34 and would have fitted DH (my waist is about 29/30" but 32 usually fit best, 34 in men's, and I usually need 31/32" inside leg) It did annoy me slightly that shops can't even get it right when trousers are sold by measurements not random size numbering. I've always found that dresses tend to be a bit pear-shaped/not generously cut around the boob in shape but that's probably because I have recently been according to shop measurements a 16 on the top (though weirdly usually find a 12 or 14 at the most fits well in tops/shirts), 12 waist and 14 hips.

SVRT19674 · 04/05/2023 08:55

Hmmm interesting, I find the opposite. Lots of small and medium, the sales are chock a block with xs and s, which size I was when i was 12. I am a 14 now, although really tall. I find much more choice on the online versions of high street shops. I need 33 inch trouse rinside leg and were I am jeans for women are 30 or 32 inch maximum. Went online, the physical shops are useless.

AlwaysWantingMoreClothes · 04/05/2023 08:56

Putyourdamnshoeson · 03/05/2023 22:39

This is undoubtedly a man. In women's sizing these measurements are standard and easy to get hold of.

My DH has a 28/30 waist and a 35 leg. He would never hope to get anything on our high street. He knows it's order online only and choice is often limited. Which does suck, because he is not actually unusual, I see plenty of guys our age (early 40s) older and younger who look similar.

Am late to this but my 20y son is a 28 waist and finds jeans in uniqlo, Arket and Jack Wills (in Sports Direct) without having to order online.

DiscoDragon · 04/05/2023 08:58

I think for one reason or another most people struggle to find clothes that fit on the high street. I'm a short-arse and can rarely find anything I like that isn't miles too long for my little stumpy legs. There don't seem to be that many shops these days that sell petite lengths and the ones that do it all seems to be fairly formal/work attire which is useless for me!

AlwaysWantingMoreClothes · 04/05/2023 09:03

DannyZukosSmile · 03/05/2023 23:17

DEFINITELY an orchestrated campaign on here to attack overweight people. Very nasty, and yep, probably men. Very ugly, fat sweaty (single) men posting from their bedroom in the house they lodge in. Men who have not a hope in HELL of dating any of the gorgeous women who adorn the pages of mumsnet chat forums. Men who think they deserve J-Lo, or Taylor Swift, or Beyonce, when they look like Jabba the Hutt.

I think calling anyone ugly is unnecessarily rude. Regardless of their behaviour.

And when you look for dresses the waist is always in the wrong place because of your shirt body. I relate to this 😂. It’s all well and good people saying things can be relentless up however, my sewing skills and horrific and I would never have the money to get everything taken up by someone else!

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 03/05/2023 22:26

Is this just a stealth boast about how slim you are? My dd is tiny and never seems to have a problem finding clothes that fit.

Of course it is. And goady AF to boot. Yawn.

ThinkTheresBeenAGlitch · 04/05/2023 09:06

Sizing is inconsistent; surely most of us have clothes in our wardrobes spanning three dress sizes that all fit, even ones from the same retailer?

Jeans are especially tricky to get a perfect fit - women's bodies are individual and variable and standard sizes often don't cater for our personal shape, so unless you're handy with a needle or get everything tailored then you do come up against these frustrations.

Fashion recently has been for boxy, oversized styles so if you aren't aware of how it's intended to look, you might be startled at how voluminous a top or dress in your usual size might be.

It has never been easier to buy clothes in a wide range of sizing, from very small to very big and there has never been so much choice for everyone inclusive of different tastes and body shapes. Go online, OP, everyone is catered for there!

Teateaandmoretea · 04/05/2023 09:06

I think loads of people have problems. The clothes in shops are always too short for me, I just don't bother even trying these days it's a waste of time.

A 52y professional adult here and I just ordered four tops from H and M. They have decent basics.

All sorts of people can be nasty inside. I just hate being mean about people’s appearances so never do it. Not even about people like Trump and Johnson..
