To be annoyed that modern clothes cater almost entirely for larger people?

Needed some new jeans over the weekend - I am about a 27"-28" waist. Most shops (in the big city shopping mall I visited) had only jeans in the 30s" and up- i.e. too big. I eventually managed to find some 20s in TX Maxx - about 10 jeans in that range, squeezed on the end of a rack catering entirely for 30-35s.

Then later I had to take a couple of pairs back as I didn't realise they made were of that horrible stretchy denim which ends up falling down my arse after walking for 5 minutes.

Same with tshirts - I used to be a Medium, now modern Mediums are far too large and baggy, so I've had to shift to Small. As usual, the vast majority of clothes racks are taken up by Mediums and Larges.

Only thing I can think is that as people have gotten fatter the clothes industry has shifted to cater for that. As for online shopping - had far too many problems to buy clthes onlines, esp if they're made for the US market... think I'd be a XX Small there. 😂

I’m a size 8 and I have no problem at all getting sizes and never have.

Unless you’re a man, then I don’t see a problem. If you are a man you need to accept that you’re at the extreme end of thinness, hardly any men have a 27-28 waist.

DanceMonster · 04/05/2023 07:51

I’m an 8-10 and a small, and I don’t have any problems finding clothes.

Plenty of teenage boys of adult height are that size, and some adult men. A men's small is not tiny, my 5ft 10, 16 year old wears a small.

My brother used take a 28 and he is 6ft 3in!

GraysPapaya · 04/05/2023 07:57

I can see where the Op is coming from, I’m a size 6 petite and it’s a nightmare, stores like George Asda, even Boden, mainly start at size 8. I just have to pick my stores carefully. But I appreciate I’m an outlier! I just can’t shop there.

And he definitely plays golf and they definitely have twins!

Referred to only as 'doing his hobby' though as it might be outing.

cheekyffer · 04/05/2023 08:00

Seen similar. I have packed on more than 10kg with some medication. From some shops, buying smaller sizes than I did 5-10 years ago.

When was that? I remember plenty of 8s and a fair few 6s. Often the only sizes left in the sales.

Do you want my date of birth? Clearly I'm older than you. Fashion models were size 10 and 12 then.

AxolotlOnions · 04/05/2023 08:02

This would tell me that the more popular sizes are the smaller sizes so are selling out faster.

TheKobayashiMaru · 04/05/2023 08:02

These teeny tiny threads are getting tedious

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 04/05/2023 08:04

Have you thought that small sizes are more popular so sold out?

RedToothBrush · 04/05/2023 08:07

Bollocks.

It could mean they've sold out of the smaller sizes...

HiddenGiraffes · 04/05/2023 08:08

Sounds like you're about a size 10, one of the sizes that is sold pretty much everywhere. In shops that cut too generously you might be an 8, in Pull & Bear or somewhere you'll be a M/L. As someone who wears 8-10, it's a really easy size to get.

Skybluepinky · 04/05/2023 08:08

Go to different shops, order online.

Choconut · 04/05/2023 08:13

Primark do jeans in tiny sizes, I always get them there. I find jeans difficult though because to fit my bum they're too big for my waist and to fit my waist I can't get them over my bum. Primark I can generally find something though.

NotAnotherBathBomb · 04/05/2023 08:13

Awww, you're Teeny Tiny 🥲

Lcb123 · 04/05/2023 08:13

I wear between sizes 8-12 depending on the shop and I’ve never experienced this. I get more annoyed by size inconsistencies between stores. And everything is so long on me (I’m 5ft4)!

DeadButDelicious · 04/05/2023 08:14

I know just how you feel OP.

My diamond shoes chafe something awful! Seriously my feet are just weeping sores at this point. The world just doesn't cater for us!

🙄

YouNeverSeeTheRealMe · 04/05/2023 08:15

🙄Are you a 9 year old child?

XBealtaine · 04/05/2023 08:18

Where are you trying to shop??
I think it's the 10s 12s and 14s that are always sold out.
I'd be after one of those sizes myself. When shopping online if you're not quick all that's left is the smaller sizes.
Any shop in town is rails and rails of small sizes.

Kazzyhoward · 04/05/2023 08:19

YABU. I'm a normal size, and havn't noticed it. What I have noticed is the lack of quality control and that if I buy two identical jeans, say, size 12, from the same store the same range, just different colours, then the sizing is obviously different, i.e. lay one on top of the other and the legs are longer or waist band narrower etc. If you were saying racks full of very large sizes, that sounds more like end of range/end of season leftovers, in the same way the rack full of horrendous size 22 pyjamas always appears in Post-Christmas Sales!

My OH is overweight and has been obese at several points in his life and most High Street stores have never carried stock over XL - some have started to sell XXL in recent years, but it's still hard to find, and certainly not available in a full range. For years he was restricted to just a couple of High Street chain stores, and even then, it was a minor miracle if they had XXL (or anything over 17.5 in a shirt or over 44 in trousers) in something he actually liked. Quite ironic really that a few more High Street stores started selling larger mens's sizes around 5-10 years ago (that's when we noticed it), just as most online retailers were expanding their offerings in larger sizes! The retailers were certainly VERY slow to start catering for men's larger sizes in society generally.

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 04/05/2023 08:20

Have you thought that small sizes are more popular so sold out?

I think it's this ^ definitely in places like supermarkets. Primark however always has plenty of stuff in smaller sizes IME. TKMaxx is always completely random and I can't be arsed with it really.

GnomeDePlume · 04/05/2023 08:20

Learn to sew. This has been a life saver for me.

I am at the opposite end of the closing size spectrum from the OP. Clothes for super plus sizes are dreadful. Man made fabrics and shapeless. I don't want to look like I am wearing a nylon marquee.

Sewing has given me access to a fabulous array of fabrics and clothing styles.

I am now learning to fit clothes to the body. Practicing on DD with a 5 dress project.

Andanotherone01 · 04/05/2023 08:22

I’m shaking and crying at the audacity of shops to cater for everyone. Fatties should frankly be ashamed of themselves and only be allowed to wear burlap sacks until they’ve lost a few pounds. Lardy bastards.

Tessisme · 04/05/2023 08:23

Get yourself down to Smyths. Doll aisle. Plenty of tiny clothes there.

It could just be that all those BIG FAT clothes have nudged the wee skinny ones off the rail. Have a look on the floor.

In all seriousness, your size may just be popular and sold out. Lots and lots of people take smaller sizes.

Are you coming back?

BeverlyHa · 04/05/2023 08:23

Not true. Plenty of small sizes out there. If your body is too small, look at kids sections or go to a taylor and have a proper fit
