To be annoyed that modern clothes cater almost entirely for larger people?

Needed some new jeans over the weekend - I am about a 27"-28" waist. Most shops (in the big city shopping mall I visited) had only jeans in the 30s" and up- i.e. too big. I eventually managed to find some 20s in TX Maxx - about 10 jeans in that range, squeezed on the end of a rack catering entirely for 30-35s.

Then later I had to take a couple of pairs back as I didn't realise they made were of that horrible stretchy denim which ends up falling down my arse after walking for 5 minutes.

Same with tshirts - I used to be a Medium, now modern Mediums are far too large and baggy, so I've had to shift to Small. As usual, the vast majority of clothes racks are taken up by Mediums and Larges.

Only thing I can think is that as people have gotten fatter the clothes industry has shifted to cater for that. As for online shopping - had far too many problems to buy clthes onlines, esp if they're made for the US market... think I'd be a XX Small there. 😂

Absolute load of crap. If you want to fat-bash, which this thread is clearly about, at least try to make sense. If people are so fat/much larger these days, then lots of small sizes would be left.

Your thread/post makes no sense. Stupid thread. Hmm

MrsSkylerWhite · 03/05/2023 22:40

Interesting. I find the opposite.

Here have the extra tiny violin you ordered 🎻

MrsJBaptiste · 03/05/2023 22:41

You won't get much sympathy on here OP, slim people never do!

They do when their posts make sense.

SirenSays · 03/05/2023 22:42

I've been everything from a size 4 to a size 14. They never have my size either, funny that.

This is undoubtedly a man. In women's sizing these measurements are standard and easy to get hold of.

My DH has a 28/30 waist and a 35 leg. He would never hope to get anything on our high street. He knows it's order online only and choice is often limited. Which does suck, because he is not actually unusual, I see plenty of guys our age (early 40s) older and younger who look similar.

I was just typing something like this. Not sure if it’s true for womenswear but I do find that most places don’t stock a men’s waist 28 in store and we have to look online for my DP.

27-28 inch waist sounds like a man. It's an 8-10 in women's so not particularly small.

Nope most jeans are sizes in inches not women's sizes.

I don't know many men who have a 27 inch waist.

fitzwilliamdarcy · 03/05/2023 22:43

Can you let me know where this fat utopia is please? I need new clothes and am struggling to find them. Thanks!

They do when they’re actually seeking it rather than stealth boasting.

Bore off.

Fwiw I am a size 14. I'm wobbling as I type...

I seriously worry about the health and welfare of a MAN with a 27 inch waist. Only boys of school age should have waists that tiny.

No, the smaller sizes were just never there. Supermarkets and many clothes shops often start at a 30 or 32W. I noticed the other day that some men's clothes in Lidl were only M and up, on the shelf ticket not just what was left.

teraculum29 · 03/05/2023 22:46

Sorry OP,
but i find that shops do exact opposite what you just describe.

Crikeyalmighty · 03/05/2023 22:46

@Wispawispawispa same size here- same problems!

They are probably not even made that small, because no-one is such a tiny size. Only on mumsnet. OP is talking nonsense.

DeathBy1000PipeCleaners · 03/05/2023 22:47

Try Uniqlo for jeans! Their sizes aren't true to what they say on the labels but they do cater for smaller people. I'm the same size as you but take a 25" W at Uniqlo, which is really about a 28" W.

My own shopping gripe is that the average height of a woman in the UK is 5'3", same as me, but the nicest dresses are always made for women of model height.

Coxspurplepippin · 03/05/2023 22:48

Oh, poor you. I'm sure you'll be able to find clothes for your teeny, tiny little bod somewhere. All us heifers are well catered for - we just buy super king sized duvet covers and fashion them into fetching ensembles.

Jeans are sized in inches but a 28 is not tiny for a woman, they start at a 24.

I don't think many men in their twenties and up have a 28 waist, that's why they are usually only available in 'young' shops. Still a pain for the men who need a smaller size.

universityhelp · 03/05/2023 22:49

Go to primark - it's full of size 4 - 8 clothes that nobody wants. Or any shop targeted at the younger market. If you are smaller than a size 8, surely there are lots of shops that sell jeans for younger people/children? H&M, New Look, River Island, etc.

My DP wears a 28 with a belt, he’s just a beanpole type built for long distance running! (He’s 5’11 and struggles to put weight on but we’re not too concerned as apparently his dad was exactly the same until middle age hit - we are in our 20s)

Kanaloa · 03/05/2023 22:50

We’ve lost sight of what a healthy body looks like.

It’s to flatter fat people.

You should be able to see a person’s ribs.

I have a size 10 top from the 70s which wouldn’t even fit round the big toe of someone who wears a size 10 now.

If you look back at old documentary films of the street nobody was fat.

I think that about covers everything you were hoping for.

Fansandblankets · 03/05/2023 22:51

No I’ve found the complete opposite.
