To be annoyed that modern clothes cater almost entirely for larger people?

KookyNotOoky · 03/05/2023 22:17

Needed some new jeans over the weekend - I am about a 27"-28" waist. Most shops (in the big city shopping mall I visited) had only jeans in the 30s" and up- i.e. too big. I eventually managed to find some 20s in TX Maxx - about 10 jeans in that range, squeezed on the end of a rack catering entirely for 30-35s.

Then later I had to take a couple of pairs back as I didn't realise they made were of that horrible stretchy denim which ends up falling down my arse after walking for 5 minutes.

Same with tshirts - I used to be a Medium, now modern Mediums are far too large and baggy, so I've had to shift to Small. As usual, the vast majority of clothes racks are taken up by Mediums and Larges.

Only thing I can think is that as people have gotten fatter the clothes industry has shifted to cater for that. As for online shopping - had far too many problems to buy clthes onlines, esp if they're made for the US market... think I'd be a XX Small there. 😂

Humble brag or what? 😂

Please accept this formal apology on behalf of fat arses everywhere. 😂

Why is the solution for finding clothes for a thinner person to dress as a teenager? H&M, River Island, Hollister and Brandy Melville hardly have appropriate clothes in for a professional adult.

All those shops have normal jeans an adult can wear. OP was looking for jeans, not professional wear.

Atnilpoe · 04/05/2023 09:14

I think YABU, because I’m thin too and have literally never had a problem buying clothes. Stop being ridiculous.

AlwaysWantingMoreClothes · 04/05/2023 09:14

OP I will take your question at face value. I am a slim person, maybe a bit smaller than you. But there are plenty of clothes out there to fit you, at every budget. You are just not looking hard enough.

Shops don’t order many size 6s so they sell out quickly. But there is plenty of availability online.

You seem like a size 8-10. I am shocked that you can’t find any jeans. I bet I could find you some in an instant. If it’s true fashion advice you need, post on the style board and people can share their advice.

Try Warehouse online or Zara. I wouldn’t enter TKM if you gave me £100 to spend there.

Shops stock fewer sizes in general these days due to the bulk of their business being online. I am sure most of us here have struggled to find our size at some point or other. But don’t bother posting about it.

‘Only thing I can think is that as people have gotten fatter the clothes industry has shifted to cater for that.’

OP you say this like you have had a unique epiphany. Of course the clothes industry is catering for larger sizes now. These threads boil down to the exciting headline: ‘Shops make clothes so more people can wear them’.

Seaweed42 · 04/05/2023 09:18

Nope don't agree. Plenty of shops I visited recently have very small sizes as well as bigger ones. Mango, H&M, Zara etc.
Small branches of shops will have fewer sizes on offer so you might just have been unlucky that day.
If you want jeans then go to a shop that specialises in jeans like River Island.

TK Maxx is an exception because that's an outlet centre so other stores have sold TK Maxx their UNSOLD products. So there won't be the full range of sizes available, that's a given when shopping there.

HamptonCaught · 04/05/2023 09:18

YANBU.

Can you try professional sellers on eBay or Depop who sell preloved clothes? There’s a lot of small sizes on there.

Glittertwins · 04/05/2023 09:20

Plenty of shops have that size 8-10 UK, DD found more than enough last weekend

Jessbow · 04/05/2023 09:25

Maybe its a bloke
My husband is small, 28waist.

It is absolutely the case that mens trousers are not easily availible in 28'' and smaller waist, especialy in catalogues etc .
Primark does 28'' but difficult to find in store- hey dont have many

And no, boys triusers are not the answer- the rise is too short- unless you want to speak and octave higher

dottiedodah · 04/05/2023 09:26

Most shops seem to cater well for the slim Jims! I think .Whatever size you are you can never seem to find it though.Just Sods Law!

User839516 · 04/05/2023 09:30

Has to be a man - 27/28” waist is not particularly small (about a size 10) but also would have no bearing on your jeans size? Womens’ jeans would be sized according to your hip measurement but labelled as size 10, size 12 etc.
I can see that a 28” waist for a man would be particularly small and you would struggle to find jeans. But why come and moan about it on mumsnet..? Bizarre.

SalviaDivinorum · 04/05/2023 09:39

I think it’s more very poor stock control. I complained in GAP years ago that they never had jeans in my size.

The assistant told me they sold out that size very fast. No answer as to my next question which was why didn’t they increase the stock order in that size then!

I’ve always found M&S very poor in that regard too. Lots of small and large sizes but nothing in the middle

StrawberryWater · 04/05/2023 09:44

I find that the only shops that even bother to stock larger sizes are Tesco and Asda.

Proper clothes shops only tend to stock smaller sizes. Larger sizes for those over about an 16 are online because they like to pretend we don’t exist (and even if highstreet stores do claim to stock above a 16 it’s not a real 16 it’s an invented 16 which is actually either a 14 or a 12 as I found in one store).

MarkWithaC · 04/05/2023 09:56

YABU and YANBU. Small-size clothes certainly do exist, but IME clothes makers think people all get bigger as they get taller. I’m tall and lanky (5’ 10”, 26” waist, 34” inside leg, long gangling arms, not much nork) and usually have to make a choice between something fitting me well in the body but being halfway up to my elbows/knees, or being long enough in the sleeves/legs but two or three sizes too big in the torso and waist.

I’m sometimes surprised at how big kids’ clothes are; I can usually wear the biggest size at GapKids in something like leggings, although they will be very short in the leg. And GapKids’ boys’ jumpers in the biggest size tend to fit me well as they make the sleeves longer than for girls and women.

How dreadful for you

JusthereforXmas · 04/05/2023 10:25

I use to be fairly skinny (size 6-8 dress/top & 10-12 jeans & 7 shoe)

I'm now bigger (size 10-12 dress/top or 12-14 jeans & 7 shoe)

There is definitely far more size 8 stuff for sale... I use to be able to buy virtually any dress/top I liked (and often cheap too) in my size, shoes where a lot harder everything always seems size 4/5/6.

Now I struggle loads with dresses/tops as well because I must fall in the 'common' sizing so my size is now always either sold out or still expensive (only the less common sizes that aren't selling well are whacked down in the sale usually).

Every time I pick something up I like its a size 6 or 8 then theres non left in the mid range sizes through to like size 16+.

Also, many of the more expensive brands seem to be smaller, but it's hard if you are poor and the supermarket doesn't have the smaller sizes.

whynotwhatknot · 04/05/2023 11:36

Jamelia is that you?

no there isnt alot of larger clothing i can only find my sze in two shops and i cant see them lasting much longer

dont know if this is some sort of boast

I think calling anyone ugly is unnecessarily rude. Regardless of their behaviour.

Yep.

Some really vile posts from @DannyZukosSmile in this thread.

I'm not sure how posting stuff like that and sniggering about it is in any way helping women, but here we are...

MollyRover · 04/05/2023 12:03

Agree @SofiaSoFar . I'm struggling to see how asking for advice on where to find good size 8 - 10 jeans, a completely normal size, is somehow a stealth boast or fattist. If people are unhappy about their own size we mostly have the ability to do something about it. Don't see any of this nastiness on threads where someone is looking for clothes for a larger frame.

Yes. It’s not nice to see. I know society is fatphobic and it is much easier to be slim and accepted. (Whether the cause is natural shape, diet, eating disorder or illness). But the sheer scale of the nasty and sarcastic comments towards slim people looking for clothes that fit them, makes for uncomfortable reading.

It seems that some overweight people think slim folk are made of Teflon and any complaints they make are seen as boasting or smuggery. It’s like they are primed to pounce on anyone slim making posts like this. Whilst it’s obvious what place the bile comes from, it can’t be nice for the recipient.

Dangeliss · 04/05/2023 12:27

I agree OP. I worked in department stores for years and saw it happening in front of my eyes during the mid 2010s.

Bizarre that some people are asking if the OP is "on crack". This is real. And easy to prove too if, like me, you have a lot of vintage clothing from popular brands to compare with. Sizes used to be consistently smaller than they are today.

Now when I shop at Primark (or H&M which have done the same), I have to buy an Extra Small, and even those are sometimes too large for me (I'm 5'10" and 10st so not exactly petite).

I think it's great to offer more choices for larger sizes, but for the love of god call them what they are.
