To be annoyed that modern clothes cater almost entirely for larger people?

Needed some new jeans over the weekend - I am about a 27"-28" waist. Most shops (in the big city shopping mall I visited) had only jeans in the 30s" and up- i.e. too big. I eventually managed to find some 20s in TX Maxx - about 10 jeans in that range, squeezed on the end of a rack catering entirely for 30-35s.

Then later I had to take a couple of pairs back as I didn't realise they made were of that horrible stretchy denim which ends up falling down my arse after walking for 5 minutes.

Same with tshirts - I used to be a Medium, now modern Mediums are far too large and baggy, so I've had to shift to Small. As usual, the vast majority of clothes racks are taken up by Mediums and Larges.

Only thing I can think is that as people have gotten fatter the clothes industry has shifted to cater for that. As for online shopping - had far too many problems to buy clthes onlines, esp if they're made for the US market... think I'd be a XX Small there. 😂

Proper jeans brands often have inches, 24 and 25 are a small and big 6, 26 and 27 a small and big 8, and so on. It's much easier to find the right fit in smaller sizes.

Maybe that's why I've never seen them, I don't buy 'proper' jeans brands. I also don't particularly want to buy jeans by actual inches, it would remind me how fat I am not that I forget Grin

TeenLifeMum · 03/05/2023 23:16

My Dd is size 4-6 and since being adult sizes the world of fashion has opened up for her. She couldn’t wear trousers before because the age didn’t match her width so to get the length they’d be too wide. She’s a 5 foot 7 1/2 inch beanpole. Urban outfitters had lots in her size and usual H&M and new look do too. Tkmaxx is all unsold stuff so weird sizes. I never find anything in there but my friend finds amazing buys. She’s probably better at rummaging than me.

There does seem to be an orchestrated campaign going on at the moment. Where are they coming from? Did we make fun of another MRA website?

DEFINITELY an orchestrated campaign on here to attack overweight people. Very nasty, and yep, probably men. Very ugly, fat sweaty (single) men posting from their bedroom in the house they lodge in. Men who have not a hope in HELL of dating any of the gorgeous women who adorn the pages of mumsnet chat forums. Men who think they deserve J-Lo, or Taylor Swift, or Beyonce, when they look like Jabba the Hutt.

AnotherRoadsideAttraction · 03/05/2023 23:17

I’m a 24-25inch waist and find plenty of lovely clothes that fit. So do my gorgeous friends who wear size 30 and up. Try shopping at different stores? John Lewis has a lot of options, plenty of tiny sizes. 🙄

Mumsnetters don't like slim people 😂 you'll get flamed for this but I hear you.

@IWasFunBeforeMum

Are you taking the piss? It's overweight people mumsnet loathe. The teeny tinies just LOVE to bash anyone over a size 6, and say 'we've lost sight of what a healthy weight is!' 🙄 As they munch their massive salad next to their 6 ft 6 DH who has just got home from his £177K a year job with a long commute. Then they start sobbing and shaking, at how much they love their tall, sporty 6 ft 4 sons who make them feel so safe.....

That’s how bad it is on mumsnet 😂 if I hadn’t said it I swear somebody would have come along to tell us all how they had to give all their size 8 clothes from the 90s to their child to use as Barbie outfits because they simply would not fit in a human being nowadays since we’re all so fat now.

And that’s what op wants too - everyone to come along and wail about how the world’s full of fat people and they’re cluttering up all the clothes shops with their fat clothing.

TRUE. And hasn't the OP gone terribly QUIET? Enjoying your work @KookyNotOoky Wink ???

Rugby playing. They aren’t just ‘sporty,’ they play rugby. And then they devour a few loaves and a couple of roast chickens as a pre-dinner snack, since their ‘petite’ sisters (who love to borrow mum’s ‘cool’ clothes) already munched a huge salad earlier so won’t need anything else.

I think it actually makes the upper end of sizes sound smaller. As 18 is triple 6 if you use sizes, but a 36w compared with a 24w is only 50% bigger.

No he doesn’t have a long commute, he works away!

UneFoisAuChalet · 03/05/2023 23:22

It’s TK Max FFS. I’ve bought clothes in many different sizes there. I have a size 16 dress that is skintight, but also have a size ten dress that’s roomy. It’s where all the ‘mistakes’ end up hence buying a Stella McCartney dress for £60 and Michael Kors bag for £45.

TK Maxx is all about looking for a good bargain. I ignore the sizes, hold them up against me, hum and haw and then decide if it’s worth heading to the dressing room. The size 16 dress is one of those bargains. I’m not a 16, never have been, always 10-12 depending on the shop and this dress was sooo not a ‘size 16’ from what the label said, and I was right!

I’m a firm believer that you can tell what clothes will look like on you with a good eye. Sizes vary so much these days that assuming it will fit is stupid and at best naive.

Kanaloa · 03/05/2023 23:23

But anyway, back to op’s awful problem. Have you considered holding up the fatty jeans and loudly saying ‘I need a shop assistant! Somebody help me! Are there any size 8 clothes in this shop please? These size 10 trousers will slip off me!’

Or possibly just going into any other shop on the high street. I’d be surprised if the majority don’t stock a variety of sizes.

I’m a 28 waist and never have a problem buying from Asos, next, primark… it’s one of the most common sizes

Actually, no, they really really don't. They get told they're miserable, salad-munching bitches with superiority complexes and eating disorders. See your comments above.

This is why I think the OP must be a man, an 8-10 is a widely available women's size

Why? A 28 in men's is not widely available. You have to shop at places aimed at teens. Many teens and some men do need smaller than a 30. It is a legitimate thing to be annoyed at.

EarlofShrewsbury · 03/05/2023 23:37

It's the fashion right now, everything oversized.

I'm a size 12 but had to get a few tops in 6/8 because I wanted a normal fit, not an oversized fit.

It's annoying but it's nothing to do with psychological mind games regarding size, it's just fashion.

If that IS the case, maybe it's because they're smug, snidey, sarcastic, goady fat-bashing individuals who love to post banal threads bashing anyone over a size 8, and label them as greedy, slow, stupid, and a bit common. Plenty of threads being started with this theme this week. Don't even TRY to pretend it's not true coz it is. WAY more fat bashing than thin bashing on this site. THIN bashing only pops up when someone has fat bashed first.

It's a man because it's clearly a lazy weight-based wind-up of the kind we're currently getting every two minutes. Nothing to do with size-based sleuthing.

hopsalong · 03/05/2023 23:46

FWIW jeans labelled 27/28 are not actually that size when measured. My waist is about 26, but my hips are 38, and because I have a long body every single pair of jeans I have ever owned, no matter how high-waisted, has fitted several inches below my waist. I normally buy a 28, but this waistband is stretching around 32+ inches of me. If I bought my actual waist size I couldn't get them on. If I bought the measurement of the mid-hip area where they sit they wouldn't stay on.

As far as sizes go, it depends where you shop. Most clothes at a shop like Sandro either fit me or are too small or way too small. At M&S there is no size or top/dress/ jacket/ probably bra that is too small, and many sizes that are too large. H&M and Zara both seem fairly realistic to me, in that I am on the smaller end of middle, which is how I appear in reality, but not one of the very small sizes.

Why would it necessarily be a man if it is a wind up? Most slight men would prefer not to be built like teenage boys I'd say so it's hardly some kind of boast.
