To be annoyed that modern clothes cater almost entirely for larger people?

Needed some new jeans over the weekend - I am about a 27"-28" waist. Most shops (in the big city shopping mall I visited) had only jeans in the 30s" and up- i.e. too big. I eventually managed to find some 20s in TX Maxx - about 10 jeans in that range, squeezed on the end of a rack catering entirely for 30-35s.

Then later I had to take a couple of pairs back as I didn't realise they made were of that horrible stretchy denim which ends up falling down my arse after walking for 5 minutes.

Same with tshirts - I used to be a Medium, now modern Mediums are far too large and baggy, so I've had to shift to Small. As usual, the vast majority of clothes racks are taken up by Mediums and Larges.

Only thing I can think is that as people have gotten fatter the clothes industry has shifted to cater for that. As for online shopping - had far too many problems to buy clthes onlines, esp if they're made for the US market... think I'd be a XX Small there. 😂

Oh how embarrassing - I totally forgot parents standing shaking at the school gates as they get ready to mainline Pringles and Coca Cola into their child’s bloodstream and then wheel their fat little cherubs home to play the PlayStation rather than ride bikes for miles with only a margarine butty to eat all day because snacks weren’t a thing ‘back then’ and people only ate one bite of food per day.

They are probably not even made that small, because no-one is such a tiny size. Only on mumsnet. OP is talking nonsense.

Plenty of teenage boys of adult height are that size, and some adult men. A men's small is not tiny, my 5ft 10, 16 year old wears a small.

DuesToTheDirt · 03/05/2023 22:52

I agree mostly - not for me but for DD, who is a young adult and size 6-8. I bought her some leggings as a present a couple of years ago and struggled to find any that wouldn't be baggy on her. For her birthday I said I'd buy her some t-shirts, so she found some online, but the smallest size available (10) was too big and they had to go back.

5128gap · 03/05/2023 22:53

You're right OP. Which is why the millions of women with waists even smaller than yours (can you believe that's even possible!?) have to go round butt naked while the big old fatty waists get to swan around in all the best clobber. Makes me fume it does.

We’ve lost sight of what a healthy body looks like.

It’s to flatter fat people.

You should be able to see a person’s ribs.

I have a size 10 top from the 70s which wouldn’t even fit round the big toe of someone who wears a size 10 now.

If you look back at old documentary films of the street nobody was fat.

I think that about covers everything you were hoping for.

It didn't take long for this shite to appear did it. Like clockwork every single time someone thinks they are being revolutionary by making the point about how massive everyone is compared to 50 years ago 😴

SallyWD · 03/05/2023 22:53

My DD is only 12 but very tall (probably 5 ft 6). She's slender so about a size 4 or 6. Never has any problem finding clothes to fit! I, on the other hand, am a very average, medium size 12 and find these sizes have often sold out. Many times there are only small or larger clothes available but no medium sizes.

Bayleaf25 · 03/05/2023 22:54

Is that a dress size uk 8? The shops are literally full of them so I haven’t encountered your problem at all I’m afraid! Where are you shopping?

Wow! Shock horror a size 10 was too big for someone who is a size 6-8! My dd is a size 6 too, she finds clothes just fine, crazy that on the whole Internet you couldn't find a size 6 tshirt and had to resort to buying one 2 sizes too big.

UWhatNow · 03/05/2023 22:56

Try ordering from Urban Outfitters if you’re size 16….or Flannels or Brandy Melville or any designer brands. YABU.

Yes, of course. That's how markets work.

This is what it was like for plus size people back in the day. Absolutely nothing.

Not that I think this is a good faith OP, but it's worth explaining because so many people truly don't understand how markets work and still insist that it's about "vanity" and lying to fat people.

A size 6 in a lot of shops was the old size 8. It's a pain for people who are below a size 8.

MillicentTrilbyHiggins · 03/05/2023 23:02

Againstmachine · 03/05/2023 22:42

Nope most jeans are sizes in inches not women's sizes.

I don't know many men who have a 27 inch waist.

I've never seen women's jeans sized in inches!

It's a pain for everyone. Sizing is a nightmare all round.

Mumsnetters don't like slim people 😂 you'll get flamed for this but I hear you.

That’s how bad it is on mumsnet 😂 if I hadn’t said it I swear somebody would have come along to tell us all how they had to give all their size 8 clothes from the 90s to their child to use as Barbie outfits because they simply would not fit in a human being nowadays since we’re all so fat now.

And that’s what op wants too - everyone to come along and wail about how the world’s full of fat people and they’re cluttering up all the clothes shops with their fat clothing.

Scarfweather · 03/05/2023 23:07

I agree that so many clothes are in an unfitted ‘baggy’ style and suspect it’s somewhat easier for clothes manufacturers to make, rather than fitted styles.
10s are sometimes hard to come by, but on the whole, with internet shopping included, it’s not really an issue for me buying size 8-10.

Mammalamma · 03/05/2023 23:08

I’ve been both ends of the scale and the problem finding my size in anything has always been the same. When I was looking for a 6 they were never available. When I looked for a size 18 they were never available. I’m now a size 10 after losing a lot of weight and guess what, I never find anything! When I was extremely slim I used to buy a lot of kids trousers as I’m super short too.

My son is stupidly tall and has a size 28 waist. He has loads of problems finding trousers that fit both waist and length so we usually buy online for him.

There does seem to be an orchestrated campaign going on at the moment. Where are they coming from? Did we make fun of another MRA website?

Try All saints, always in inches for women

Rightnowstraightaway · 03/05/2023 23:11

I used to be super skinny and also tall, like a size 6L. I did get very frustrated trying to find anything to fit and whilst no one gave me any sympathy because obviously I was thin, I feel your pain. I found that shopping in certain cities had noticeably different sizes in their shops depending on the demographic! In my city there's a trendy shopping centre full of designer stores, and a lower market one with Primark etc. Both have Next and I've noticed that the sizes in the trendy store are smaller than in the low market store!

I am no longer as skinny but I prefer to shop on Vinted and explicitly ask for waist size before buying.

Have you tried Nudie jeans? I got some in W29" (sized down from 30" as my Next jeans were a tad loose) and I should have stuck with 30" as they are too tight! They seem much better quality than on the high street.

Okunevo · 03/05/2023 23:11

MillicentTrilbyHiggins · 03/05/2023 23:02

Proper jeans brands often have inches, 24 and 25 are a small and big 6, 26 and 27 a small and big 8, and so on. It's much easier to find the right fit in smaller sizes.

Fat bashing on mumsnet is like horse riding at Downton Abbey. They don’t really have much to do, you know, it just passes the time.

The only thing better than starting a good old fat bash to encourage stories of how gross overweight people are is of course the glory of sneering at the disgusting working classes - a class which most of us are likely in, but which we can remove ourselves from by sneering at others for doing such crimes as having children named Jackson or using a toilet brush.
