To be grossed out by human albumin in Botox?

LittleBoPeepHasLostHerShit · 03/05/2023 19:23

I went for a Botox consultation the other week and was just about to sign the disclaimer when I read at the bottom of the fine print that Botox contains "an ingredient derived from human blood and although no cases of viral transmission have been reported, this risk cannot be completely excluded". Yikes! 🫣 Was I unreasonable to change my mind at that point and go home? The injector (a dental surgeon) seemed very surprised about this.

DO NOT GET IN THAT DENTIST'S CHAIR!!! 😱

ODFOx · 21/06/2023 21:52

@Qbish
'Sunk cost. The medication was already tested on animals for medicinal human use. So there's no extra harm in beauty use.'
On the contrary, Botox is batch tested for efficacy (toxicity).
Unlike pharmaceutical testing it isn't a sunk cost. It is ongoing animal use.

is it safe marathon man GIF

My dentist does Botox, fillers, electrocutions etc as a side line.

Againstmachine · 21/06/2023 22:37

Love people saying go to a aesthetician, like they are some medical experts.

It's a made up title it's rubbish.

It you want Botox in your face go ahead, but doesn't be swueemish about some ingredients, you are having horrible stuff put in your face after all.

Most dentists I know would be embarrassed to have this as a sideline.

And if you are decent one there is no need for this sideline.

Where's no embarrassment in being a medical practitioner that offers cosmetic injectables. It's a multi billion pound industry!

My dentist does Botox, fillers, electrocutions etc as a side line. Seems to be that or implants for our local dentists.

Oh thank you for this...I have had a crappy few days and this post gave me a really well needed laugh. I can think of a few people I would like to have electrocuted right now but I'm not sure my dentist offers this service!

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 21/06/2023 23:15

Really? Yet you were choosing whether to get something injected into your face by someone who probably isn’t medically trained?

windowopen · 22/06/2023 00:15

Because they are trained to drill and fill, stick on veneers….they aren’t aestheticians

Dentist here. Thanks to the PPs that we fight king our corner. Of course we are suitably qualified to undertake procedures such as facial aesthetics. Even then we do need to do extra training.
So many reasons why I'd say go to a dentist for this. No other profession including medics have as much specialist knowledge of the structures and anatomy of the head and neck.
We are expertly skilled and trained in dealing with medical emergencies, allergies, adverse reactions etc.
further more we don't just stick back on veneers. We are highly experienced at managing anxiety, administering anaesthesia, we are trained in radiology, we do oral surgery on a daily basis as well as conservative dentistry. We are licensed to prescribe medication including Botox, and don't need to work under the prediction of others.

I'm not so hot on my electrocution skills though if truth be told! 😂

Oh and can someone please enlighten me as to an aesthetician is? I've never come across one before. Genuinely are they doctors that specialise in Cosmetics or are they beauticians that have done a course?

So THIS is why no one can get an NHS dentist? They are spending their time on injecting lucrative cosmetic treatments instead!

Up here in Scotland an NHS extraction works out as £10 an hour. The practice owners take £5 of that. That's why dentists do private work as NHS is significantly underpaid.
Why shouldn't we do lucrative work? We're highly skilled and most of us have trained for more than 6 years to get our degrees and post grad listings.

That's a different thread entirely.

Redebs · 21/06/2023 21:00

Putting aside the botulinum bit, I wouldn't be ok with having human albumin injected. Many of these cosmetic drugs are poorly regulated and sourced irresponsibly.
If you're having botulinum toxins injected for medical reasons, through the NHS, fair enough. But a poorly regulated source halfway around the world could well contain factors for CJD or HIV, or any of hundreds of other serious pathogens

The manufacturing and supply of the medicines is not poorly regulated. All the botulinum toxin medicines in the U.K. are licensed and regulated just as any other medicine. It would be illegal to supply them if they were not. And several of them are now licensed for cosmetic treatment as well as for the original medical purposes.

It’s also illegal for anyone other than an appropriate prescriber to prescribe them. Aestheticians (whatever that means) cannot legally purchase them or prescribe them. Doctors, dentists and (possibly) some suitably qualified nurses or pharmacists can prescribe them (but I think only the ones that are licensed for the purpose). GMC requirements are for the prescriber to see the patient in person, but clearly there are unscrupulous practitioners out there. The government have said they will tighten up the regulations around this, but it’s all gone very quiet.

The ethics around the use of these products (use of donated human plasma and the on-going in vivo batch testing) is a whole other thing.

The only person I’d allow to inject things into my face would be a max fax surgeon or a dentist.

You can’t exactly forbid dentists (the vast majority of whom are private practitioners with NHS contracts) to undertake private work in their spare time. They aren’t slaves.

Every single private dentist in my town does it. It's a thing. I guess they are trained in facial nerves/muscles?

BeethovenNinth · 22/06/2023 11:19

I don’t want Botox but if I did would be happy a dentist did it as surely they are highly trained in facial anatomy?

HettieHelvetica · 22/06/2023 11:24

SurferRona · 03/05/2023 20:07

Why would you go to a DENTIST for this??? 😮😂 Have you no aestheticians where you live?

Dentists have a LOT of education related to facial muscles and are rather good at precision work in small areas. Botox isn’t my choice, but dentists are in no way under qualified to provide it.

LittleBoPeepHasLostHerShit · 03/05/2023 19:57

You're going to FREAK when you discover that Botox is a toxin!

All medicines are toxins FFS

Says the person who doesn’t realise humans get blood transfusions which contain blood.

I want to hear more about the weird stuff found in medicines now.

Bovine / porcine heart valves
Pig mucus used to make heparin an injection you are given to prevent blood clots
Insulin is from pigs
Vaccines incubated in chicken eggs
Faecal transplants for chronic C Diff

There’s no such thing as an NHS dentist. All dentists are private. Some just take agree to provide a certain number of units of treatment on behalf of the NHS.

The number of funded units is negotiatied each year. Aside from the fact that the payment per unit is rather low and sometimes difficult to break even on, if the practice in question doesn’t have any funded units predicted to be available, they can’t provide a service.

Private dental patients and sidelines like this are often what props up mixed dental practices and keeps the doors open and lights on.

Fetal bovine serum is very common in vaccine and biopharmaceutical research and manufacture.

It's harvested at abattoirs. If a slaughtered cow is found - after death - to be pregnant, her reproductive area is removed and chucked down a chute to what's often called the "calf processing area". The fetus is removed, injected in the heart without any anesthetic and has its blood removed. It's likely to be alive throughout this process.

Seriously, OP, you'd shit the fucking bed if you knew half the weird stuff that goes into medicines at various stages.

Hardly any of the insulins used in humans are from pigs these days. I know one person who uses it as he’s the only one the pharmacy supplies. Most of it is made in tanks genetically modified yeast

explainthistomeplease · 22/06/2023 21:27

@PronounWanker that's the point though isn't it? If it's medicine to save life or improve the quality of life it's far more justifiable than if it's to stop a few wrinkles for vanity's sake.

It's pretty bloody indefensible that we're carrying out inhumane processes for the sake of pure vanity

Absolutely, I agree.

I was replying to @baffledcoconut who wanted to know about the weird stuff in medicines. Sorry, I should've made that clearer!

Aesthetician is American for beauty therapist. She would you go to one of them to have poison injected into your face?
