To be grossed out by human albumin in Botox?

I went for a Botox consultation the other week and was just about to sign the disclaimer when I read at the bottom of the fine print that Botox contains "an ingredient derived from human blood and although no cases of viral transmission have been reported, this risk cannot be completely excluded". Yikes! 🫣 Was I unreasonable to change my mind at that point and go home? The injector (a dental surgeon) seemed very surprised about this.

Because they are trained to drill and fill, stick on veneers….they aren’t aestheticians

I think you’ll find they know considerably more about head and neck anatomy and physiology than any “aesthetician”. And they are legally allowed to prescribe.

Botox isn't for me. But if it was I'd sooner see a dentist than aesthetician.

Absolutely 💯
I would never have botox but if I did the only person injecting a toxin in and around my vital cranial and facial nerves would be someone who has a medical level understanding of anatomy.

clpsmum · 06/05/2023 08:44

You're not grossed out by injecting poison into your face for the sake of vanity though??? 🙄🤣

I want to hear more about the weird stuff found in medicines now.

Why would you go to a DENTIST for this??? 😮😂 Have you no aestheticians where you live?

Are you serious? Dentists are far more highly qualified.

That's grim OP. It would certainly put me off.

ODFOx · 20/06/2023 23:02

Botox is batch tested for efficacy in rats.
It's cultured in tissue from dead people and tested in rats to check how toxic it is before it's injected into people to stop their nerves working properly .
Used as a nerve blocker for people with chronic pain : defensible imo.
Used to stop vain people getting smile lines: not defensible and pretty revolting imo.

Hotpinkangel19 · 20/06/2023 23:37

I think its amazing. My MIL had it injected into her bladder to help with her incontinence, it's made an amazing difference to her life.

I’m still waiting for someone to explain whose blood they get the human albumin from.

So a thing used for medication is fine, the same thing used for not-medication (to nobody's detriment or deprivation of the substance) is "revolting"? How so?

I don't understand why this is a difficult argument to grasp. It's the same principle many people apply to whether they object to testing products on animals — often justifiable if it's medications (and kept to the minimum necessary), but less so if it's cosmetics. Or killing animals — some people would consider it justifiable to kill animals for food, but "revolting" to kill animals solely for pleasure.

Redebs · 21/06/2023 21:00

Putting aside the botulinum bit, I wouldn't be ok with having human albumin injected. Many of these cosmetic drugs are poorly regulated and sourced irresponsibly.
If you're having botulinum toxins injected for medical reasons, through the NHS, fair enough. But a poorly regulated source halfway around the world could well contain factors for CJD or HIV, or any of hundreds of other serious pathogens

Gowlett · 21/06/2023 21:03

WTF is human albumin?
I’m grossed out by Botox, regardless.
But fair fucks to anyone who wants it.

backinthebox · 21/06/2023 21:07

Botox is a neurotoxin derived from Botulinum Clostridium bacteria that causes muscle paralysis, a feature that is exploited to freeze your facial muscles. Other well known neurotoxins include tetanus, snake bites, arsenic, satin, and various chemotherapy treatments. Of all the things to be worried about in a syringe full of botox, the fact that there is a blood-derived product is probably the least thing to worry about!

ODFOx · 21/06/2023 21:10

'So a thing used for medication is fine, the same thing used for not-medication (to nobody's detriment or deprivation of the substance) is "revolting"? How so?'
@Obish
Cost benefit analysis.
There is undeniably a cost to animal testing. If the benefit is human health I believe the cost is acceptable. If the benefit is human vanity or fashion I believe that the cost is not justified.
Is that hard to understand?

ODFOx · 21/06/2023 21:12

Gah: misread the name!!

Thereoughttobeclowns · 21/06/2023 21:13

Dentists make the best Botox practitioners. They are experts in the maxillofacial area. I would never have it administered by someone who was just an aesthetician.

I couldn't get too worked up about human albumin, no more than I could about carmine in my lipstick or gelatin in beauty products.

Sunk cost. The medication was already tested on animals for medicinal human use. So there's no extra harm in beauty use.

Not in the case of Botox, where (if the poster above is correct) each batch requires more donated human tissue and more rat experimental subjects. The more people use it cosmetically, the more batches need to be made and tested.

Oh, I see. Then I can see that that argument would stand.

It’s a protein found in human blood.

It's all a bit Countess Bathory, except she was alleged to have bathed in human blood to keep herself young, not injected herself with it.

My dentist does Botox, fillers, electrocutions etc as a side line. Seems to be that or implants for our local dentists.

I can think of a few people I might send along to that dentist with my personal recommendation…
