To have gotten the ick with my partner over his drinking habits?

So this is likely a me problem as I have mild OCD and often get irritated at small things that I know aren’t a real problem, I never say anything because I know it’s my issue not theirs. Looking for some perspective on this one though because it’s really putting me off my newish partner (of 5 months).

He has a lot of good points but the fact that he drinks soft drinks/fizzy pop all day long out of the bottle is really putting me off. I can’t even articulate why, it sort of feels embarrassing somehow? He also pulls his face at veg and eats sweets and chocolate constantly, he’s not overweight though.

I haven’t said anything and just tried to put it out of my mind because I don’t trust my own judgement on what’s annoying and what isn’t, but today we went for a day out together and he pulled a 2 litre bottle of Coca Cola out of his bag and started drinking from it in public. I felt sick and mortified, I didn’t want to be seen with him and I said I had a headache so that we could leave early.

Would that really put you off a partner or is my mind just blowing it out of proportion?

Cringe away 😂I am certainly not cringing as there's nothing to cringe about.

It IS utterly bizarre anyone would refer to non fruit juice as "juice" it isn't regional "dialect" it's just they've got it wrong.

Of course it's regional dialect. You're making yourself look stupid now.

RampantIvy · 03/05/2023 12:17

What are non-alcohol drinkers allowed to drink then?

I drink the occasional fizzy drink - usually lime and soda or 0 alcphol beer when I am driving, but I don't go to the pub every day, nor do I chug 2 litres of sweet fizzy drinks every day.

My response was about people drinking fizzy sweet drinks every day.

Which half? Top or bottom?

Making grammar mistakes is wrong.

You might have decided that this instance is dressed up as dialect but it's not.

"Dialect is entirely different words or ways of communicating together"

Juice is not an entirely different word, it's just the wrong word for what it is being used for.

superplumb · 03/05/2023 12:26

Weird he carries a huge bottle around with him and his child like palate would put me off.
Odd glass of coke is fine, esp if driving. Although I agree with op to some extent, my husband has a hot chocolate when we go to a coffee place. I'm mortified by this!!

ferneytorro · 03/05/2023 12:34

Hydrangeatea · 03/05/2023 11:27

And???

That doesn't explain anything. Juice is fruit juice, the juice of fruit so if it is fizzy it must be off. I am seriously confused!

No, juice can be another name for the stuff that you dilute - squash. The fizzy bit yes see where you are coming from as squash isn't fizzy.

And (appreciate not your post) the term "pop" is widely used, I am northern and use it and was dealing with a Canadian at Lehmans (that dates it) and myself and a colleague said pop and then said sorry that's a bit of a northern term - no he said it was a term he'd used.

Obviously Corporation pop is best health wise!

MrsSlocombesCat · 03/05/2023 12:35

He might be on the autistic spectrum. Me and my son are and we drink a lot of fizzy pop. He only eats beige food but I do have a varied diet including vegetables (but not fruit, I just don’t like it).

MrsSlocombesCat · 03/05/2023 12:38

I should add that we drink the zero sugar stuff.

PollyPut · 03/05/2023 12:39

Sounds very much like he will soon have dodgy teeth requiring expensive dental work and possibly develop diabetes type 2. I would talk to him about it, kindly. Especially the diabetes.

See if you can help him understand why a change would help his health.

If not, well - would you want DC to see their father drinking like this?

Makes sense to be fair.

MeridasMum · 03/05/2023 12:47

I knew someone who got through a couple of 2litre bottles of Diet Coke per day. The burping was horrendous! So disgusting! I could never date someone who did that

What's your view on bread rolls/baps / teacakes then - who is wrong and who is right (that's a nice way of saying you are wrong by the way).

Just off to get some juice (squash).

I can "sort of" get why someone might mistakenly refer to squash as "juice" as I guess there is an element of fruit concentrate in squash.

However referring to coke as fizzy juice is just the wrong use of the word juice, there is no juice in it. Juice is, and I quote "the liquid obtained from or present in fruit or vegetables"

Teacake is a teacake bread product, bap is a bread product, not sure why you are trying to draw a comparison to using the word juice in this instance?

You're mortified he has hot chocolate?
Why?
It's a perfectly normal hot drink. More and more people are having that over coffee and tea in my observation

What a bizarre thing to be embarrassed about.

Aren't adults allowed hot chocolate?

What's the age cut off? 😂

I love fizzy flavoured water. Where do we stand on that?

Sorry, I've now "gotten the ick" 😂

Only the Tesco stuff if that helps.

There's something childish about drinking fizzy drinks every day as an adult?

Why? Should we only drink tea and coffee and alcohol?

Wow you'd not be able to deal with 90% of the adults I know. We all drink fizzy drinks every day!

Yes we should only drink tea coffee and alcohol if you want in moderation. Fizzy drinks are very unhealthy and bad for your teeth. The only fizzy drink I have is sparkling water. Orange juice very very occasionally. Fizzy drinks taste awful anyway now they are not allowed to put sugar in them.

Coffee does have some health benefits. Fizzy drinks have nothing you couldn’t get from water.

They may not have health benefits but they're much more enjoyable to drink than a glass of plain water😂

Honestly, I never realised how many grown adults dislike other grown adults drinking normal drinks - though I suspect it's one of those weird MN anomalies as it's not something I've ever seen in real life.

coxesorangepippin · 03/05/2023 16:21

Definitely not a turn on

StonwEd · 03/05/2023 16:34

I dunno there’s something a bit ick about a grown man standing at the coffee machine and saying “ooh time for a hot choc I think” while rubbing their hands together 🫣
might have happened at work today

I mean, the hand rubbing is weird but I really don't understand what's so weird about grown adults drinking hot chocolate Confused

StonwEd · 03/05/2023 16:45

I mean it’s completely lighthearted, I just don’t have any social companions or family members that drink it, seems like a kids drink.
perfectly happy to accept that some adults like different things
