To have gotten the ick with my partner over his drinking habits?

So this is likely a me problem as I have mild OCD and often get irritated at small things that I know aren’t a real problem, I never say anything because I know it’s my issue not theirs. Looking for some perspective on this one though because it’s really putting me off my newish partner (of 5 months).

He has a lot of good points but the fact that he drinks soft drinks/fizzy pop all day long out of the bottle is really putting me off. I can’t even articulate why, it sort of feels embarrassing somehow? He also pulls his face at veg and eats sweets and chocolate constantly, he’s not overweight though.

I haven’t said anything and just tried to put it out of my mind because I don’t trust my own judgement on what’s annoying and what isn’t, but today we went for a day out together and he pulled a 2 litre bottle of Coca Cola out of his bag and started drinking from it in public. I felt sick and mortified, I didn’t want to be seen with him and I said I had a headache so that we could leave early.

Would that really put you off a partner or is my mind just blowing it out of proportion?

Yes it would put me off as well. Just bin him.

Zanatdy · 03/05/2023 06:31

That would give me the ick. I hate someone drinking out of a bottle and putting it back into the fridge. Pour it into a glass.

"Fizzy pop"? How old are you? 3?

I'm 64 and would describe it as fizzy pop because that's what it is.
The eating and drinking habits of this manchild sound like those of a three year old though.

Wow you'd not be able to deal with 90% of the adults I know. We all drink fizzy drinks every day!

Most adults I know don't drink fizzy drinks every day unless you count tonic water and sparkling wine in this. They all drink the occasional sweet fizzy drink - I had a coke with my curry at the weekend, but my friends have grown out of drinking these kind of drinks.

Bananalanacake · 03/05/2023 06:47

What are his teeth like

Gtsr443 · 03/05/2023 06:50

I don't care what someone eats or drinks but I couldn't be with an adult who used the phrase "gotten the ick".

Pottedpalm · 03/05/2023 06:50

YABVU to have ‘gotten’ anything.

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/05/2023 06:53

Would you prefer A 2lite of cider

Yes dragging a 2l bottle about seems mad

Would smaller cans be acceptable

But drinking a fizzy drink from a can isn't the end of the world

I drink from the can - might be lilt or an energy drink

Does that make me a bad Person ?

I eat fruit and veg though 😁

If something's put you off I'd listen to your gut.

I was once dumped apparently because of the way I ate chicken. There were so many things wrong with that relationship (mainly he was the most boring 24 year old alive) but it was fair enough that it all concentrated itself on my bone-chewing technique. It needed to end and that was the trigger.

Ladysquamy · 03/05/2023 07:08

He sounds like a child. I would get the ick too. He's pulling faces at vegetables and he's 40?

SummerDawn2000 · 03/05/2023 07:12

Ask him to put it in a glass. Op you can’t help your OCD but as a couple you compromise aka

he outs the fizzy in the glass. Simple.

does he do other things that annoy you ? I wouldn’t end a relationship over this but I’d sure as hell be like use a glass mate. Come on.

also. You are not in the wrong here.

ItsCalledAConversation · 03/05/2023 07:13

Yes I would be put off by this. It says he’s ignorant (prevailing scientific proof that fizzy pop/beige food) is very bad for you), immature (eating toddler soft play type food and avoiding anything nutritious) and also a bit of a weirdo (carrying a 2l bottle of the stuff around with him). LTB.

Also sorry but same here!

Theres so much of this on here these days, also saying “fuming” without a trace of irony and I even saw an OP who put “x” after her thread title and “xx” after every post on the thread. Huns are coming for us.

Sorry for the detail OP.

newyearsresolurion · 03/05/2023 07:19

It's the rotten teeth that will put me off which he DEFINITELY has

Mortimercat · 03/05/2023 07:21

I also find an adult saying “gotten the ick” more annoying than drinking fizzy drinks.

I initially assumed you meant he had an individual sized bottle of Diet Coke or whatever and to be honest, no I wouldn’t find that particularly odd or offensive. It is very odd that he carries a 2 litre bottle around though and yes I dare say I would be embarrassed if my husband carried a bottle that size around with him.

Neurodiversitydoctor · 03/05/2023 07:23

It is a sign of an immature palate, unless he has had severly limited opportunities (no resturant meals, no foreign travel) I'd be binning him off. My 19 yo doesn't drink soft drinks evert day FFS he understands they are nutritionally disastrous, addictive and ethically questionable. I couldn't be with an adult he didn't understand these basic facts or worse didn't care.

Agree about the teeth too.

This is what I was thinking, the teeth will be the next issue, and you know how bad men are with going to a dentist! I'd be binning him off, seriously not attractive.

CatchHimDerry · 03/05/2023 08:43

@ItsCalledAConversation 😂 they are among us

Lcb123 · 03/05/2023 08:48

I just couldn’t be with someone who puts that rubbish in their body every day.

"Toddler soft play type food" - hahahaha. Bin him, OP. Although I have to say that I know a very senior professional man who is otherwise witty, charming and a complete delight who chugs Diet Coke out of two litre bottles at his desk at work....

FrostyFifi · 03/05/2023 09:00

I wouldn't want to be with someone who gave that little of a shit about their health.

Cupoftea80 · 03/05/2023 09:05

It’s the drinking from a 2L bottle that would put me off the most. Use a glass! Or buy a normal sized can or bottle. No problem with
fizzy drinks really, I enjoy an occasional coke from time to time. But if it’s full sugar coke and he’s drinking it all the time I’d be worried about his teeth, and general health!

If you like him could you bring it up? Or drop some hints- if my DH did that I wouldn’t be able to stop myself saying something along the lines of “blimey, you’re thirsty!” It could be noone has really mentioned it before, or he’s been single so long he’s got into some gross habits without realising.

What is he like at your place, does he bring his own massive bottle of pop every time?

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 03/05/2023 09:08

This thread is batshit 😂

Why can't grown adults drink milk, coke or squash? Confused

Hydrangeatea · 03/05/2023 09:09

Falt · 02/05/2023 23:32

I broke up with someone like this. He ate / drank like a child let loose with their lunch money. Absolute fucking nightmare trying to cook because he refused to touch anything that wasn't beige and stored in a freezer. Imagine watching a grown assed man eating chicken nuggets and smileys every night 🫠. Wouldn't touch vegetables. Would only drink fizzy juice. By the end I'd managed to get him to try soup for the first time in his life. Fucking SOUP. I still get the ick just thinking about it. He was absolutely gorgeous as well and excellent in the bedroom but I just couldn't be attracted to him any longer.

How on earth can someone drink fizzy juice? You mean they are drinking gone off orange/apple juice which has made it fizzy? How utterly bizarre

doadeer · 03/05/2023 09:15

Being anti veg wouldn't work for me. His teeth are all going to fall out 😳
