‘Influencers’ taking newborns on holiday

I’ve noticed a lot of influencers taking their newborn or very tiny babies (under a few months old) on long haul holidays. AIBU to think this is a bit irresponsible? Long aeroplane journeys with all the germs, taking them to a very hot country when they’re so small with such fragile skin, mosquitos…

I can completely understand that sometimes people need to travel with small babies, or having a holiday when the baby is a bit older and more resilient. But it seems a bit irresponsible flying a 1 month old to Abu Dhabi seems selfish to me.

Prepared to be told IABU!

@Beseen22 , one of mine was born in AD - for the last day before I went home I shared a room with a Bedouin* woman, who clearly thought I was utterly clueless. I had wrapped dd in a shawl, ready to go home (it was the cool season) - she grabbed her from me, saying, ‘Laa, laa, laa!’ (No, no,no!) and immediately re-wrapped her, very tight swaddling fashion, like a little Egyptian mummy. 😂
*Matron at the time (ages ago now) was a Brit, who apologised to me for kicking me out a bit early, but she was more concerned with such local women, who ‘aren’t so able to take care of themselves’ - by which I dare say she meant access to plenty of clean water for washing.

I went to the loo and when I got back to my bed a very old Bedu lady had dipped her finger into the square of butter on my tray and was letting my 2 day old son suck it off her finger. 40 years on I still think of her with affection.

And just to say the Bedu lady in your room would have gone home to 40 Days of being looked after and being served hand and foot by her family as is the tradition in Islam/this part of the world. She’d either have gone home to her mum or mother in law or they’d have gone to her. And if they couldn’t do it (perhaps) because of their age then other female members of the family would have stepped in. It’s a really nice time.

Bit of a difference between living somewhere and going on a non essential holiday, seems to be missed on you lot though..

All holidays are non-essential. Better ban them.

AD1996 · 30/04/2023 11:02

It’s nothing to do with you

EustaceTheMonk · 30/04/2023 11:02

Who cares.

I took DC1 to Tenerife when he was 10 weeks and DC2 to Cyprus at the same age. Our family had lovely holidays, both DC were sleeping 10-12 hours straight through each night and they had a few naps during the day too. I packed an un assembled little bouncy chair and put that together and used it occasionally during the day around the pool are.
One particularly highlight was strolling along the lovely promenades in Tenerife.
I didn’t think it was a thing to wait a certain amount of time before going on holiday, in fact these holidays were a lot easier than when my DC started to crawl.
You sound jealous OP.

Honestly I could not get heat up about this at all

I think it's a good opportunity for mum (and dad) to just chill. Eat what they want be with baby 100% no housework what a dream!!! If I could have done it I would have!!

ElBandito · 30/04/2023 11:07

PollyThePixie · 30/04/2023 10:47

Do they still think there's a link between flying and SID

a quick google says no.

Fair enough, couldn't be bothered to check. In that case I think all influencers should have to take their babies on holiday. Twice.

Here come the links!!!!

Can you imagine the AIBU if a mother in law did this lol

There are no studies on influencers taking newborns to Abu Dhabi

Do you mean the one about newborn immune system? It’s science so either it’s right or it isn’t

To be fair there’s usually ‘have you got a study for that?’ So I was pre empting the inevitable request

Plus it’s dangerous to say newborns should be exposed to ‘as many germs as possible’ but knew nobody would believe it if I said so 🤷🏼‍♀️

TheKeatingFive · 30/04/2023 11:12

I've never heard any advice from the nhs or baby charities to say that newborns should avoid travel.

Anyone else?

Gosh, aren't you delightful. Who put you in charge of what is essential to someone else? But I have a solution - don't follow "influences" and you won't have to worry about their childcare, and will have a lot more time to do something actually useful. Personally I wouldn't know an influencer if it got up and bit me.... I don't have time for such things.

If this thread was about the radfords nobody would be half as defensive! It’s really weird.

I would imagine that the youngest of 5 children gets exposed to plenty of germs at home.

Oh give over.

This was just a crappy attempt to start a bitch fest about someone else's parenting.

I'm gladdened that you've been handed your arse, and a bit embarrassed for you at the same time.

ThisSingleMama · 30/04/2023 11:15

The Radfords?

Each to their own

Fifi0 · 30/04/2023 11:18

I took DD to Australia as a baby it was easy just feeding and cuddling.

kittensinthekitchen · 30/04/2023 11:18

Sorry did you mean to post this on tattle?

NoraBattysCurlers · 30/04/2023 11:18

I would respectfully suggest to @Coffeeandbourbons to get a life and not spend her time obsessing about 'influencers'. Jealousy and envy only sow the seeds of unhappiness.

ThisSingleMama · 30/04/2023 11:19

@Coffeeandbourbons I didn't click your link, looked a bit off
