AIBU to think this homage to the King will go badly wrong?

According to BBC news: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-65435426

There are hopes that people will say out loud: "I swear that I will pay true allegiance to Your Majesty, and to your heirs and successors according to law. So help me God."

The Archbishop of Canterbury will then proclaim "God save the King", with all asked to respond: "God save King Charles. Long live King Charles. May the King live forever."

This is surely madness. Asking everyone in the Abbey - sure. People crowding nearby might be swayed to say "Hail the King" or something similarly short. But hoping for video footage of crowds in parks and pubs shouting a great long sentence that most don't fully buy into, then doing it again and with "live forever"! Does Charles really think he's liked that much? Is he? It doesn't seem very British at all, and seems destined to be a mess of people saying random stuff loudly.

The new photos were taken in the Blue Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace

Coronation: Public asked to swear allegiance to King Charles

The pledge is among several changes to the service, which will incorporate female clergy and other faiths.

"but we do not ever since the revolution swear allegiance to the monarch."

Not only do people wanting to get British citizenship have to swear allegiance, but also anyone elected to Parliament. Which means that there are currently seven democratically elected MPs who cannot represent their constituents at Westminster because they refuse to swear an oath of allegiance.

Members of the Armed Forces swear allegiance too. There’s a commission on our wall that says my bloke is one of Her Majesty’s well beloved.

thank you @Puzzledandpissedoff (great name)

Just read that Angela Levin , arch royalist , will NOT be swearing allegiance and says it is a step too far

Massive own goal on the part of the 'royals'

Fuck that, pile of shite.

This ⬆️

It ain't the 1950's and people don't religiously follow the upper classes in that way anymore.

My Nan's generation was the last one to blindly follow that crap without questioning any of it.

That single comma deserves a partner. Tsk. As for shouting allegiance at my telly, no, King, I won't be doing that. But will watch as will never see an

Not a snowball’s chance in hell I would do this. If I have an allegiance, it’s to the country Charles happens to be the Constitutional Monarch of, not to the Crown. I think this is a mistake and doesn’t reflect well on Charles (he may have had nothing to do with the idea) as it looks like he wants forelock tugging subservience rather than earning respect. It sounds like a think tank / planning committee got carried away with its own cleverness and didn’t recognise how this might appear to people outside their excited little bubble.

I completely agree. Whoever had this idea is really not reading the room. Even if it wasn’t Charles’ idea he must have agreed to it. Support for the monarchy is not high in this country and has fallen since the Queen died.

They could have taken an opportunity to show that they’re going to modernise a bit more, cut down on spending on the event whilst keeping the pageantry which is still quite popular (including with overseas tourists who bring in income for the UK). Instead we get this.

Even that generation had those who didn't want a monarchy. My grandad is 97 years old and has never supported the royals. He fought in WWII where countless young people lost their lives while the king paraded round in military uniform.

He has always said he signed up for his country but the king could get to hell.

The notion that the royals serve the people is utter BS and this pledge of allegiance highlights that all the more

It has not been part of any previous coronation, it's a new idea. Peers would swear allegiance, but nobody ever thought it was a good idea to ask the general public to start reciting lengthy sentences in unison. If you wanted them to sing God Save the King, then at least people have some idea what to do. This is somewhat different.

I think they’ve created this new tradition to try and shore up some loyalty/popularity for ol’ Charlie. They know the reputation of The Firm has taken a beating after the Prince Andrew rape revelations and the treatment of Meghan.

I for one will not be uttering a word, looking at pictures of Charles and Camilla is like looking at aliens, they are so far removed from normal life.

BlueAndGreen89 · 30/04/2023 21:06

For a moment there I thought I’d been transported back to medieval England. What a strange thing to suggest people say. I wonder who in their right mind thought we would want to?

Blossomtoes · 30/04/2023 22:19

Ffs @vera99. She’s not the other woman. He’s been widowed for 25 years and they’ve been married for 18. She doesn’t need sympathy, it’s obvious that they’re very happy. It’s hardly surprising he lost it. He’d lost his mother less than a week earlier and he was being paraded round the whole of the UK at a time when he was overcome with grief. I’d hate to be judged by my (probably frankly mad) behaviour days after my mum died.

SerafinasGoose · 30/04/2023 22:22

Looks like the temporary honeymoon he experienced directly after the death of his mother has quickly worn off. And those wheels were already set in motion with 'Pengate'. This twerp doesn't exactly help himself; then again, the Windsors were never renowned for their sharp intellectual prowess.

Anyone fancy a sweepstake on how many years it will take before the questions about their future become too loud and persistent to be ignored?

I give it 5 years.

Don't rise to it. Old Vera is on here 24 hours a day posting unfunny anti royalist shit. Ignore Ignore Ignore.

He committed adultery with her. Once a OW/OM, always a OW/OM.

If he thinks this is a good way of being inclusive he has seriously lost the plot.

Who cares, people can do what they want. We get an extra day off work, whoop!

WormerWhep · 30/04/2023 23:00

Medieval England? I thought Charles is King of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. There is no such thing as a king or queen of England. History 101

GodSaveTheClean · 30/04/2023 23:53

Nope.
Underwhelmed by the whole thing and just pissed off at the amount of plastic tat being produced for this shower.
And those people already camping along the Mall. Really? Nothing better to do?

YouWonJayne · 30/04/2023 23:55

Cooknook · 30/04/2023 07:01

It's just tradition, its been part of coronations for hundreds of years. Its not like its going to be monitored or enforced is it.

Exactly.

Dont say it if you don’t want to, you won’t get into trouble if you don’t, but it’s just part of the pomp and ceremony.

KingSpaniel · 01/05/2023 00:17

@YouWonJayne but it isn’t and it hasn’t! Charles has added it in a desperate and utterly embarrassing attempt to boost his popularity. It’s never been done before (and hopefully won’t be again!).
