Last week I turned down a new job as the holiday entitlement was 20 days, save 4 for Christmas. I felt this was a but low as I currently get 25 and my previous role was 25 too.

AIBU is 20 average and I've just been lucky? It was the saving for Christmas too that really swung it for me

Would love to know where pp with very generous leave allowances work

Very likely public sector.

Very few organisations that have to make a profit to survive are as profligate with time off.

I worked in a local authority as a hild protection social worker. Its one of the key recruitment incentives to attract staff.

rothbury · 28/04/2023 06:37

I get 35 days plus the bank holidays. 35 hour week as standard so often have Friday afternoons off as already done my hours by then.

NOT public sector.

CeeJay81 · 28/04/2023 06:53

Not sure what it is in days. work 35 hours pw, so slightly pro rata. 7.6 weeks including bank holidays(includes extra for long service). Open every day bar Xmas day and Easter Sunday.

I’m in Higher Education (professional services, not teaching). Not public sector although has similarities. We absolutely do have to make a profit to survive! Although we are not there to serve shareholders.

My husband works for a fintech though and he gets almost the same as me, their staff benefits are very generous for private sector. If you want to attract the best staff you have to look after them.

devildeepbluesea · 28/04/2023 06:58

It’s statutory minimum but yes that’s on the low side these days.

maggiemuff · 28/04/2023 07:04

27 days plus bank holidays and half day Christmas Eve

LlynTegid · 28/04/2023 07:07

What you would have had is only three weeks a year plus one day of your choosing. So if you had to use a couple of days for unexpected things, that only means outside Christmas two weeks off and some odd days.

So a fortnight's holiday, one week at Christmas, and no other week off.

You made a sensible decision OP.

33 plus bank holidays, that plus pension make my job tolerable

UndercoverCop · 28/04/2023 07:11

I've worked for my current employer for more than 15 years though, new starters get 25

bottleofwataaaaaar · 28/04/2023 07:12

My work is the same. I wouldn't manage it if I didn't work pt.
All of my jobs have been statutory minimum. It's hard if you have little dc. Feel like I spent most days looking after them when they were sick.

yakkyok · 28/04/2023 07:17

in most cases it will be public sector

FrenchFancie · 28/04/2023 07:19

I work as a TA so we don’t get leave, as such - we get paid for 4 weeks of the holiday instead. I get BH if they fall on my workings days and not if they don’t. But our ‘leave’ entitlement is 20 days.

FrenchFancie · 28/04/2023 07:20

Husband is civil servant (has been for over 20 years) and has something like 35 days leave now? Plus he gets TOIL on any time he works over the 37 1/2 hours….

IDontWantToBeAPie · 27/04/2023 22:18

Oh sorry didn't realise you meant 4 for Christmas you'd have to save. Doesn't everyone have to save enough for Christmas? People don't just get a week off do they?

We do! We close the day before Christmas Eve (sometimes earlier if our VC is feeling generous) and don't open again until 2nd January.

I work at a university and it's the only time we all properly switch off because the whole sector is closed you don't feel the need to check emails or just do a bit of work.

AnneElliott · 28/04/2023 08:57

I get 31 plus bank holidays and then am allowed to use flexi time for any hours I work above the weekly requirement.

TreesandFish · 28/04/2023 09:15

I've been getting 25+8 for at least 15 years. I would not accept any less than that

Taenia · 28/04/2023 09:28

I get 30 days leave (was 25 but got extra 5 after 5 years service), plus 8 bank hols, plus shut down period between Christmas and New year.

Ragwort · 28/04/2023 09:32

Mine is ridiculously complicated in that it's in hours, I work part time, I get extra for being there over five years, we are expected to work BHs ... and it is hard to get the time off anyway as it is retail and need to cover the shop - charity shop so no other paid staff Confused. The plus side is that no one seems to really check .. but it would obviously be noticed if we were closed !

throwaway201809 · 28/04/2023 09:42

I work in finance. I get 35 + the bank holidays. Can also buy an extra 5 each year but never have
