To ask about your annual leave

Last week I turned down a new job as the holiday entitlement was 20 days, save 4 for Christmas. I felt this was a but low as I currently get 25 and my previous role was 25 too.

AIBU is 20 average and I've just been lucky? It was the saving for Christmas too that really swung it for me

I get 25 days plus 8 days for bank Holidays that we can use at any time and work the BH. We also get our birthday, half a day Christmas Eve and 2 well being days. So 36.5 days. We can also buy up to 10 days (which I do) . So I have 46.5 days

Awkwardusername · 27/04/2023 21:44

I get 30, plus bank holidays, and we close over Christmas and New Year without it coming out of our allowance.

Northernsoullover · 27/04/2023 21:45

I get 28 plus bank holidays... and flexi! So every month I take a day off without touching my annual leave.

Jules912 · 27/04/2023 21:47

I get 30 plus bank holidays ( well prorated as I'm part time) but 5 of those are a long service award so I wouldn't expect that anywhere else. 25 is the standard for people who've been here less than 5 years, with options to buy 5 more, and I wouldn't consider less unless it was a big jump in pay and I could buy some.

Blanketpolicy · 27/04/2023 21:50

Current company 34 including BHs. BHs are floating so we can choose to take or work. The only ones that are pretty fixed are the Christmas week and New Years day.

I generally work from home on BHs as not only is it quieter as fewer people are in, I can get on with things. I also hate going out when everywhere is mobbed; it was good when ds was younger as I could take the extra days off to cover summer holidays instead.

Previous company we started at 34 days a year but when you hit 10, 15, 20, 25 years service you got an extra day each year so I had 38 days a year eventually which was great (until they went bust!)

Kidsandcat · 27/04/2023 21:54

25 days, plus bank hols, plus days between xmas and New year.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 27/04/2023 21:54

I get 32.5 plus bank holidays but I’m aware that’s a good deal

Letsdance8188 · 27/04/2023 22:13

I'm amazed reading these replies - I've only ever had 20 + bank hols and didn't realise it was standard to get more than that. I'm having to take unpaid days just to try and cover school holidays!

IDontWantToBeAPie · 27/04/2023 22:17

20 is the minimum + bank holidays. So 20+4+8 is quite a lot.

I get 28 with no bank holidays

IDontWantToBeAPie · 27/04/2023 22:18

Oh sorry didn't realise you meant 4 for Christmas you'd have to save. Doesn't everyone have to save enough for Christmas? People don't just get a week off do they?

Oopsididitagaintomorrow · 27/04/2023 22:21

I get 28 plus bank Holidays
1.5 used foe over Christmas and company give us the rest

Jelly0naplate · 27/04/2023 22:28

41 days including the bank holidays and you can buy up to 2 extra weeks each year.

I get 3 days extra leave for the compulsory Christmas - New Year closedown. Doesn't come out of my 35 days annual leave. I can also build up TOIL for extra days off. I know how lucky I am.

We do, we finish the day before Christmas Eve and go back the day after New Year's Day. We also get the standard Bank Holidays plus additional Grace and Favour days (Tuesdays after three of the Bank Holidays). I also get 28 days annual leave so often have annual leave to carry over from year to year.

We do. Depends on your sector. We don’t open between Christmas and New Year but don’t need annual leave for it.

Kyse · 27/04/2023 23:03

Ours has gone up recently to 25 plus bank holidays but we have to use some if we want time off over Christmas
I get 28 plus bank holidays (length of time I've worked there)

Kyse · 27/04/2023 23:04

Oh and because it's a small department and nobody else reads the newspaper articles on how to maximise your leave... I get a lot of time off GrinBlush

Or they just don't want to take it in that way? I see those articles but prefer lots of little pockets of leave to one long stretch

Kyse · 27/04/2023 23:25

@SweetSakura I don't think so.. everyone else takes long stretches usually and I used to do 2-3 days
Past two years I've changed mine to maximise it and nobody else ever wants the same leave. Definitely not complaining Grin

BlanketPile · 28/04/2023 01:07

Damn, interesting thread.
I get statutory minimum, but for various reasons I wasnt able to take mine. I ended last year with at least 13 days owing, plus leiu days. I couldn't carry over or get paid out for them, so they were lost. But then, I am lucky I love my job, my kids are teens and we dont really have the money to travel abroad. My boss lost about the same amount if days too.

JudgeRudy · 28/04/2023 01:13

It's common. It's the legal minimum. Anyone getting 25 days is doing OK. 30 plus is usually for long service public sector worker.

JudgeRudy · 28/04/2023 01:15

You get exactly the same as everyone else. You've just chosen specific days that suit you.

Newestname002 · 28/04/2023 01:22

transformandriseup · 27/04/2023 19:40

Now I need to factor in school holidays I would turn down anything less than 25.

Yes I used to work out whether the company paid me enough to buy in extra holiday if their holiday allowance was on the lower side. I found it focused my mind if I converted how much money it cost me in reduced holiday days and how much the salary and pension benefits were before I made a decision. 🌹

feeona123 · 28/04/2023 02:04

I get 25 plus b/h plus 3 days at Christmas. Also buy two more weeks as well.

CurlyTop1980 · 28/04/2023 06:30

In my old job I would get 35 days a/l. 1 day extra for birthday. I day extra at Xmas, 8 Bank Holidays and I bought an additional 5 days.

But I did have over 20 years continuing service. I now work in a school and get 18 weeks off.

I think 20 is too low. I would've turned this down too.
