To ask about your annual leave

Stixy · 27/04/2023 19:31

Last week I turned down a new job as the holiday entitlement was 20 days, save 4 for Christmas. I felt this was a but low as I currently get 25 and my previous role was 25 too.

AIBU is 20 average and I've just been lucky? It was the saving for Christmas too that really swung it for me

The last admin job I had only allowed 20 days leave plus bank holidays. It was minimum wage as well. DH got 25 plus bank holidays at his job (private sector). County council jobs often offer 30.

FirstnameSuesecondnamePerb · 27/04/2023 21:17

I would never accept less than 25. Currently 25 plus I buy an extra 3, plus BH.

OP did you say anything about the annual leave allowance and was it in the original job advert?

I told them I want taking it and that was a big factor why. It wasn't in the advert no but that's not unusual

Talkingtomyhouseplants · 27/04/2023 21:20

I get 27 + BH (have to save one for Christmas)

DP gets 31 + BH (has to save 3 for Xmas)

I wouldn’t take that either it’s the bare minimum offer

Talkingtomyhouseplants · 27/04/2023 21:20

Mine will go up to 30 in 2 years time as well

sotiredandburntout · 27/04/2023 21:21

33 plus bank hols. 15 years NHS service.

Stixy · 27/04/2023 21:21

Thanks for the feedback everyone, looks like I made the right decision. OH gets 31 so I would have really struggled to take time off with him and have any days for myself too

Wait till the Tories reduce the 28 day statutory minimum!

The elephant in the room that no-one seems to be talking about at the moment.

The 'Brexit Benefit' that thousands of pieces of legislation (employment law, Health and Safety, Environmental and a whole load of other stuff that we will miss if it goes) will evaporate at the end of this year if it's not brought onto the UK statute book, either in it's current form, or revised and passed through parliament, an impossible task.

Would love to know where pp with very generous leave allowances work

Usually in the public sector. for professional roles that are paid significantly less than private sector equivalents.

OhSmitty · 27/04/2023 21:21

I've never had more than stat annual leave. I think I've been really unlucky in my roles.

Optimist2020 · 27/04/2023 21:25

Hey @Stixy I get 34 days plus bank holidays , plus a concessionary bank holiday over Christmas. I also take a flexi day each month. 10 years Local Authority service . Yours sound quite low.

Didtheythough · 27/04/2023 21:26

30 days + bank holidays and up to 13 flexi days a year. As a previous poster says, Im public sector.

SofiaSoFar · 27/04/2023 21:26

Very likely public sector.

Very few organisations that have to make a profit to survive are as profligate with time off.

Smoky1107 · 27/04/2023 21:27

I get 33 xx

Pressuretoohigh · 27/04/2023 21:27

I get 40 days plus BH (have been at organisation for 15 years). I wouldn't move anywhere that was less than 30 with option to buy more. My work life balance is too important!

Okunevo · 27/04/2023 21:27

20 plus bank holidays I think is the minimum, I was on that until I'd been with my company three years. Quite annoying as I had a child starting secondary so could have done with the days then rather than now.

I think people are more productive when they aren't burnt out.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 27/04/2023 21:29

I get 34 days (inclusive of bank holidays) plus long service holidays, plus the chance to buy another week (private sector). DH is in the third sector and has holidays coming out of his ears. 20 days would be far too low for me.

MrsRickAstley · 27/04/2023 21:30

32 + BH's

Tohaveandtohold · 27/04/2023 21:30

I get 28 days plus all bank holidays. People who work during bank holidays get those days added to their annual leave entitlement. You can also carry over 5 days or buy 5 days depending. Also, all full time employees work 35 hours a week and anything over that is overtime. I’ll definitely turn down a job that only offers the just the statutory minimum holiday and entitlements, knowing that on a day to day basis, I’ll have to work at least 30 mins a day more than I do to count as full time.

PinkCast · 27/04/2023 21:31

I think you were right, that's very low. Did they say anything when you told them no?

My sis recently turned down a job for the same reason; 20yrs experience, Director level job & they offered 20 days annual leave - bare legal minimum 😒
If they're stingy like that over annual leave they'll be like that with everything.

DelilahJane · 27/04/2023 21:33

20 closure days which includes Easter and Christmas week some BHs plus 20. Then 24 AL days to pick as we choose.

MoonCharged · 27/04/2023 21:33

I get 33 annual leave days and 12 statutory holidays (or bank holidays). I work for the NHS though so it's quite a good entitlement.

Merryoldgoat · 27/04/2023 21:34

Some sectors are really stingy.

I had 20 plus BH back when I started working 25 years ago. I currently get 25 plus BH and we have the days between Xmas and NY gratis.

SofiaSoFar · 27/04/2023 21:35

Pressuretoohigh · 27/04/2023 21:28

I think people are more productive when they aren't burnt out.

Private sector tends to have more roles where a presence is required, regardless.

For example, if you need 250 people per shift to run your production lines 24/7, the staff having an extra 5 days on top of the 28 minimum means you need ~20% more staff. No way around that.

Same with, for example, retail where you might need, say, 20 staff to be able to run an rota to operate the store's opening hours. You'd need to have 24 instead.

BackOfTheMum5net · 27/04/2023 21:36

27 + BH and I don’t apply for jobs that offer less less than 25.
