To ask the fitters to stop fitting my floor today

So this situation is absolutely ridiculous and I am perfectly aware that my pregnancy hormones are clouding my judgement here and I'm in an incredibly fortunate position, but I could really be doing with some urgent WWYD advice as I am so stressed over this. I am 33 weeks pregnant and have moved into a complete renovation project (not ideal I realise!). The last few weeks since I got the keys I've had to make a lot of quick (expensive) decisions re the design of the house to allow me to get in to it before the baby's born. I'd thought that would be really fun and exciting, but I'm actually really starting to feel pretty stressed over the whole thing and no longer trust my own judgement. I'm becoming quite teary and doubting every decision I make. One of the major outlays has been flooring. It accounts for a significant lump sum of the budget and the fitters started work yesterday and will complete today. As soon as I saw the flooring down it looked completely different from I had thought it would from when I saw it in the shop. I did immediately mention this to the fitters but they assured me it was the correct one. I'm not blaming anyone else here but me, as I do appreciate flooring looks different in natural/ artificial light etc but I immediately hated it. It really looks nothing like I thought it would. They are about halfway done. Should I call the shop and ask them to stop and at least try to salvage some of the unused packets of flooring? (It's herringbone design and there's a LOT of it as the floor space is massive) or should I let them finish and suck it up and not lose thousands of £?) I'm so angry at myself for making the wrong choice and of course I'm not suggesting that I don't pay for the flooring or wiggle out of fitting fees etc. I also realise this is causing me way more distress than it should- my hormones are all over the place.

It’s a beautiful floor and will entirely different when you’ve got furniture and rugs down. At the moment it’s a stark vast visual.

Also, I remember at 39 weeks pregnant rushing out shopping because I suddenly hated some baby clothes I’d bought. There was the tiniest yellow star on the what baby grows and for some reason, I needed to buy other baby grows. Not in the slightest bit rational. I ended up liking the original ones 🤦🏼‍♀️

Lemoncakefortea · 27/04/2023 02:05

Just saw the fitting photos. That’s awful!! The colour is lovely though. Good luck!!

user1492757084 · 27/04/2023 04:02

It's great that you are sorting out the quality of the job.
I like the colour and, from experience, any blonde wood tends to yellow over time with exposure to light.

I don't think those pictures are too bad OP? Presumably, because you left the skirting boards on, that gap is going to be covered by scotia beading? And the piece that has popped out just needs to be wacked back into place?

are you serious? It's appalling workmanship!

sqirrelfriends · 27/04/2023 06:17

Is it engineered or laminate op? If it’s engineered most manufacturers say you can sand down and re-finish a number of times.

I think it looks lovely btw.

Darlingx · 27/04/2023 07:50

This kind of crap goes on all the time anyone seen the series on dbl glazing salesmen of the 80s . It’s assumed being a woman you’ll be gaslit for having first world problems for questioning the fit, shade product and profit margins will be slipped in as they know the upheaval creates confusion if your solo or pregnant . My sister had this with her outdoor waterproof decking completely different to what she ordered. She fought her corner but it took a lot of persistence. I experienced this once with tinted prescription glasses the guy was telling me brown lenses were grey to my face so I got the sample display compared the shades to prove my point only then did they agree to change it.

angela99999 · 27/04/2023 08:03

featheryfancy · 26/04/2023 18:27

There's a brand name and reference number on that sample picture.
Does it match the name and product code on your boxes of flooring?

I like both but see what you mean. The second picture doesn't seem to have the same neutral wood undertone

I think that the shops sometimes change their suppliers so the wood is vaguely the same, they really should also change the sample they show in the shop but they don't bother. They often say things like "the wood grain will vary" but yours has distinct brown streaks whereas the sample was much more uniform - so more probably more expensive for them to buy.

angela99999 · 27/04/2023 08:09

I've just read more of the posts, is it engineered wood or laminate? It it's laminate it really should be identical to the sample as it is printed, so no streaks. Engineered wood will vary.

DistantConstellation · 27/04/2023 09:55

The flooring itself looks fine so don't worry that you've picked the wrong one, but that fitting is awful! How is someone doing that as a job?!

If it helps, we had a large sitting room floorboards stained and didn't really like the end colour- not anyone's fault, I think the samples bits they painted on happened to be on an irregularly coloured bit of the wood. But too late to change it. We'd always intended to put a large rug on and doing so has made all the difference and don't bat an eyelid at the colour now.

Valleymum2 · 27/04/2023 10:10

I think the second one is absolutely gorgeous and gives the natural bleached look you describe you wanted. You could call the shop and ask them what the two options would mean a. Stop refitting, rip up and redo with a different colour b. Carry on and refit but later on rip out and start again if you don’t like it. You might find both options are almost equally as expensive so in the interests of getting the job done you’d be better to stick with a. It sounds like it’s going to be fabulous and will be fantastic to have it all looking new when the baby arrives good luck!

Kate0902900908 · 27/04/2023 10:18

I’ve been here.
allow them to finish. Your due a baby within weeks and you need flooring. Once laid and room finished contact the shop explain the colouring is well off and your not happy. They may offer to re send different colour flooring and you pay for fit.
i think the flooring looks fabulous by the way and not grey at all really quite beautiful X

troppibambini6 · 27/04/2023 10:26

The second one will age so much better than the first one. I have literally exactly the same colour as the first one and it goes orangey over time. I've just payed £6k to have all of downstairs sanded and re stained because of this.

I agree actually. The gaps will be covered by the beading that will go on top. I couldn't get too fussed about the little bits having the same grain and the little loose bits I'd have just assumed would be put right when the beading goes down.

Obviously the other issues are still not ok and I know you have lots of other photos too. I'm not convinced what you've shown inthe photos is an issue though especially as they haven't finished.

(I assume they have t finished!)

But OP didn't want scotia beading, OP wanted the skirting removed for a flush finish. She hasn't got that.

DH and I, with zero experience laminated our entire ground floor. We did install scotia beading and even with that, as complete novices, we have achieved a better finish to the skirting than these 'professional' fitters.

It doesn't matter that it's hidden. It wasn't supposed to be and frankly just demonstrates their complete incompetence as floor fitters. No half decent floorer would be happy with that finish, even covered.

MarvellousMonsters · 27/04/2023 12:09

Ncfgjdo · 25/04/2023 06:05

So picture 1 is what I thought it would be like and 2 is it down- I thought it would be more of a bleached natural tone.

Once it's got a rug or two on it and the light is different it'll look more like the sample. It's not enough of a difference to justify bailing and coughing up for new.

WoofWoofBeachLife · 27/04/2023 13:28

There's so many people on this thread who obviously just accept what they are given in life. The job is a disgrace, and that's just 3 out of 40 pictures! Good on you OP for complaining, you will get your lovely floor laid properly now.

Spottiwatty · 27/04/2023 13:46

Ncfgjdo, that happened to me. I opened a box of flooring night before fitters were due, it was not what I ordered. Like you it was silver not natural. Do you have a description on the invoice/receipt? Does it match the boxes?

I returned mine, lost a small amount because it wasn’t yet fitted.
check receipt, call shop if it’s wrong. If they dispute, call consumers advice or equivalent. Hope it works out and put for yourself and baby first. Floor can be continued later.

Spottiwatty · 27/04/2023 13:57

Again, similar to mine. Ordered light and was given silver. If it’s not the same laminate you ordered, dispute it. There are different grades so different wear quality. Definitely contact consumer service re your rights and call the store.
do you know anyone who is knowledgeable about these things who can check the chosen against supplied? You sound like you need support with this.

IndysMamaRex · 27/04/2023 18:27

Ncfgjdo · 25/04/2023 06:20

Yes but it just says 'Ravello' with the colour as 'Belstaff' and the box seems to be unbranded (it just says silver herringbone)

You can ask for the product code of the sample you saw. Then check the box of one of the unopened ones. If it’s different then they’ve used a “similar” one but not what you asked for. And you can talk to the fitters.

But at 33 weeks pregnant you really don’t need to be getting stressed out. So might just be something you put up with. You can always change in the future. Personally I love your floor looks really nice 👌

GoodChat · 27/04/2023 18:28

The gaps will be covered by the beading that will go on top.

They won't as the fitters are claiming they're finished

Puccini1900 · 27/04/2023 19:21

Tbh, I don't know why you'd want to take off the skirting rather than have scotia beading along the edge of laminate. Removing old skirting often results in large holes in your plaster

Because the beading looks cheap and amateurish

That last one actually looks as if I might have done it, with my famed lack of practical skills. (I am actually banned from cutting the front hedge, for example)
