To ask the fitters to stop fitting my floor today

So this situation is absolutely ridiculous and I am perfectly aware that my pregnancy hormones are clouding my judgement here and I'm in an incredibly fortunate position, but I could really be doing with some urgent WWYD advice as I am so stressed over this. I am 33 weeks pregnant and have moved into a complete renovation project (not ideal I realise!). The last few weeks since I got the keys I've had to make a lot of quick (expensive) decisions re the design of the house to allow me to get in to it before the baby's born. I'd thought that would be really fun and exciting, but I'm actually really starting to feel pretty stressed over the whole thing and no longer trust my own judgement. I'm becoming quite teary and doubting every decision I make. One of the major outlays has been flooring. It accounts for a significant lump sum of the budget and the fitters started work yesterday and will complete today. As soon as I saw the flooring down it looked completely different from I had thought it would from when I saw it in the shop. I did immediately mention this to the fitters but they assured me it was the correct one. I'm not blaming anyone else here but me, as I do appreciate flooring looks different in natural/ artificial light etc but I immediately hated it. It really looks nothing like I thought it would. They are about halfway done. Should I call the shop and ask them to stop and at least try to salvage some of the unused packets of flooring? (It's herringbone design and there's a LOT of it as the floor space is massive) or should I let them finish and suck it up and not lose thousands of £?) I'm so angry at myself for making the wrong choice and of course I'm not suggesting that I don't pay for the flooring or wiggle out of fitting fees etc. I also realise this is causing me way more distress than it should- my hormones are all over the place.

Can you take some pics of the poor work? DH is a floor layer and might have some technical jargon to help you in your complaint.

Ncfgjdo · 26/04/2023 21:08

Quick update! So I sent a very detailed email this morning with accompanying pictures re all my concerns about quality, and the horrendous fitting experience; the store manager sounded quite horrified (and nervous) and had vouched to make things right... we will see! But no money shall be parted with anytime soon! I had an independent flooring fitter out today who was horrified with the work and prepared to do a report to send on to Tapi. In other news, a very good friend of mine who also happens to be a joiner (and who let's face it I should've asked to do it in the first place!!) has agreed to start again for me and do the job properly. I'll keep fighting for money/ resolution from Tapi but I don't have time to wait around at the moment!

Only a few of the many pictures I've been advised by our joiner to send on!

That is appalling 😲

ilovesushi · 26/04/2023 21:27

Do you have anything in writing to confirm what you originally ordered? In our last kitchen the fitter laid down the wrong floor but luckily the colour was so different there was no question about it being wrong. It was the same brand and style but different colour code. He was really good about taking it up again and getting it changed. Good luck sorting it! On the plus side both the one you wanted and the one you have look nice!

pilates · 26/04/2023 21:27

Sorry you have this to deal with on top of being heavily pregnant

ilovesushi · 26/04/2023 21:27

Oh no! Just seen your recent pictures!

BeetyAxe · 26/04/2023 21:29

Flip that’s shocking looking! Any word from Tapi today?

Silentbarking · 26/04/2023 21:38

Don’t forget to let them know you’ll be putting up thoroughly honest reviews on every platform OP.

LightReader · 26/04/2023 21:54

Check your lighting. We had a similar issue and it turned out we hand cool white led bulbs rather than warm white. Made a big difference and we nearly sent it back.

Puccini1900 · 26/04/2023 22:05

I don't think those pictures are too bad OP? Presumably, because you left the skirting boards on, that gap is going to be covered by scotia beading? And the piece that has popped out just needs to be wacked back into place?

You're joking? It's shiter than shit.

That's 3 of 40 but I won't bombard you all with the rest! They were meant to remove the skirting but obviously couldn't be bothered.

I think your three year old would have done a better job at fitting that. I'd request it's all taken up and removed and you're refunded.

whynotwhatknot · 26/04/2023 22:18

thats horrendous why should you pay for that and they havent even finished

Cherryblossoms85 · 26/04/2023 22:18

It's shocking. Maybe your mistake about the colour but the fitting is terrible.

This! I had parquet wood put down 2 years ago and put a door mat over a section where the door is. Lift the door mat up occasionally to hoover under it and the ‘unexposed’ wood is a lot greyer / duller than the wood that has developed over 2 years with sunlight etc.

I would say @Ncfgjdo the shop sample was exposed to daylight for a period so looks more yellow whereas the stuff new in the boxes will lighten over time.

Lenor · 26/04/2023 22:47

Omg OP! Just read this entire thread thinking goodness me, this looks exactly like the laminate flooring I’ve just had installed…

It’s the same flooring! Mines from factory direct flooring and was £21pm. Exact same kronotex box, same shade. So, tapi just sell kronotex flooring and remarket it and slap £20 on the price per metre? I feel like I’m being naive but I’m shocked!

Lenor · 26/04/2023 22:55

Also OP, make sure they fix this. These four pieces have been installed incorrectly. The grain is facing the wrong way. For herringbone it should be running in the opposite direction to the grain of the piece next to it. The pieces are very clearly labelled A and B but they obviously decided they’d rather scrimp and reuse leftovers.

The fitting is awful but the colour difference could easily be the colour difference between your home lighting and the showroom lighting. Do you have "warm" lights or "cool". Kelvin is the colour temp measurement of lights. See what K light blubs you have a swap for a warmer colour.

Charlize43 · 26/04/2023 22:57

Are they putting some sort of beading? Normally those cut edges would be hidden under the skirting...

Maybe look at changing all your lighting to a warmer tone?

I'm the same the colour. Occasionally I'll veer from a neutral off white tone and paint a room in colour - the last one I did was in a sage hue and I hated it and ended painting it back a couple of weeks later.

Thank you! That is really helpful! Grin

So picture 1 is what I thought it would be like and 2 is it down- I thought it would be more of a bleached natural tone.

it's the right one. Maybe the shop had a warm light.

Anskl · 27/04/2023 00:25

As others have said, when you Google Ravello Belsafff it looks exactly the same as the flooring laid in your kitchen. However, your first photo looks very different. Perhaps the sample you originally saw was labelled incorrectly?

pollymere · 27/04/2023 00:44

I'd check with the original store and compare your photos. Either the fitters have used a cheaper product or the original sample had been bleached by the store lights. They are definitely not the same colour x
