To ask the fitters to stop fitting my floor today

So this situation is absolutely ridiculous and I am perfectly aware that my pregnancy hormones are clouding my judgement here and I'm in an incredibly fortunate position, but I could really be doing with some urgent WWYD advice as I am so stressed over this. I am 33 weeks pregnant and have moved into a complete renovation project (not ideal I realise!). The last few weeks since I got the keys I've had to make a lot of quick (expensive) decisions re the design of the house to allow me to get in to it before the baby's born. I'd thought that would be really fun and exciting, but I'm actually really starting to feel pretty stressed over the whole thing and no longer trust my own judgement. I'm becoming quite teary and doubting every decision I make. One of the major outlays has been flooring. It accounts for a significant lump sum of the budget and the fitters started work yesterday and will complete today. As soon as I saw the flooring down it looked completely different from I had thought it would from when I saw it in the shop. I did immediately mention this to the fitters but they assured me it was the correct one. I'm not blaming anyone else here but me, as I do appreciate flooring looks different in natural/ artificial light etc but I immediately hated it. It really looks nothing like I thought it would. They are about halfway done. Should I call the shop and ask them to stop and at least try to salvage some of the unused packets of flooring? (It's herringbone design and there's a LOT of it as the floor space is massive) or should I let them finish and suck it up and not lose thousands of £?) I'm so angry at myself for making the wrong choice and of course I'm not suggesting that I don't pay for the flooring or wiggle out of fitting fees etc. I also realise this is causing me way more distress than it should- my hormones are all over the place.

Wood always changes colour in the light, even if you put one of the UV filtering seals on it, though I'm guessing that this is presealed. I'd just leave it and live with the colour, you'll hoefully forget that it isn't quite what you expected.
The fitting is another matter though - did you get the fitting done by the shop or by somebody you found yourself? The fact that they've not got enough wood is worrying, presumably they measured and would normally allow 10% or so for wastage. So either they've wasted more or they have charged you for more wood than they have laid. They've got to sort this out.

Elaina87 · 26/04/2023 17:57

If you can afford to pay for what's already down and then also new flooring them definitely tell them to stop and send the rest back. I had a floor i didn't like for years and it did get to me! It changes the whole feel of the room/house. If you can't afford to change it then you will as you say have to suck it up and maybe change it again a few years.

me109f · 26/04/2023 17:59

Tell the shop. Check what was really specified. Look at it so far, if you really hate it ask the shop what it would take to respecify and redo.

If it annoys you now you may hate it forever. Don't be swayed by other opinions 'cos it is your decision and your home.

If you need to take them to Trading Standards, use the term 'Not Fit for Purpose'
which is the key one for rejecting products.
"Under the Consumer Rights Act you have a legal right to reject goods that are of unsatisfactory quality, unfit for purpose or not as described, and get a full refund - as long as you do this quickly."

But you're still going to left with a floor that's not finished properly and even if you get the money back you'll have to pay someone to take it up. Better to get the shop to sort it out properly.

Jumbojade · 26/04/2023 18:07

Don’t pay the fitters. If you do, you will never see them again and will be left with this mess. I feel so awful for you, having all these issues when you are 33 week’s pregnant, is the last thing you need.

Strawberrydelight78 · 26/04/2023 18:08

I actually like the grey I have had a neutral beach colour and hated it when it was down. It showed every little mark.

OhMerseyMe · 26/04/2023 18:09

Based on the picture, that looks like somebody messed up. I know that wood can have different tones, but those are nothing alike. Even if it is a different run, it should be more similar than that.
I would stop them and get in touch with the person who you ordered it from ASAP to ensure that they sent you the correct material.

Relaxd · 26/04/2023 18:14

I think you’re right to check. We had similar issue and they brought completely different flooring. Thankfully it was very obvious, where yours could possibly just be down to lighting and being in a south v west facing room etc. I’d still check. I suspect the person picking it up looked at it and thought it looked the same but didn’t properly check. That said, I really like the look of what you’ve ended up with too and it’s worth putting down some soft furnishings etc against it in case it looks great and it is worth sticking with it.

Gh12345 · 26/04/2023 18:16

I think it’s probably just the lighting that’s making them look more grey. For the sake of your baby nearly being here - I’d just get on with it. X

@Roselilly36 yes the fitting company have been incredibly intimidating! They even insisted that they wouldn't be leaving the property until they received payment when I was still at work and the the work was incomplete! I can assure you that no money will be leaving my account until the issues are sorted.

This is terrible OP! We’ve used Tapi 3x and the first time was awful!!! Other 2 times underwhelming but fine (carpet whereas first lot was hardwood and beading which was broken before they even left!). Thing is Tapi have an absolute monopoly here and there’s no one really else to use other than ££££! I feel your pain. And that’s even without antagonistic fitters!

CountryMouse22 · 26/04/2023 18:26

You could always have it stained (if it's stainable) at a later date.

featheryfancy · 26/04/2023 18:27

There's a brand name and reference number on that sample picture.
Does it match the name and product code on your boxes of flooring?

I like both but see what you mean. The second picture doesn't seem to have the same neutral wood undertone

SecretSwirrel · 26/04/2023 18:39

Honestly OP I think the one that’s going down now is the right choice.
My flooring is more like the first picture and a regret it as it’s v bland and looks quite officey. The second one is much more befitting of a family home.
TBH I think it’s the hormones etc making you doubt yourself. I do the same 🙈

Doesn't mean the furniture will look good though.

Caelan2018 · 26/04/2023 18:42

Absolutely love the floor you have over what you thought it was going to look like it will go with everything

weirdoboelady · 26/04/2023 19:01

Can we have pictures of their poor fitting, pretty please? (Asked just out of nosiness, I confess, but it might help us to advise you further on how to fight the bastards) x

noimaginationforausername · 26/04/2023 19:30

I fucking hate Tapi and will never use them again! They did a shit job of fitting the carpet on out stairs, broke the corner of my flooring and chipped all of the paint on the newly painted banister. I complained and they basically said the fitters told them I was lying and that I should have waited a minimum of 6 weeks after painting to “let the paint dry”. Awful company and the fitters they use are even worse.

padsi1975 · 26/04/2023 19:37

I do not like grey, I don't think your floor looks grey. It's lovely! I can't see much of a difference between the two pics. I vote that you leave it, I bet it will turn out fine.

meercat23 · 26/04/2023 19:51

Ncfgjdo · 25/04/2023 21:26

To be perfectly honest I'd be reluctant to let the fitters back in to do more work given the damage they've caused. Also just noticed they've broken one of my kitchen kickboards and not put any back on! Incase you haven't worked it out by now- don't use Tapi!! 🤣

I was going to say thus earlier but thought maybe my experience was just my experience. They supplied and laid vinyl flooring in our cloakroom. Simple little job you would think. The flooring they supplied was much thinner than the sample, the fitting was awful and the flooring buckled within weeks whereasethe previous flooring lasted for ten years. Tapi were the cheapest but I wont be using them again.

AngeBibster · 26/04/2023 20:06

I’ve just googled the flooring you’ve ordered and the photo on the website looks similar to the one that’s down. I like it I think the first one looks too yellow.

To ask the fitters to stop fitting my floor today
AmIEnough · 26/04/2023 20:11

I actually think it looks absolutely lovely! Once the rest of the decor is done I think you’ll get used to it. Don’t cause yourself more stress. I wish you all the luck in the world xx

Woodywoodpeckerharrison · 26/04/2023 20:50

I think keep going. I got some new flooring a few weeks back. My initial reaction was that it just didn't look like the sample (but it was 100% the same flooring). It took me about a week until I felt good about it. For about a week I stared at it think I don't love this. Then it grew on me.

Whalesong · 26/04/2023 20:56

Ncfgjdo · 25/04/2023 06:05

So picture 1 is what I thought it would be like and 2 is it down- I thought it would be more of a bleached natural tone.

I think that's really lovely, very sophisticated! But then I love greys. I'd use some pops of colour like a rug, cushions, curtains etc in various shades of purple. I think it will look great!

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 26/04/2023 20:56

Don’t pay until completion to your satisfaction

I agree - much prefer the second one!
