To ask the fitters to stop fitting my floor today

So this situation is absolutely ridiculous and I am perfectly aware that my pregnancy hormones are clouding my judgement here and I'm in an incredibly fortunate position, but I could really be doing with some urgent WWYD advice as I am so stressed over this. I am 33 weeks pregnant and have moved into a complete renovation project (not ideal I realise!). The last few weeks since I got the keys I've had to make a lot of quick (expensive) decisions re the design of the house to allow me to get in to it before the baby's born. I'd thought that would be really fun and exciting, but I'm actually really starting to feel pretty stressed over the whole thing and no longer trust my own judgement. I'm becoming quite teary and doubting every decision I make. One of the major outlays has been flooring. It accounts for a significant lump sum of the budget and the fitters started work yesterday and will complete today. As soon as I saw the flooring down it looked completely different from I had thought it would from when I saw it in the shop. I did immediately mention this to the fitters but they assured me it was the correct one. I'm not blaming anyone else here but me, as I do appreciate flooring looks different in natural/ artificial light etc but I immediately hated it. It really looks nothing like I thought it would. They are about halfway done. Should I call the shop and ask them to stop and at least try to salvage some of the unused packets of flooring? (It's herringbone design and there's a LOT of it as the floor space is massive) or should I let them finish and suck it up and not lose thousands of £?) I'm so angry at myself for making the wrong choice and of course I'm not suggesting that I don't pay for the flooring or wiggle out of fitting fees etc. I also realise this is causing me way more distress than it should- my hormones are all over the place.

Good luck at the shop. I did a major extension and couldn't imagine being pg too at the sane time

DrPrunesquallor · 25/04/2023 12:38

I’d check the specification
Grey is going out of fashion, could they have given you something different to get rid of old stock.?
Lots of people don’t make a fuss so maybe they think they will get away with it.
Pop to the shop and buy a sample and compare it.
Before they finish today.

Hope you didn’t pay for fitting in advance

PlantKi1ler · 25/04/2023 12:39

The same happened to me. I picked a flooring that looked quite neutral but it was laid it looked really grey. I don't love it but it'll have to do for now because we couldn't afford to have it all done again. I actually think yours looks lovely, I prefer it to what I've got.

Colour aside, I would actually have someone else go into the shop to pretend to be choosing flooring and ask what the difference between the Kronos and Ravello are. If they're told the price differential is due to a difference in quality, I think you have a good case that you have been mis-sold (aka ripped off).

Not a bad idea there...just to cover your bases and all that.

So picture 1 is what I thought it would be like and 2 is it down- I thought it would be more of a bleached natural tone.

I like it! It's lovely, I'd actually like this in our house but I did the same thing as you with our flooring. I bought a house heavily pregnant and it turned out it needed gutting. I picked flooring for the entire downstairs and had it fitted in the mad rush to get in before the baby arrived (we didn't manage to get in before in the end!). I hated the flooring from the word go once down but I put up with it for 2 years, then I talked my husband into having it redone. I do like the new floor (it went from a dark wood effect laminate which was £££ to a light wood effect also £££ 😬). We had it done 4 years ago and now I'm eyeing herringbone up, my husband said "no." 🤣. I'd let them finish and see how you go, you might actually grow to like it and you want to get in your house besides.

I'd double check the flooring is the correct one though just in case it is a mistake, it does look slightly different to the sample (though I prefer what you have down vs your sample).

I've just found this on the Tapi website. It appears they change the name of all their products!

This will be what has happened in OP’s case. Unfortunately they can do this legally it seems which is no consolation when you find the same product under a different name cheaper. I found a similar situation with a kitchen worktop which was more expensive and had a different name through the kitchen supplier than the original manufacturer.

I hope the OP finds a resolution she is happy with.

Thank you everyone for your comments- I have spoken to the store manager- I am going in to store to check the samples against what has been provided in my order- then at least I can make a more informed decision!

I was going to suggest this, take that sample around to your house and compare to what is down. A flooring shop near us lets you take the sample tiles home to see it in the room you are having done before ordering. Taking that sample tile home will remove the potential "well the lighting is different" thing to make the floor look different. You'll know if it's the same.

Brilliant idea. And as I have a crap memory, I would have a mobile phone in my pocket with Voice Recorder turned on, so that I would have no risk of forgetting exactly what they said. (I don't think this is strictly legal, and the recording probably couldn't be used in a court of law, but I daresay they are filming you while you're in their shop anyway, so I never have any compunction about this.

Deadringer · 25/04/2023 13:00

I didn't read the full thread op but I googled Ravello belstaff and this image came up, which looks exactly like what you got. Apologies if someone posted already and this is unhelpful.

Babyiwantabump · 25/04/2023 13:06

I have just asked an expert ( my DH he is a flooring shop manager 🤣) and he says that kronotex is a budget brand and that the planks in the picture compared to the sample appear different sizes

Babyiwantabump · 25/04/2023 13:09

And you have definitely not been given what you ordered

we recently had kitchen flooring fitted and the supplier showed us a range of samples from the same range to emphasise the colour difference within the planks. We also took one home with us and often they looked very different in our lighting at home than the shop artificial lighting.

It is the same it's just the lighting. It's beautiful, this is your hormones talking. Let them lay it it's fabulous.

KittytheHare · 25/04/2023 13:25

I'm ridiculously overinvested in this thread now, and truly hope you get the outcome you want Op.

BellePeppa · 25/04/2023 13:29

Is it possible to have the flooring stained?

I have that exact same flooring! I was expecting it to be warmer in tone, and it's definitely greyer than I wanted it to be, but now that my furniture is in, it's a lot warmer than it looked initially .

I think it looks really lovely To nice your furniture is on it. It'll shade It and be a little darker anyway

2bazookas · 25/04/2023 14:18

If they are fitting what you ordered, you haven't got a leg to stand on.

IF its possible what they are fitting is NOT what you ordered, then let them finish fitting thenraise it with the shop.

I had exactly that happen (and \I was also preg btw). We'd moved and were having an entire (new) home recarpeted. The one he'd brought for the sitting room was not the colour I ordered. I had a copy of my order; fitter agreed that this was not the right carpet but warned me they#d have to re-order the correct carpet, would take 6 weeks. His advice was to have the wrong one fitted (at their expense) as a comfortable clean stopgap. A couple of months later he came back with the correct carpet. removed the wrong one and took it away. New carpet fitted., all happy. The company stood the loss.

Silentbarking · 25/04/2023 14:28

They definitely look grey OP. Hope they’ve got it wrong and you can sort it out.

dwightschrutebeets · 25/04/2023 14:33

I absolutely love the flooring! Good luck I hope you get it sorted

I guess this is what is meant by the term 1st world problems?

Were you never taught if you can't say anything nice to not say anything at all?
Op has every right to ask for advice or opinions on any problem. As you have every right to not be an arse.

Hairpinleg · 25/04/2023 14:50

I've known it to happen that a flooring company fits the wrong floor if it comes in different colourways such as natural, dark, silver etc so you might be right. It's very stressful when fitters are telling you that you're imaging things. Hopefully you figure it out and are happy with the result.

CantHaveTooMuchChocolate · 25/04/2023 14:53

I’ve done a quick bit of research. So your receipt states Ravello Bellstaff, which as another pp has said may now be the driftwood @ 39.99 per sq m.

The boxes in your picture you posted show that they’re laying Kronotex flooring, which I’d guess is this (or similar from the range) -

https://www.bestatflooring.co.uk/p/kronotex-herringbone-laminate-silver-oak-d3773/?_its=JTdCJTIydmlkJTIyJTNBJTIyNDQyYWY5YWMtYzEzZC00MjZiLWI2MjktNDIxNTkzYWY2MWRjJTIyJTJDJTIyc3RhdGUlMjIlM0ElMjJybHR%2BMTY4MjQzMDIyN35sYW5kfjJfOTc5OV9zZW9fNTJlZmVlYTUwYzQ3ODIyZmNmYTlmNGEwNjM2ZDkxYjYlMjIlN0Q%3D

This is 19.99 per sq M, so what you’ve been supplied looks to me to be roughly half the price of what you ordered, as well as obviously not being what you’d ordered.

I’d point this out to the shop asap, they should sort this out. Good luck!
