To ask the fitters to stop fitting my floor today

So this situation is absolutely ridiculous and I am perfectly aware that my pregnancy hormones are clouding my judgement here and I'm in an incredibly fortunate position, but I could really be doing with some urgent WWYD advice as I am so stressed over this. I am 33 weeks pregnant and have moved into a complete renovation project (not ideal I realise!). The last few weeks since I got the keys I've had to make a lot of quick (expensive) decisions re the design of the house to allow me to get in to it before the baby's born. I'd thought that would be really fun and exciting, but I'm actually really starting to feel pretty stressed over the whole thing and no longer trust my own judgement. I'm becoming quite teary and doubting every decision I make. One of the major outlays has been flooring. It accounts for a significant lump sum of the budget and the fitters started work yesterday and will complete today. As soon as I saw the flooring down it looked completely different from I had thought it would from when I saw it in the shop. I did immediately mention this to the fitters but they assured me it was the correct one. I'm not blaming anyone else here but me, as I do appreciate flooring looks different in natural/ artificial light etc but I immediately hated it. It really looks nothing like I thought it would. They are about halfway done. Should I call the shop and ask them to stop and at least try to salvage some of the unused packets of flooring? (It's herringbone design and there's a LOT of it as the floor space is massive) or should I let them finish and suck it up and not lose thousands of £?) I'm so angry at myself for making the wrong choice and of course I'm not suggesting that I don't pay for the flooring or wiggle out of fitting fees etc. I also realise this is causing me way more distress than it should- my hormones are all over the place.

How did you get on?

Ncfgjdo · 25/04/2023 15:22

So I've just been in to the store with my planks of off cuts (how embarrassing!) and it does in fact seem to match the one in the store. I visited a different store originally and the sample board today did look ashier. I'm a bit miffed to say the least about the pricing element of it, but that's my fault I suppose for not doing my research properly. I should say the people in the store were pleasant enough about it all, they're only selling what's given to them at the end of the day. I think I'm just going to have to see how I feel about it in a few weeks once furniture is in and either pay out for something else or try to let it grow on me!! All I know right now is that I need to try and relax a bit over it else I'm at risk of going into early labour over flooring!! Grin

At least you know you're not being fobbed off!

Silentbarking · 25/04/2023 15:25

Sorry to read that OP. Would it help to look for a lovely rug to help blend the colour?

Ncfgjdo · 25/04/2023 15:31

My intention was to put down a massive rug anyway for a bit of warmth in the living room, so will see how it all looks when together- perhaps I won't hate it so much then and can finally stop giving myself such a hard time over these sorts of things! There's always the option of replacing it I suppose if I really can't live with it (total waste of cash though!)

I’d honestly suggest living with it whilst you have a small child and if you want to upgrade it later wait until it’s not going to be covered in paint, playdoh and bodily fluids. Toddlers are hard on floors! I know that feels like ages away but before you know it there will be dinosaur stamps and stickers on everything and it’s less painful if you don’t like the floor!

We desperately need new carpets but we have a 3.5 year old and about to get new kittens so it’s being delayed again!

silkpashmina · 25/04/2023 15:34

@Ncfgjdo So was it the Kronotex flooring you had ordered then and not Ravello?

Ncfgjdo · 25/04/2023 15:35

@AlltheFs yes we also have a wild 3 year old in the mix who is desperate to get into her new house so having to take that into account too! Oh and she got roller skates for Christmas....

No it was Ravello- Ravello isn't a brand it's just the store name for the style/colour

I’m quite a fuss pot over things like this and I really don’t think the colours look that different. They do a bit, but that’s down to lighting and all the other factors. It’s going to look different in a flooring showroom with tons of lighting than it will in a empty house. I think in the end you’ll feel fine about it. Getting your furniture and own lighting, will make it look different again. It looks lighter next to the cream carpet samples, so get a big cream rug. When babba is here, you’ll have so much on, you’ll look back and laugh how stressed you were about the flooring.

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 25/04/2023 15:39

I've had experience in ordering furnishing where the colour looked nothing (in my home) as it did in the store. A freakout upon delivery, but then it grows upon one. I think if you put down a nice large rug, you'll be fine.

WhyOhWine · 25/04/2023 15:58

We did a refurbishment a couple of years ago and the flooring in one room is much lighter than i expected (and i did not particularly like it). Getting the furniture in and rug down definitely helped and it has grown on me. I would still prefer it to be darker, but not enough to replace it.

Housenoob · 25/04/2023 16:02

I hate the whole cold grey toned look but I think your flooring looks lovely. Choosing flooring is so hard isn't it!

I’ve done a quick bit of research. So your receipt states Ravello Bellstaff, which as another pp has said may now be the driftwood @ 39.99 per sq m.

The boxes in your picture you posted show that they’re laying Kronotex flooring, which I’d guess is this (or similar from the range) -

https://www.bestatflooring.co.uk/p/kronotex-herringbone-laminate-silver-oak-d3773/?_its=JTdCJTIydmlkJTIyJTNBJTIyNDQyYWY5YWMtYzEzZC00MjZiLWI2MjktNDIxNTkzYWY2MWRjJTIyJTJDJTIyc3RhdGUlMjIlM0ElMjJybHR%2BMTY4MjQzMDIyN35sYW5kfjJfOTc5OV9zZW9fNTJlZmVlYTUwYzQ3ODIyZmNmYTlmNGEwNjM2ZDkxYjYlMjIlN0Q%3D

This is 19.99 per sq M, so what you’ve been supplied looks to me to be roughly half the price of what you ordered, as well as obviously not being what you’d ordered.

I’d point this out to the shop asap, they should sort this out. Good luck!

Omg OP you've been mugged off!!

Hope you get it sorted ASAP on this basis.

Kennykenkencat · 25/04/2023 16:23

I have done the same thing. It’s a lesson learned and what ever colour I pick I always get samples of anything and everything to see what it will look like in the room it is going in.

The natural light, depending on which way the window is facing can alter colours to produce a warmer or colder / lighter or darker hue.

Even different colour altogether (or that could be because I am colour blind)

Justgorgeous · 25/04/2023 16:25

What you have is very on trend. Don’t change it unless you really hate it !!

ApolloandDaphne · 25/04/2023 16:53

The thing is that type of flooring always looks different when it it a whole floor seen in different light. I didn't think I was keen on our oak herring bone floor as it was being laid as it seemed different to the sample. I absolutely knew it was the correct stuff they bought. I love it now the decorating is down and my furniture and rug are in place. Also it looks different from different and at different times of the day. I'm sure you will get used to it over time.

mrsbyers · 25/04/2023 16:54

The ravello belstaff is described as brown toned , they’ve supplied a much cheaper make of flooring and grey toned - I wouldn’t be happy either

ApolloandDaphne · 25/04/2023 17:14

I've put a picture of Ravello Belstaff on a kitchen floor and put it alongside the picture OP sent of the floor as it looks in her house. They look identical to me.

OliveWah · 25/04/2023 17:32

If, after a few weeks of living with it you're still not happy, is there any way of getting a varnish put over it in a colour closer to the one you were hoping for? I have no idea if this is an option, but was just what sprang to mind.

Tiredalwaystired · 25/04/2023 17:34

Maybe changing the lighting in that room would help it look better? Might be a lot cheaper than replacing the floor…

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 25/04/2023 17:48

I'll be interested to hear what the shop says about the brands/costs.

The idea of changing the lighting is good, too.

Comefromaway · 25/04/2023 18:03

Ravello is not a brand. It’s the name that Tapi give to Kronotex

It’s a bit like I’ve got some furniture made by a company called Bentley Designs.

one design the real name is Montreaux

but Arighi Bianchi sell it as Dieppe & Furniture Village call it Annecy.

it’s the exact same table.

user1473878824 · 25/04/2023 18:13

@Ncfgjdo As it is the same I feel less wary of saying it looks lovely!
