Really not enjoying my job at the moment, and wasting quite a bit of time thinking about how im not enjoying it. If you really like your job on the whole what is it you do?

I teach English as a foreign language. Don't live in the UK so it's a bit niche.
I'm also in a good position as I have a full time permanent job in local government.
I don't recommend it as jobs like mine are rare and it's generally a sector where you're on freelance, badly paid contacts.
But I get paid to meet and help people by basically just being myself and knowing about grammar and having experience in teaching.
It's interesting, rewarding, useful and very humane.
It's generally undervalued (and therefore underpaid) but hugely skilled and therefore a sector in which you get to work with really smart and interesting people. And every day is different.

1:1 teaching assistant for an amazing little girl who has taught me so much about the world and how to live life in all its fullness ( part of our school vision from John10:10) in a brilliant CofE primary school.
Although as some as you know I’m currently going through the discernment process with the Church of England to see if I will be accepted to start training to become an ordained priest.

Amazing 😊❤️

Work in a theatre. I love it

Miniature8 · 22/04/2023 21:55

@Tarantullah I would also be grateful if you could send me the information thanks!

DancingFlamingo · 22/04/2023 21:57

Best advice I had was to think about what you enjoyed at school when you were young - before exams put the pressure on. I loved maths! I'm now an accountant and although I don't 'love' it, i really really like it - solving problems and helping people understand something quite complex and boring to most people. Plus the work/life balance is about right, and it's got good financial security.

My hobbies are what i love - ballet, dress-making - but i would never want to make them my job with the pressure that adds.

Justgorgeous · 22/04/2023 21:58

@Tarantullah Hi, if you have time I would be really grateful to have the info too.

Mustardfan · 22/04/2023 21:58

I work with social workers that request (new) clothing and food for children in our school system. I fill the orders and I love it; however it’s part time and I make so little money I could never live on it.

ISeeTheLight · 22/04/2023 22:00

Online advertising, agency side. Independent agency, very international (both clients and colleagues). Fast paced but very interesting and challenging in a good way. I also oversee a team of 15 people so my job is quite varied. I really enjoy it.

I work in cyber security, it's probably not that interesting to a lot of people but I enjoy it and I figure it's a secure career and pretty future proofed!

I retrained though after having DC, I was a teacher previously and although I loved working with children I hated all of the other crap. I am looking into volunteering at one of the local schools to run an after school coding club, they seem very interested especially I suppose as I am supplying the equipment too! Perhaps it'll combine both of my passions, hoping it doesn't get halted by red tape and whatever else.

May I ask how you trained?

demeego · 22/04/2023 22:08

Veterinary care assistant, soon to be training as a veterinary nurse. Been waiting a long time to finally do this as a job and love it now I’m finally doing it.

Thepeopleversuswork · 22/04/2023 22:08

Public relations. Job is very intellectually (and financially) rewarding and good fun so I really enjoy it. I feel very guilty about doing something with no social purpose and like a failure for having taken the corporate shilling though. Will never be totally at peace with the way I make a living and would like to do something which actually helps people but I have a lot of outgoings. There are worse ways to make a living though.

HundredMilesAnHour · 22/04/2023 22:09

I'm a Director in Financial Services. It's stressful, fast-paced, political and exhausting but I love it. I've just been selected to work on something which is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, the kind of work that people in my role dream of. The pressure will be intense (if we fail at this, the impact on the financial markets will be felt across the world) but being able to be part of this and working alongside some of the best of the best is just the most amazing and exciting opportunity.

Gherkingreen · 22/04/2023 22:12

Itshandled · 22/04/2023 22:26

@Tarantullah I’d be interested to know more about the route you took as well please.

girlfriend44 · 22/04/2023 22:29

I have a side hustle that I'm building which I get paid for.

I don't want to say what it is as maybe outing.
Lots of people love doing it it's nothing to do with sex though.
Very enjoyable.

Alaimo · 22/04/2023 22:39

I'm a university lecturer (not in the UK). After years of poor pay (PhD) and insecure contracts (post doc) I now absolutely love my job and the lifestyle it allows me to have. It's maybe not much by mumsnet standards, but the £45k I earn is enough for me and I know there's scope for futher progression.

There are stressful and high-pressure times but the work is varied and I love both my research and the teaching I do. I'm currently supervising dissertations and it's lovely to see students push themselves, learn new skills and find pride in their work.

And sometimes I get invited to go to interesting places (Berlin, Paris) to give invited talks. As someone who grew up in a family where no-one had ever been to university or has a high flying job I sometimes still can't believe someone would pay me to go to Paris.
