Upholsterer. Retrained at 50. Best thing I’ve ever done.

I have always been interested in learning how to reupholster. How did you get into it? Did you do a training course?

HenryCavillsPerfectTeeth · 22/04/2023 19:21

IT application support technician in public sector procurement. Absolutely love it.

Lemonademoney · 22/04/2023 19:21

i work in a school in a non teaching role. I have a lovely manager and it’s just down the road. The pay isn’t great but I don’t pay any childcare so it probably balances out.

youspinmerightround22 · 22/04/2023 19:23

Drugs counsellor. Very challenging but very rewarding.

hereiamagainn · 22/04/2023 19:23

What sort of non-teaching roles are there in schools, other than TA / admin / midday supervisor?

Thomasthe · 22/04/2023 19:24

I work in a medical library. Helping clinical staff/social workers etc. I’m based in the physical library but it’s mostly admin. Nice work/life balance, vast majority of the users are lovely. Not great pay, but low stress and I feel like if I can make their day even the slightest bit easier by finding resources for them then I’m happy with that 😊

soupmaker · 22/04/2023 19:24

Trade union official. Absolutely love it. It can be very stressful but the job satisfaction makes up for it.

I run my own company in the arts - wear both creative and business hats. Love it to the point of obsession and feel very lucky every day.

Im in marketing/admin/PR which I enjoy on the whole but really don’t want to be involved in the events side anymore and unfortunately my role is becoming more and more that! I’m not enjoying it at all!

Probably a tonne of transferable skills though and I'm sure you have lots of contacts if you wanted to network and see what else is out there. What bits do you enjoy?

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 22/04/2023 19:44

I run my own dog walking business.

Executive Assistant to a Director in Financial Services. I’ve only been in role a few weeks but I’ve never before worked for a team that have made me feel so welcome nor had a role with so much variety, scope for learning and empowerment. It’s a real pleasure to work for/with the team.

Princesspuppy · 22/04/2023 20:05

A part time secondary teacher. I know teachers are leaving in their droves, but I work in a small school with a great, supportive team and I genuinely would do it for much less money. I absolutely love it and look forward to Monday mornings.

I never thought I would get to say that!

I work in cyber security, it's probably not that interesting to a lot of people but I enjoy it and I figure it's a secure career and pretty future proofed!

I retrained though after having DC, I was a teacher previously and although I loved working with children I hated all of the other crap. I am looking into volunteering at one of the local schools to run an after school coding club, they seem very interested especially I suppose as I am supplying the equipment too! Perhaps it'll combine both of my passions, hoping it doesn't get halted by red tape and whatever else.

Curious to know how intensive/costly the training was @Tarantullah. Did you have to do a degree and did you know how to code beforehand?

DRS1970 · 22/04/2023 20:10

I am retired and adore it.

Business manager is one (I know one in a primary school with this title)

Shell23 · 22/04/2023 20:26

I get to have a nosey into other people's properties and it's honestly like getting a sneak peak into a pocket of someone else's world.

Great fun

I'll PM you more info as to not clog up the thread, but no you don't need to necessarily know much beforehand (although it's handy to have an aptitude for logical thinking etc), there are funded courses and a fair number of employers now will take you on and fund your degree or training as you work for a higher salary than a traditional apprentiship. I have a degree now but many people I work with don't.

Oooh so interesting. I was reading recently there is a real lack of upholsters at the moment and it appeals to me.
Is it very physical (ie needs manual strength)? How long did it take to train? Where do you do your training?
