Someone's taken credit for anonymous treat!

Quick silly one but not sure what to do.

Friend has had a hard time so I've sent them a cream tea type surprise treat. Left the card anonymous but she finds it difficult to receive without reciprocating and I wanted her to have something just for her with no strings, to cheer her up.

She posts it on social media, another Friend (I don't know) comments, saying enjoy, glad you like, you deserve it type thing

My friend says ahhhh was it you, youre amazing

Other friend says wink wink it's anonymous so I guess you'll never know

Now, to me there alluding it was then. Taking all the bloody credit. I know I didn't send it for credit or even thanks but I'm a little pissed off!

To avoid the whole 'which goes on first' debate - I split the scone in 2 then do one half jam first and the other cream first 😁

Devon clotted cream is thicker than Cornish clotted cream. So Devon clotted cream can be sculpted to hold the jam and Cornish is like double cream so the jam would slide off.
to summarise Devon does better clotted cream and therefore better cream teas.

Yup. you make a little well for the jam. I don't understand why you would have runny cream with a scone?

Mummyratbag · 22/04/2023 16:04

and you put cream on top in the same way you put cream/custard/ice cream on top of a dessert not under it!

My3dahliasarebloominlovely · 22/04/2023 16:05

Oooh! Now I have a yen for cream tea with rhubarb and ginger jam.....don't knock it until you try it!

Another Lancashire vote here - I always think when the Devon gang are saying the cream is like the butter so put it first that it’s weird you want to put ‘butter’ on top of the butter.

Butter then jam then cream.

tableanadchairs · 22/04/2023 16:06

just my scones mixed uo today 😳
butter and jam on a cheese scone 🙄

OnlyFannys · 22/04/2023 16:12

I go cream first so I can spread it about a bit, i dont see how you could get a good distribution if jam goes first. I am also in Yorkshire btw so very interested in where the cream tea is from

That's when you put it on top of something solid and less sweet! So it stays in place and you get the sweeter flavour on top.

Jam is runnier and sweeter than cream, so it goes on top. Victoria sponges always have the cream on the bottom cake.

Team DEVON! 💪🏻

In Devon, the scones are split in two and topped with cream followed by jam. In Cornwall, the split scones are topped with jam and then cream.

Cornwall is my favourite holiday destination in the UK, but I agree with the Devonish way of doing things.

LineDriedSheets · 22/04/2023 16:17

They'll kick you out or not let you back in for that. They're very particular about jam first (because it is the only proper way).

Twinedpeaks · 22/04/2023 16:19

We're in Yorkshire so what should we do?

Dunk the scone in the tea. Obviously.

AppallinglyReheated · 22/04/2023 16:19

There is science for this conundrum...

A layer of fat should go between a sugar syrup (jam) and a cakey/bready product or it will via the magic of osmosis, suck the moisture out of the cake/bread/scone... and give it a not very nice sort of crispy yet soggy texture.

The ideal construction is thus:

Butter
Jam
Cream

However should by some horrific misadventure, you only have to hand clotted cream and jam and cannot go to the shops and purchase butter - then an acceptable solution is a thin layer of clotted cream - as a butter substitute - then jam, then a dollop of cream on top.

If you do have butter, then it would be wrong to put butter then cream, who puts fat next to fat?!

The only real crime in scone building is if someone were to put jam onto a naked scone (or you know, use double cream!!!!!!!).

OP - CF obviously realised she was rumbled and that is an absolutely piss poor back-pedal from her. Bask in the delightful warmth of smugness that you know, and she knows you and friend know, and that YOU know that WE all know too! I call that a win! :)

mainsfed · 22/04/2023 16:20

You don’t need butter if you have clotted cream!

Exactly! Clotted cream is thicker than jam, therefore it's much easier (and less messy) to spread jam onto clotted cream than the other way around. Butter doesn't come into the equation. #TeamDevon

I'm back, sorry to keep you dangling.

She rang me! As soon as she read the message! We've just spent the last 20 minutes laughing about it! She was totally convinced it was from me at first as it's the type of thing we do for each other, but the posts from cheeky cow totally made her think cheeky cow sent it!

I've told her to leave the post tagged for the time being....

Thanks for the update! I'm glad she knows it wasn't that other cheeky sod 🙂

Devon sounds a bit like devil, ergo they are wrong.

AmytheDancingBrick · 22/04/2023 15:50

You should do it the Lancashire way - Butter, jam, cream...

This is the only acceptable way
