To think that sex and gender are the same thing?

I don't buy into the distinction many people make between the two terms nowadays. "Gender" was never a word used to describe how one feels/identifies behaves until recently. It has long been synonymous with "sex". Just curious to see if anyone else agrees with me.

It's not a gender, it's a word for an adult of the female sex. Animals don't have genders, other than grammatical gender.

It works in the same way gender does.

MargotBamborough · 20/04/2023 15:34

BadNomad · 20/04/2023 15:31

By saying "adult female deer". Like "adult female monkey". There are many species that are just identified by sex.

Why would you say "adult female deer" when you can say "doe" which means the same thing?

MargotBamborough · 20/04/2023 15:35

BadNomad · 20/04/2023 15:33

It works in the same way gender does.

What works in the same way gender does?

What even is gender, other than (a) an aspect of grammar, or (b) outdated stereotypes?

lifeturnsonadime · 20/04/2023 15:35

You can't say you're a woman and also say you don't have a gender. That is literally what that is.

Yes I can. You can't tell me what I am and what I think.

I am a woman. I don't believe in or have a gender.

Blaueblumen · 20/04/2023 15:35

Whether people say 'sex' or 'gender' very much DOES matter. It's at the heart of the whole gender identity thing.
Once you muddy the waters between them it becomes harder to define 'man' in opposition to 'woman' and, if you can't define something/someone, you can't protect them.

But why would it muddy the waters? If we define a man/a male person as having xy chromosomes and a woman/a female as having xx chromosomes, where's the problem? Confused

Blaueblumen · 20/04/2023 15:37

You can't say you're a woman and also say you don't have a gender. That is literally what that is.

I can say what to want to describe myself.

I am a woman, a female with xx chromosomes. That is my gender, female.

By saying "adult female deer". Like "adult female monkey". There are many species that are just identified by sex.

The song in The Sound of Music would be a bit shit wouldn't it.

"Adult female deer, an adult female deer. Ray a drop of golden sun..."

MargotBamborough · 20/04/2023 15:32

Right, so if woman is a gender, what is the word for an adult human of the female biological sex?

According to Bad Nomad there isn't one.

The reality is that it is woman. We all know this.

The only people who want to deny this are genderists who think that men can also be women and that single sex spaces don't matter.

Right, so there isn’t another word after all, the only word is doe.
Monkey isn’t a species by the way.

Can you answer my questions, if you’re right that it refers to gender, how did they decided which animals do and don’t have genders? And what stereotypes does a deer have to perform to be considered a doe?

Ffs you're totally missing my whole point. My point is gender does matter. To be able to use the words man and woman we need to know what gender means. It is another poster who keeps saying gender doesn't matter and we should just use male and female. I disagree. I want to use the word woman. It's what I am. So gender does matter.

Can you actually explain what you think gender is, @BadNomad?

lifeturnsonadime · 20/04/2023 15:47

To be able to use the words man and woman we need to know what gender means.

No we don't. The one thing I share with every other woman on the planet is that I am an adult human female that has lived to adulthood.

I don't share gender with anyone.

I have nothing in common with males who believe in gender who call themselves women.

All we have to know is what sex we are the rest is based on personality and sexist stereotypes. It's nonsense.

BadNomad · 20/04/2023 15:48

"Doe" also refers to female hare and female kangaroo. So if someone says "I saw a doe" how do you know which animal they are talking about? You don't.

I've no idea how they decide what names to give animals. I'm sure you could Google it.

Indeed. I’d like to know how this woman gender is defined too, what’s the difference between the woman gender and the man gender? How do we define each of them?

No, that’s not what I asked is it? Don’t be disingenuous. I asked how they knew which animals had a gender and what behaviours a deer should display to be considered a doe. Are you able to answer, or no?

bellinisurge · 20/04/2023 15:52

I don't have a gender identity. I have a personality.

Naunet · 20/04/2023 15:52

"Doe" also refers to female hare and female kangaroo - just noticed you’ve right here admitted yourself that they are sex based words and nothing to do with gender! A doe doesn’t refer to a hare or a kangaroo who displays doe gendered behaviour, but instead to the female sex.

Your statement is contradictory. Are you saying gender doesn't matter? Or that it does but it should only mean what you think it should mean i.e. woman = adult female? Because if so, then like I said it is important that we understand what gender means.

It doesn't make any sense to say you are a woman but no one needs to know what that means.

A woman is an adult human female and a man is an adult human male.

If a woman told you she was incognitasensius, you would still know that she was a woman.

(Number 89 on the gender list - Incognitasensius: A gender where your true gender feelings are unknown likely non existent but you identify with genders.)

No my statement is not contradictory. The ONLY thing that all women have in common is that we are all human females who have survived to adult hood. That is literally what a woman is.

Gender is made up nonsense, based on personality and regressive sex stereotypes.

You have failed to explain what you believe female and male gender actually are despite being asked several times.

lifeturnsonadime · 20/04/2023 16:01

PMSL. Do you actually really believe that?

Everyone knows what a woman is, even the ones who pretend to be women.

Eh? I'm not David Attenborough. I imagine they observed the animals.

Yet, from a distance, you can only assume a deer is a doe based on how it looks and behaves based on what they think a doe should look and behave like.

Kinda like how baby boys with long hair and wearing pink are mistaken for being girls. That has nothing to do with sex. It's gender stereotyping.

How would I know she was still a woman? Because if a 6ft adult, with a shaved head, no makeup, wearing a chequered shirt, jeans and trainers comes up to me and says "I'm incognitasensius" I wouldn't have a clue if they were male or female.

I’ve never heard David Attenborough talk about how they decided which animals have a gender, funnily enough!

Why are you putting a distance restriction on the question? What gendered behaviours makes a deer a doe? Why is this such a hard question?! If you can’t answer for other animals, answer based on humans. How is the woman gender defined, and how is the man gender defined?
