To think that sex and gender are the same thing?

I don't buy into the distinction many people make between the two terms nowadays. "Gender" was never a word used to describe how one feels/identifies behaves until recently. It has long been synonymous with "sex". Just curious to see if anyone else agrees with me.

Nonsense.

Woman means adult female human, the same way doe means adult female deer.

Yes. "Doe" is a gender given for female deer by humans. Deer don't call themselves does.

What is an adult female monkey?

Whatt · 20/04/2023 15:04

The thing is if male and female are social constructs then adult human female means and adult human social construct?!

Its confusing as the very definition of women contains the word female which is said to be a fake construct.

Also would feminism need to change to womanism, as you can apparently change your gender but not your sex.

OnlyTheBravest · 20/04/2023 15:08

To me they are not the same thing.
Sex is immutable- Male/Female/Intersex
Gender is your perception of men/women based on social and cultural ideals and as such is fluid and can be changed.

The UK was slowly moving into the position that when sex matters it mattered more than gender but recently the trans movement has been trying to insist that gender should matter more than sex.

What?! Woman refers to an adult human female, nothing to do with gender. What do you think a mare is for example? A horse that plays a certain gender role?! No, it’s simply an adult female horse.

"Woman" is a gender. As is Mare. As per my last post, not every animal has a gender. They're just female/male animal. It is people who give things genders.

It’s not a gender, it’s a descriptive word for an adult female deer! 😂

Male and female are sexes, not social constructs. Man and woman are the made up things made to put humans in boxes depending on how it suits society at the time and leads to bullshit like females being called tomboys and lesbians if they don't look like what society thinks a woman should look like.

FFS I don't have a gender, it's a load of made up nonsense predominantly to support the oppression of women.

Even though I don't believe in and don't have a gender I'm a woman BECAUSE I"m a female human who has survived to adulthood.

You don't get to change meanings of words to support an anti-woman agenda.

No, they’re words to describe the female of different species. Why on earth would we need a word to describe animals that perform female stereotypes?! 🤣

Why do we need another word for female deer?

CoozudBoyuPuak · 20/04/2023 15:17

Sex is the biological fact of being male or female

Gender is the sociological emergent phenomenon of how you deal with reconciling yourself as an individual within a sexist world that constantly judges and forms expectations of you on the basis of your sex. We all either accept/ live within the bounds of some of that messy reality, and rebel against or ignore other aspects, to a greater or lesser extent.

Gender is real, different from sex, something that many people believe in ferevently and other people think should not exist, but is very rarely or never a basis for determining who should have access to particular resources or services. When resources or services are divided into mens and womens options, the only rational basis for those divisions is by biological sex, not gender

Blaueblumen · 20/04/2023 15:17

It matters because if you remove gender then you can no longer be called a woman.

What Confused?

I am calling myself a woman because that's what I am. I am an adult human female.

Why do we need another word for female deer?

What do you mean by “another” word? What are the two words that describe an adult female deer? Doe and…?

Riverlee · 20/04/2023 15:20

Sex has always meant the biological difference.

Gender used to be used for both biology and the social construct, hence why there is so much confusion today.

By the way @BadNomad if you think these terms describe genders, how did they figure out which animals do and don’t have a gender?

Blaueblumen · 20/04/2023 15:21

Gender is your perception of men/women based on social and cultural ideals

Why so complicated? Why not simply base it on your chromosomes - male or female?

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 20/04/2023 15:22

Deer is the type, doe and stag are the sex. They (as far as I know) don't have genders.

Humans have women and men for the sex. Gender is how we are seen in society.

Blaueblumen · 20/04/2023 15:23

Gender used to be used for both biology and the social construct, hence why there is so much confusion today.

Why is there a need for a 'social construct' view of gender? Why not use it only for the biological aspect - that would be soo much easier and objective?!

You can't say you're a woman and also say you don't have a gender. That is literally what that is.

Do you even know what the word woman means? It means wife-man. "Man" is the neutral word for people. Man. Mankind. Then they made up a word to separate females from men, and at that time females were seen as the lesser sex. Wife to men. The servants to men. And so were named women.

It's all bullshit based on misogyny that goes back millennia.

Blaueblumen · 20/04/2023 14:48

The poster agrees with you that 'he is male regardless of how he dresses'.
This man's SEX is male. His GENDER may be whatever he says, as that's a socially constructed idea.

I understand that. The man remains male, regardless of how he dresses.

It doesn't matter whether people call him being male sex or gender - to me is and always will be a MAN.

Whether people say 'sex' or 'gender' very much DOES matter. It's at the heart of the whole gender identity thing.
Once you muddy the waters between them it becomes harder to define 'man' in opposition to 'woman' and, if you can't define something/someone, you can't protect them.
You and I agree, by the way – yes, a man being a biological man and a woman being a biological woman is what matters most for things like public safety and dignity as well as healthcare.
What I'm saying that doesn't agree with your posts is that you're using the words sex and gender interchangeably. As do those who seek to erode women's boundaries and perhaps women full stop. 'Male or female' is NOT the same (in the English-language context) as 'masculine or feminine'. The first is biological fact. The second is a construct. A man can be called 'feminine' if he e.g. has 'camp' mannerisms or a soft voice. A woman can be called 'masculine' if she e.g. speaks forcefully or has short cropped hair. But he is still male and she is still female.

You’ve been corrected on this repeatedly, it is not “literally” a gender at all. You are wrong.

Female?

Female doesn’t describe an adult female deer. If you just said female, how would anyone know what species you’re referring to? How would they know you’re talking about an adult of that species?
What stereotypes do deers need to perform to be considered a doe in your mind?

It's not a gender, it's a word for an adult of the female sex. Animals don't have genders, other than grammatical gender.

By saying "adult female deer". Like "adult female monkey". There are many species that are just identified by sex.

Right, so if woman is a gender, what is the word for an adult human of the female biological sex?
