My DD school has put a message on dojo this morning that it's victorian day on Wednesday and the children come in dressed up.

I've knocked this up on the sewing machine and wondered if ifs victorian enough with her summer dress under?

I sent my daughter in on Tudor Day in an Elsa costume. It was what we had, and I can't sew to save my life.

Apparently she was one of several Tudor Elsas that day, so no harm done.

It'll be grand.

Is there literally no dress up challenge that fucking Elsa cannot be shoehorned into?

LuckyDipForTheEuro · 17/04/2023 20:05

Cinderella Disney dresses seem to be sufficient generally for any sort of dress up day regardless of topic!

mathanxiety · 17/04/2023 20:07

Tis lovely, OP. Well done.

It's lucky I was able to borrow a tunic-y kind of thing for my son or he might have ended up as Tudor Spider-Man. I was seriously considering it.

"Well... castles were full of spiders in those days..."

It does get a bit wearing, doesn’t it, all these dress up days? I know the kids love it but it’s pretty rough for parents.

You do.realise dress up.days are expensive and can be time consuming for parents ?
This is why parents shoehorn,Elsa, are what ever other costume they might have at home ,🙄
World sodding book day has a lot to answer for!

WeBuiltThisCity · 18/04/2023 07:53

I remember in the late 80’s our school doing various Victorian theme days, mum always dressed me as a boy to avoid most the faff!

ChocChipHandbag · 18/04/2023 10:09

@x2boys dress up days don't have to cost money if you think laterally about using clothes you already have at home (and no, I don't necessarily mean destroying them) or sharing/hand me downs from other parents with older kids. Charity shop stuff at a push.

On the other hand, Amazon and supermarkets make a mint from parents who spend money on shit synthetic Elsa and Disney dresses.

MrsSkylerWhite · 18/04/2023 10:11

Does she have a long nightie that could go under the apron?

Laiste · 18/04/2023 10:32

Victorian day
Greek day
Wear something with stripes
Easter bonnet
Word book day
Red nose day (wear something red)
Yellow day (can't even remember why now)

We never seem to have anything the right colour or pattern in the right size/season when it suddenly comes up! Yay we have something stripey .... but it's a stripey summer vest which is a bit too small and it's December.

These days for the colour days we just put that coloured ribbon in her hair.

The point is it's what peoop!e already have in ,they haven't gone out to buy an " Elsa"dress because school have decided to.throw a random dress up.day, their child already owns one ,,I have neither the time or the money to make a costume .

OMG dying at your username 😂😂*

I don't understand ... am I being very thick?

liverpoolnana · 18/04/2023 11:47

I don't understand either.

Time40 · 18/04/2023 12:06

Oh good - I'm glad it's not just me.

ChocChipHandbag · 18/04/2023 12:26

But someone has paid money for the Elsa dress at some point @x2boys, am not saying that people are buying them for specific dress up days. Nobody needs to spend money on costumes if they have clothes at home. But people have been seduced by supermarket tat and lost the ability to use what they already own. Costumes were not in supermarkets when I was a kid and my Mum managed to come up with all sorts of things for Halloween and other occasions.

Yes because their child wanted the Elsa dress!it's like my child has a minion onsie, which he wears all the time at home I sent him.as a minion on world book day because I have neither the time ,money or the inclination to.be pissing, around making or buying costumes costumes, that's why people dress their kids in costumes they already have!

GoodChat · 17/04/2023 14:41

They won't, they'll go in beige chinos and a white shirt smeared with a bit of dirt Grin maybe a flat cap if their parents are feeling a bit 'peaky blinders'

Dark grey school trousers tucked into grey socks. School shirt with obligatory dirt smudges, waistcoat cut out if an old black pillow case and a flat cap off great granda (pre peaky times!).

Why on earth would this be bragging?!! 🤣 That will be perfect OP, simple and does the job.

SparkyBlue · 18/04/2023 13:00

redspottedmug · 17/04/2023 14:40

It won't matter because all the boys will wear ye olde football kit regardless of the theme.

So true. Ten year old DD is constantly bewildered as to the boys in her class lack of ability to wear anything other than the home or away kit. They are zombie footballers at Halloween.
Thankfully we only do Halloween and world book day . A nearby primary school celebrated their 100th anniversary several years back and it was understandably a big occasion. Everyone dressed up as children from 100 years earlier and they made national news. But obviously it was part of the 100 year thing so everyone was very excited about it.

LuvSmallDogs · 18/04/2023 13:03

On world book day my nine year old had cardboard mouse ears glued to an alice band, an empty pop bottle re-labelled as "delayed action mouse maker" and a "tail" cut out of a pair of old leggings pinned to his jeans (he was in the process of turning into a mouse, so normal clothes were fine, I told him).

If school gave me two days notice for Victorian day and I couldn't find anything from the charity shops, I'd just send him in mufti, because 2 days is a bloody pisstake!

Good on you for doing such a brilliant job, OP, but I'd be tempted to complain about lack of notice anyway - some kids are going to miss out because of it!

FortnightWithFriends · 18/04/2023 13:05

My first thought was this was a stealth brag too. I am not the only one. Well done OP. It looks great and you are a super mum.

NewMarmalade · 18/04/2023 13:08

These days can be so stressful for kids. Not just the poor ones but the ones without engaged and helpful parents, whose parents resented having to organise this kind of outfit. I was the latter and dreaded these days and the arguments they would set off at home. It was not my fault school was doing this stuff but it felt at home like it was.

LuvSmallDogs · 18/04/2023 13:09

Ooh, just wanted to add, if the clothes aren't selling a costume enough, go for props! I reckon I could make a Victorian paper boy by mocking up a "Titanic sinks" front page with marker and paper, maybe glue it to cardboard from the recycling for durability!

Blossomandblooms · 18/04/2023 13:11

@LauraSaidIShouldBeNicer absolutely amazing job - I wish I was as creative as you :)
