To send my DD in this for victorian day at school

My DD school has put a message on dojo this morning that it's victorian day on Wednesday and the children come in dressed up.

I've knocked this up on the sewing machine and wondered if ifs victorian enough with her summer dress under?

We got about the same notice about Victorian day and I just sent DD in one of her party dresses and pigtails and told her she was one of the upper classes who dressed in elaborate dresses all the time. So your costume is way better and more suited than what DD got 😂

Needmorelego · 17/04/2023 14:59

If schools actually gave more than ten seconds notice for these things parents of the football fans could have actually made some sort of Victorian version of a football kit. That would have been quite fun 😂
Unfortunately schools still keep doing these things with such short notice.
Your outfit is brilliant @LauraSaidIShouldBeNicer .

Goodoccasionallypoor · 17/04/2023 15:00

Do schools really give less than 48 hours for stuff like this? So unreasonable.

Albiboba · 17/04/2023 15:00

LauraSaidIShouldBeNicer · 17/04/2023 14:37

OK I won't bite... OK maybe a little.

Yes it matters to me because when I told my DD about it she was excited to dress up, so if it matters to her it matters to me 😊

Still doesn’t answer why the opinions of strangers on mumsnet are relevant.

If you’re DD likes it and is excited surely that’s all you need?

Marsyas · 17/04/2023 15:04

I think it will be fine.
Victorian day at our school, half the girls came in princess dresses.

inappropriateraspberry · 17/04/2023 15:05

Can you make a mob cap? That would def add to the Victorian feel. The dress will be fine under the apron.

SparklyBlackKitten · 17/04/2023 15:06

Humble brag alert

SoupDragon · 17/04/2023 15:08

Albiboba · 17/04/2023 14:27

Is it Victorian enough?
Does it matter?
If it’s 2 days notice for a complete non event I’m most people aren’t at home on a Monday morning to be knocking something up on the sewing machine.

Weird post.

Not as weirds as yours 😂😂

SoupDragon · 17/04/2023 15:09

How is it "bragging"? WTAF is wrong with people?

uncomfortablydumb53 · 17/04/2023 15:15

It's absolutely fine
I remember mine had a Greek day once, I sent them wrapped in a white bedsheet and a thin gold belt around it
Well done for sewing the costume

Have you looked at the picture? There's a cap/bonnet type thing.

Nope, dispite a few thinking this is a brag post, I definitely can't do that so googled victorian girls hat pattern and seen a bonnet thing was 2 curves sewn together and winged it 😂😂

GoodChat · 17/04/2023 15:16

@Albiboba OP's asking if it's ok for her to wear or whether she needs to find something else to wear under the creation. It's a constant theme at the moment posters commenting "why do you need Mumsnet approval" but here you all are, desperate to add your two pence worth.

LauraSaidIShouldBeNicer · 17/04/2023 15:26

@GoodChat thank you I am surprised by all the hostility if am honest 😂

I think everyone's a bit tense from having their kids home for a couple of weeks Grin

inappropriateraspberry · 17/04/2023 15:29

@GoodChat I didn't click to see the full picture so didn't notice the bonnet!

Ah makes sense. I think the bonnet is my favourite part!

ichundich · 17/04/2023 15:35

redspottedmug · 17/04/2023 14:40

It won't matter because all the boys will wear ye olde football kit regardless of the theme.

Haha, so true!

Is this some kind of stealth boast?

Yes

It would be pretty quiet round here if nobody ever posted for strangers opinions. It’s kind of the point of a forum.

^^ This is the kind of look you're aiming for I think. A full white overall/pinafore dress over a long sleeved dress. I wouldn't use the school dress tbh.

TheBirdintheCave · 17/04/2023 15:41

@Beneficialchampion2 If you know how to sew that is not boasting 😂 As OP said, this is pretty simple stuff!

(Not saying this is bad work OP)

GoodChat · 17/04/2023 15:27

It doesn’t normally get this bad until halfway through the long summer holiday though. 😂

azimuth299 · 17/04/2023 15:44

It's a bit of a weird post. OP must know that her DD will be the only one in a hand-stitched apron and bonnet when they've had two days' notice!

It's okay to post that you're proud of it OP, you don't need to pretend that you don't know if it's good. It is good.

CruCru · 17/04/2023 15:46

It’s a bit off topic but two days’ notice for a costume is unacceptable. What if the parents didn’t check Dojo or are working flat out for the next two days?

A friend’s school has got rid of all costume days because the parents are either working or poor.
