My DD school has put a message on dojo this morning that it's victorian day on Wednesday and the children come in dressed up.

I've knocked this up on the sewing machine and wondered if ifs victorian enough with her summer dress under?

Nothing at all to do with the thread but this surely has to be the best username ever. I am crying.

Honestly amazed I have never noticed his name could be turned around like that before 😂 bloody hell, poor bloke!! SHAT PARP!!!!!

Conkersinautumn · 17/04/2023 15:49

Gingham was a popular victorian fabric. I remember putting my child in her victorian costume for school and the kids and TA told her it wasn't right as it wasn't grey or black. Amazing how many are unable to comprehend black and white photos!
I'm all for some colour in historical costume! Queen Victoria was very fond of pink before her mourning preference

@GoodChat thank you I am surprised by all the hostility if am honest 😂

Looks good to me.
Ignore the bitchy comments unfortunately that's mn these days.
It is possible to show a skill you've got without folk thinking it's bragging.

I worked in a primary for a decade and we did Victorian day too. That costume is absolutely fine. If you do have black tights pop her in those.

And I think you have done an amazing job with 2 days notice. To those saying who else is going to have a hand made costume, you would be amazed at what some parents can pull out of the bag last minute.

Children wore dresses of all kinds, black and white is what servants wore which is where everyone gets that idea from.

BMW6 · 17/04/2023 15:55

A shawl would add Victorian authenticity, boots are a must.

SadCelticBunny · 17/04/2023 15:56

My days of having to produce such costumes are long past thankfully!!

Well done, my Nanna and Great Auntie Gwen were schoolgirls in the 1900s and wore just those pinnies!
I hope DD has a lovely day ☺️

They won't, they'll go in beige chinos and a white shirt smeared with a bit of dirt Grin maybe a flat cap if their parents are feeling a bit 'peaky blinders'

Haha, yes, my son went in beige trews, white shirt and a flat cap in 2002.
Perfect, OP. Unless she’s got a longer black or navy dress.

Still doesn’t answer why the opinions of strangers on mumsnet are relevant.

If you’re DD likes it and is excited surely that’s all you need?

Do you not understand the concept of Aibu?
this is what people do.ssk.a question and others say if they are unreasonable or not ?😂

LauraSaidIShouldBeNicer · 17/04/2023 16:03

We have her grey school dress if that would look better?

Yeah but why do.schools four in the first place ?
I'm sure some parents are talented and enjoy this kind of thing but for most it's just a ballache .

I think the blue will look better just because of the sleeves and collar

dizzydizzydizzy · 17/04/2023 16:16

Looks great! Well done!

Verassata · 17/04/2023 16:17

@x2boys it is a standard thing, so I assume as part of the curriculum they can choose to teach. I was just a volunteer in school. It shows children how people used to live and how different school is today than back then. It is done in year 4 and very much looked forward to. The children seem to really engage with the physical fitness all in rows outside circling their arms.

They love dressing up. Lots of families pass down their clothes or lend them out, we have a lovely community feel at school. Children also get sent out of class for messing around and we whip them on their hands. Well at least that is what the other children think is happening. We always have willing volunteers who yelp whilst we smack a desk with a ruler, we draw some red lines on their hand in felt tip. They love it. We also make the left handed staff members write with their right hands which causes much hilarity with the children. The teachers make an effort to make it look awful. It is just a fun day. There is a special day in every year group at school.

It is never sprung on a parent like OP and starts in year 1, it is on the calendar from the start of the year.

Aria999 · 17/04/2023 16:19

YABU for being able to knock up a Victorian costume on a sewing machine in the morning before school starts!

It looks great 🤣

GonnaBeYoniThisChristmas · 17/04/2023 16:52

No it is absolutely not ok for her to wear her blue gingham dress as part of her very above average Victorian dressing up day at school.

You must get the sewing machine out again and fashion a long sleeved mid calf length dress from thick grey cotton.

CocktailsAndSunshine · 17/04/2023 16:59

YABU for participating in this when they have told you on Monday that you need a costume for Wednesday. What kind of bollocks is that!

Needmorelego · 17/04/2023 16:59

@GonnaBeYoniThisChristmas sewing machine ! New fangled nonsense 😂
The average Victorian mama would have been sewing by hand (and by candlelight) 😂

LauraSaidIShouldBeNicer · 17/04/2023 19:12

Yep going to stick to the blue dress. Thank you all for your help!

At least ten days’ notice should be given for all dress up days, even a blue shirt for Wateraid. With a week’s notice, I could turn out a magnificent costume, but history, costume, sewing and quilting are my things. However, dress up days are difficult and expensive for most folk. Start of term and no more than two per term would be fair.

MrsMoastyToasty · 17/04/2023 19:43

I think she might need a shawl or cape if it's cold.

davegrohll · 17/04/2023 19:45

I think it looks great op !

NOOOOO! Surely not?!

ChocChipHandbag · 17/04/2023 19:55

Looks great but definitely needs a long sleeved dress or blouse.

Slidingdowntherainbow · 17/04/2023 19:58

I'd be chuffed if I could make something like that, good job!

Two days notice is shocking, and really unfair for families with multiple children. I'd struggle to find the time to source multiple outfits with two days notice and work.

temperedolive · 17/04/2023 20:00

I sent my daughter in on Tudor Day in an Elsa costume. It was what we had, and I can't sew to save my life.

Apparently she was one of several Tudor Elsas that day, so no harm done.

It'll be grand.
