Am I the only person who never opens their front door to anyone?

I just heard my front door go, so I hid in the kitchen out of sight, no idea who it was but I'm now very curious.
I wasn't expecting anyone, if it was family I would have answered because they wouldn't come unannounced.
I also never answer my phone if I don't recognise the number. Is this just me or does anyone else do this?
I have never really thought about why until now.

Delivery people have to ring the bell they need to get your signature or take a photo of the parcel ad the open door.

Not always. Mine leave the parcel and take a pic of where they left it. But I prefer to pick up parcels myself and there are collection points everywhere now.

Why do you prefer picking it up to having it delivered to your door?

This didn’t happen, did it?

I answer the door... but rarely answer the phone to an unknown number a its usually spam. If they want me they'll leave a message.

Coffeeandbourbons · 18/04/2023 14:39

I always answer unless I’m on the toilet/in the shower/breastfeeding etc. Why wouldn’t I Confused

Couriers can’t leave parcels, it’s not been delivered until it’s been handed to someone whether at the address or a neighbour. They age to take a photo with an open door to prove delivery. The only exception is your designated safe place.

DarrellRiversCriminalBehaviourOrder · 18/04/2023 14:54

I have to say that if you're willing to give your time to a load of faceless strangers on here, especially when you don't like them, it seems strange to see it as too limited and precious to answer the door to someone who wants to speak to you. If it's a salesperson, it's easy enough to say that you don't sign up for things on the door and close it. Door to door salespeople expect that.

I feel a need to reassure all those who think you have to sprint to the door, fling it wide open, invite all and sundry inside or whatever, that it really isn't anything so exciting. You just walk to the door, open it normally and have a short exchange with whoever is there.

Most of our local couriers (Amazon, Evri, DPD, etc) are happy enough to leave parcels on our doorstep and take pictures to show that's what they've done, if we've not been in. Sometimes they put the parcel behind a couple of planters we have by the front door to make them less visible from the roadside.

It seems to be mostly Parcelforce/RM who take the parcel away with them if you don't answer the door.

SparklyBlackKitten · 18/04/2023 14:57

Wind up.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 18/04/2023 15:01

Of course.. To both
There is the option to say " Not today thank you" or hang up phone
I can't understand why you don't satisfy your curiosity by answering rather than wondering afterwards!

pfcpompeysarah · 18/04/2023 15:05

I don't answer the door unless I am expecting a visitor, family members usually call ahead but that's because I have hearing difficulties and might not hear the door. I also never answer the phone unless it is a recognised contact number, anyone else can leave a message if it is important.

EmotionalSupportWyrm · 18/04/2023 15:10

Very odd behaviour IMO. I don't get cold calls as I'm not on a busy street. I'm as antisocial as they come - but the last "surprise" visitor I had was a neighbour's young teen daughter asking me to keep a lookout for her new cat that had got out the front door instead of the back - and she was worried she would not be able to find her way home again.

We had a very nice little chat about cats of ours in the past that had done just the same and always found their way home.

I would always answer the door or the phone.

BasicDad · 18/04/2023 15:18

I get a photo/video popup on my phone and TV to show who's at the door. I'll answer based on who it is 🤓

If they leave parcels on your doorstep the courier is liable if they are nicked. That is why they don’t do it, including Evri & DPD. The point of the photo is to show it’s been handed to a resident/neighbour. I use couriers all the time, sometimes multiple deliveries a day.

Won’t be ignoring the door again, seeing as she went straight to the neighbours.

Hey, maybe it was the same person but she just liked BadLad better.

ColourMeBlue · 18/04/2023 16:46

Yes I always do this, much to the annoyance of my partner.i have no desire to open the door to anyone who has turned up announced.if it's that important, they can leave a note.same as a unknown number-if it's that important, leave a voicemail.

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 18/04/2023 16:51

I don't answer the door either sometimes if not expecting somebody and the other day wish I did not answer as seemed to be some fake charity guy dressed up in a weird suit and his stupid banter nearly drove me mad so in the end I said sorry not interested and went back inside. I don't answer numbers don't know either as so many scams. Nothing weird about what a person wants to do inside their own home.

Why do you prefer picking it up to having it delivered to your door?

Because I'm out a lot so they end up leaving them with my neighbour and I don't want to keep bothering them. Or they leave them by the bins. My pick up point is just round the corner so it's very easy.

Maybe there are different rules round here because my packages are left on the doorstep all the time, or behind the bins. Perhaps it's the smaller packages they leave like that. In any case I prefer to go and pick them up because then i'm not waiting around for a delivery and can get on with my day as I please.

Rosula · 18/04/2023 17:01

If you never answer the door, how do you deal with things like meter readings? They won't accept customer readings for ever.

Why listen to his stupid banter long enough to be driven mad? It's easy enough to get rid of someone like this by saying you're not interested right at the start and closing the door. I like using the "Sorry, I'm in the middle of an online work meeting" excuse
