Just for fun

And to give me ideas on all the things I'm not doing but should

Drink more water
Get more fibre
Take magnesium
At least two omega 3 fish portions per week
Walk or ride anywhere within 1 mile radius of home

What else. There must be loads.

Garden if you can (and like it)

Be positive. Stay away from the doom and gloom. Positive people live longer

NurseButtercup · 16/04/2023 21:34

Laugh every single day.....

FuckYouEzekiel · 16/04/2023 21:35

Moonshine5 · 16/04/2023 21:35

Laugh (belly laugh preferably till you cry) weekly

parietal · 16/04/2023 21:36

friendship and community - being part of a group of family / friends / neighbours is a strong predictor of living longer, and being lonely is linked to worse health and shorter lifespan.

so volunteer and join community groups and make and keep connections with other people - it is very important.

Significantly reduce stress

Work with out circadian rhythm by getting sunlight within the first half hour or so of waking

Improve our omega 3 to omega 6 ratio to reduce inflammation

Eat 30 different fruit and veg per week to help our gut microbiome

Eat while, minimally processed, full fat foods only

Are there 30 different fruit & vegetables?

InvincibleInvisibility · 16/04/2023 21:51

I'm not worried about living as long as possible. I just want the best quality of life now that I can. So I try to:

Drink lots of water (no coffee, tea, soft drinks. Limited juice. No alcohol cos it gives me migraines)

Reduce sugar and salt

Avoid highly processed food as much as possible

Eat lots of vegetables

Eat some fruit

Stay a healthy weight

Move as much as possible: both formal exercise that I enjoy and also just around the house and garden

Sleep (this one is tricky as an insomniac so I've got help from the Dr)

Reduce stress and anxiety

Live more in the moment

Plan fun things with my family at the weekend

Read lots of books

Simplify my home and life

Things I've heard are good but I can't get into: meditation and journaling

@biehrvduevr @ChampagneCommunist it's not actually that hard - I did it for a few weeks ...keeping it up is the challenge ... by time you have had a (massive Mumsnet) salad, a stir fry, a roast with lots of veg and try a variety of fruit it soon adds up. You can also include pulses, nuts and herbs (herbs count as 1/4 of a point though)

TwoProngedFork · 16/04/2023 22:11

@ssd yes, I found that particular post funny.

ssd · 16/04/2023 22:12

Trouble is, we all know fit, healthy people who died young...and older smokers, who drank and eat unhealthily who lived to 80

There's no rhyme or reason to it all

Try to enjoy it when you can

TwoProngedFork · 16/04/2023 22:13

Try to get 7-8 hours sleep minimum.

Incorporate weekly strength training sessions into your routine to build muscle.

InvincibleInvisibility · 16/04/2023 22:13

Loads of fruit and veg - way more than 30.

For example:

Carrots, leeks, swede, pumpkin, onion, potato, beansprouts
Aubergine, courgette, peppers (3 colours)
Tomatoes, broccoli, cauliflower
Salad (various leaves like iceberg), cucumber
Bananas, apples, pears, grapes, strawberries, raspberries, blackcurrants, oranges, lemons, clementines
Melon, pineapple, cherries

Zipps · 16/04/2023 22:18

Laugh
Go out and enjoy yourself
Say no to anything you don't want to do
Make your home and garden a peaceful sanctuary
Spend time with animals
Listen to music
Ride motorcycles

So many people that we know mid to late 50's dying young.

KnittedCardi · 16/04/2023 22:23

Be more Sardinian! Lots of meat, bread, cheese, deep red wine, coffee. Yes. I know. But also lots of fresh fruit and veg, outdoor life, sunshine, exercise, community. Not only are they long lived, but also super healthy.

mondaytosunday · 16/04/2023 22:23

It comes down to three things really.
Keep weight consistent and be physically active.
Be involved in community and/or family (be socially active).
Be lucky not to get cancer or other life limiting illness.

Radio 4 interviewed a few people who turned 90 when the Queen died and that was the three common denominators, which is consistent with other anecdotal evidence, but I'm sure there have been more scientific studies too.

AmeliaWarnerBros · 16/04/2023 22:27

Live happily alone
Grow lots of plants.
Surround yourself with pets
Dance in the kitchen
Peaceful mindset
Plenty of naps and sleep

@FlyWildAndFree; I concur. All I can add is to enjoy being alone in general (ie don't let being alone prevent you from doing stuff like holidaying alone etc) & don't feel guilty about treating yourself now & then 😊

Ludlow2 · 16/04/2023 22:41

Keep social
Keep walking
Have good flexibility
Maintain muscle strength
Breathe well
Drink lots of water
Fast periodically
Smile and be thankful for everything
