to throw baby's clothes away if soiled?

Putting in the washing machine seems gross!! DH says most people wash anything a baby has used but I can’t think this would come out clean?! We have an eco friendly machine that doesn’t go higher than 60 degrees and below 90 just makes me even more nervous about it.

Not gonna lie I’ve thrown out a few items which just seemed beyond repair. Most of my baby clothes have been second, third or even fourth hand so have done their time. Obviously if it’s easy enough to rinse and wash then that’s ideal but I don’t know why so many are getting so high and mighty on you!

It’s because the stains remain that worries me

Washing your clothes in a washing machine removes bacteria. If you were to pour red dye on your white dress and wash it, the dress would remain red due to the colours in the dye, but the dress would be clean. It's the same with poo stains.

TheGoogleMum · 14/04/2023 12:11

I usually try to wash and then might chuck if stained after washing. Often if washed soon enough the stain does come out

speakout · 14/04/2023 12:11

Of course I would wash them.
Remove any solids into the bin, then soak them in hot water with a good scoop of laundry detergent and a capful of dettol- or any other baby safe diinfectant.
In the morning take them out of the bucket, give them another quick rinse uder the tap- a quick hand squeeze and put them in the washing machine a hot cycle.

It is very wasteful to throw away clothes just because they are dirty.

Flittingaboutagain · 14/04/2023 11:54

MonicaFaloolaGeller I'm proud of that one for you too.

Sunshine is incredible.

OP you need a chemistry lesson. The stain will most likely come out in sunlight but it's just a colour change anyway. Not harmful!

It was January when this happened as well, so chances are it wasn’t even sunny- certainly not hanging outside weather!

Oysterbabe · 14/04/2023 12:12

Sunlight will get the stain out.
Of course you shouldn't throw stuff away.

horridjobescapee · 14/04/2023 12:12

Soak with vanish or ace bleach.

Wash and hang in the sun.

I wouldn't throw any clothes away unless they were absolutely covered in stains.

Use an anti bacterial add to your wash if you're worried about germs

Wow, that looks as though your baby lives on turmeric!

It was the first poop in several days and he was only 6 weeks old… ye gads the force with which it came out of him, it was up to his neck and under his armpits…

emmalouise83 · 14/04/2023 12:15

MonicaFaloolaGeller · 14/04/2023 11:48

Wash it. It’ll be fine. I pride myself on never throwing away clothes that got poonami’d and have managed some absolutely amazing rescues! Here’s a before and after I’m particularly proud of.

Wow that's definitely impressive! I'd have binned that one for sure 😂

MonicaFaloolaGeller · 14/04/2023 12:16

Basically, Napisan and vanish (the scrunchy bottle and the powder) is a winning combination. And a cupful of white vinegar in the drawer.

Lcb123 · 14/04/2023 12:16

I’d at least try cleaning them first, very wasteful to just bin. They’ll only get more dirt on them. Stained wouldn’t bother me though

Caspianberg · 14/04/2023 12:16

Use cold water first to remove stain, ie in sink with washing up liquid. Hot water first sets stains

You can use the sun in winter, even laundry on a rack indoors infront of a window will help stains.

I have just packed up ds reusable nappies which he wore and pooped in daily for 2 years. They are all white white, not a single stain. They will go in loft for any future child or be past on.
Washed at 60 with Ariel bio powder, hung in sun if any remaining stain.

BreviloquentBastard · 14/04/2023 12:17

Babies truly are disgusting aren't they.

It'll be fine if it's washed, stains aren't the end of the world.

DiscoDragon · 14/04/2023 12:17

If I'd done this with my first baby I'd have been throwing out 3/4 items of clothes daily! She used to projectile vomit after feeding and it would go all over everything, she also had plenty of poonamis! I didn't worry too much about any persistent stains, I'd just save those clothes for crawling around in at home. She's now nearly 12 and still stains her clothes regularly with food and mud and grass and paint etc and I still don't throw them out! If she wants stain-free clothes she's just going to have to learn to be more careful with them, I'm not made of money!

ACynicalDad · 14/04/2023 12:18

Also if they were close to being grown out I'd be more tempted to chuck, but if it fitted and could be scraped that's what I'd do. It felt like my wife was quite good at leaving them for me, but this may be my mind playing tricks on me...

fyn · 14/04/2023 12:19

If you are worried, this is how we clean our cloth nappies and never, ever get stains.

30 minute wash on 40 with a scoop of vanish and bio, this rinses off the poo.

Then long wash at 60.

It’s because the stains remain that worries me

Rinse the clothes in cold water then spray a stain remover like Vanish (or any supermarket own brand equivalent), leave on for 15 minutes then put it in the washing machine as normal.

The stains are actually more likely to come out if you wash at a low temperature. High heat can lock in stains. I never wash any clothes higher than 30 degrees, only towels and sheets.

PousseyNotMoira · 14/04/2023 12:20

inftup · 14/04/2023 11:33

@ditalini ? How would this be a joke? I’m a first time mum and wouldn’t keep my own clothes in that situation so I wonder what others do.

You genuinely believe people throw out baby clothes every time a baby poos? This is something that, in your head, exists within the realms of rational reality?

Writeandroll · 14/04/2023 12:21

Sunlight removes the stains.

got to admit, I’ve definitely thrown away the odd baby grow, particularly if on a day out because I don’t want to face cleaning after a few hours, but never as a matter of course.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 14/04/2023 12:22

I used to soak overnight in powder with some biotex or napisan
If those are hard to get now just use a scoop of vanish
You may have set the stain if you've washed at a higher temperature
You can't avoid stains with babies!
I only remember throwing a horribly messy vest once but that's all

CoffeeWithMyOxygen · 14/04/2023 12:23

You’d faint at my house OP, we use cloth nappies and wipes! A bit of staining is fine - it’ll come out in the sun when you can dry outside and won’t hurt your baby at all.

Purplehyena · 14/04/2023 12:23

So ridiculously irresponsible and wasteful in terms of the environment and also financially. Perfectly possible to get clothes clean and stains out and if they’ve been through the wash bacteria isn’t going to be an issue.
I used cloth nappies and found them much more reliable in terms of avoiding leakages and far less of a faff than I expected.

Cinnamon23 · 14/04/2023 12:23

Laundry sanitiser and if you’re that concerned - there’s a Dettol one.

Stain remover for the stains.

Straycats · 14/04/2023 12:25

inftup · 14/04/2023 11:34

I did wash a few at the start but they were still a bit stained afterwards and I worried bacteria had remained on them! I am a bit anxious about cleanliness though.

The unhealthiest kids come from sterile homes, hence why having pets, letting them get dirty is best for their immune system and gut bacteria.
Embrace germs they help with your immune system, farmers kids are the healthiest and if you're squeamish don't read further-fecal matter in scientific tests work and that's what kids in these environments come across daily. You honestly think those cleaning sprays antibacterial wipes hand sanitizers etc are good for you? Welcome to the world of chemicals then.

MrsR87 · 14/04/2023 12:26

Ha ha! If you had my little girl, you’d have no vests left. She’s a poonami machine 🤣🤣🤣

For peace of mind I pop some Dettol laundry cleanser in with my detergent. If a stain remains, sunlight will get rid of it! On the line is best but in winter I’ve left in a sunny window and it’s gone within a few days! It works for pretty much any organic stain. My husband once got turmeric based curry all over a very expensive, new white shirt and everyone was laughing that I wouldn’t get it out! The sunlight did😍
