to throw baby's clothes away if soiled?

Putting in the washing machine seems gross!! DH says most people wash anything a baby has used but I can’t think this would come out clean?! We have an eco friendly machine that doesn’t go higher than 60 degrees and below 90 just makes me even more nervous about it.

OP posts:

I do if I've rinsed it first and washed on 90c and it's still stained

Washing it at 90c has probably set the stain in. Lower temperatures are better.

Flittingaboutagain · 14/04/2023 11:54

MonicaFaloolaGeller I'm proud of that one for you too.

Sunshine is incredible.

OP you need a chemistry lesson. The stain will most likely come out in sunlight but it's just a colour change anyway. Not harmful!

PuddlesPityParty · 14/04/2023 11:55

Staining doesn’t mean bacteria is there.

kagerou · 14/04/2023 11:55

Should point out that I started using cloth nappies because I found they massively reduce poo leakages. (Also because the idea of using a nappy for two hours tops then throwing it to landfill where it will exist waaay after my tiny baby and even her grandchildren have died is just so depressing)

In the nicest possible way id recommend you get over yourself and try them!

No point having an eco machine if you're doing something as terrible for the environment as buying new clothes all the time

JMSA · 14/04/2023 11:56

I refer you to the current 'lazy' thread Grin

Cm078 · 14/04/2023 11:57

I can't remember what I used to do as newborn, but my DS has recently potty trained & still at the point of pooing in his pants at time 🙄 if its quite bad i throw them out. But they are cheap to buy.

JMSA · 14/04/2023 11:58

Joke Wink
But seriously, don't allow your anxiety over this to get too out of control. So what if there's the odd stain on a bib or babygro? It won't cause any harm.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 14/04/2023 11:58

In the gentlest way possible OP how do you think people deal with reusable nappies?

idontlikementhols · 14/04/2023 11:59

Use anti bac laundry detergent.

SunnySaturdayMorning · 14/04/2023 11:59

Christ you’ll have nothing left then, will you?

I don’t give a shit about waste or the environment or whatever, but this is truly ridiculous.

WorkingWhileStressed · 14/04/2023 12:00

OP, for stains, leave it to soak in a bucket with Vanish Oxi action for a few hours, then run it through the wash as normal. That sorts all sorts of baby mess.

BertieBotts · 14/04/2023 12:00

Baby nappies leak all the time. I only wash on 60 if they have a tummy bug, otherwise washing at 40 is fine. Put some stain remover on, dry in sunlight.

A stain is just a stain, not bacteria. Nobody has died yet with me doing this.

Very solid potty training accidents sometimes I've just thrown away, but liquid baby poo, never.

TheAudie · 14/04/2023 12:00

OP, when there was massive poonamis over an outfit: I just binned them.

DontMakeMeShushYou · 14/04/2023 12:03

Another washable nappy user here who can assure you that poo-stained clothing/nappies will not harm your child in the slightest.

And as others have said, sunlight is your friend here.

Crocodilekneecaps · 14/04/2023 12:04

You’re being ridiculous

Gondala · 14/04/2023 12:05

I use Tesco stain remover in the pink bottle. Leave on overnight. Then wash at 40 with dettol laundry Cleanser. Never any stains.

viques · 14/04/2023 12:05

MonicaFaloolaGeller · 14/04/2023 11:48

Wash it. It’ll be fine. I pride myself on never throwing away clothes that got poonami’d and have managed some absolutely amazing rescues! Here’s a before and after I’m particularly proud of.

Wow, that looks as though your baby lives on turmeric!

VWHoliday · 14/04/2023 12:05

Meandfour · 14/04/2023 11:41

Well I don’t shit myself so no, I don’t only wear my underwear once.
If a baby item is absolutely covered in poo it goes in the bin. I have no desire to spend my time rinsing shit until it’s in a reasonable enough state to go in the washing machine. Nor am I going to wash a single baby vest on its own in the machine.

This is what I thought 😂

If I did shit myself I would chuck underwear away. I'm hoping this isn't going to happen though.

I probably chucked a couple out when they were a baby if it really gross.

SafferUpNorth · 14/04/2023 12:06

Good god, how wasteful chucking out an item of clothing every time it has some poo on it. Sounds like you need to learn how to deal with soiling and staining properly. Essential mum skills. This is my method - works for poo, blood, wine, soil/grass stains etc.

  1. Rinse off the poo under a cold tap. Dont just chuck it straight into the machine. If the thought makes you feel icky, wear marigolds. Rub it.
  2. Spray with Vanish or similar stain remover.
  3. Then in machine.
DarlingG · 14/04/2023 12:07

If it’s food or sick etc I will just give it a rinse and throw it in the machine but I’ve had a few vests I’ve had to peel off, more so since he’s been a toddler and I’ve learned my lesson that if I put it in a bucket to ‘soak’ I will go back and not want to do anything with it so I do just throw the really bad ones out but rarely

DedicatedFollowerOfFashion84 · 14/04/2023 12:07

This is shockingly wasteful… it also seems like you don’t have any idea how many times your child will heavily soil their clothing. There’s poo, there’s weaning, there’s playing outdoors, there’ll be toilet training accidents. Im baffled that you’d even ask this. Put the effort in and clean them properly.

Sherrystrull · 14/04/2023 12:07

I threw away a couple of items that were clearly beyond saving. Other than that I always washed and if the stain was horrible then it was worn for messing around in at home.

Gincan · 14/04/2023 12:07

I've definitely thrown out ones that were worn out/ too small anyway, but for anything decent they don't usually stain if you wash them immediately. Anything that does stain that i couldn't get out I'd just use at home or for pyjamas. They're still perfectly fine, I just wouldn't use them for going out in

CustardySergeant · 14/04/2023 12:09

Skyeheather · 14/04/2023 11:32

Buy a bottle of Dettol Laundry Cleanser and add a capful to the wash, it kills 99.9% of germs even on a low temperature. Job done!

I was just about to suggest the same thing.

Motnight · 14/04/2023 12:09

On the off chance that this is real....good luck with the school years Op!
