Is this a lot of food for an adult in one day

Adult female:

Breakfast - bowl of cereal with milk, apple juice
Lunch - chicken toastie with side salad and a few crisps, water
Snack (lunch was early) - beans on toast, 2 biscuits
Dinner - homemade chicken curry and rice with peas, water

Is this too much?

@Itakecreaminmycoffee
Is it possible that you would benefit from shocking your metabolism by eating a lot more for a while? After a horrific break-up in my 20s I barely ate anything for a few months and not only didn't become skeletally thin but actually seemed to be getting podgy. Eventually I took up running and normal eating again and settled down!
My feet are a 7-7 1/2 and I've never thought that was especially big for 5'9''. I have friends who take the same shoe size as us but are a lot shorter. My view is that 1000-2000 calories a day is not much for a woman of 5'3'', and is very unlikely to be enough for a tall woman (not far off the average height for a man). If you aren't able to lose weight on that amount then maybe you wouldn't much gain weight by eating more, and life would be a lot more pleasant??

I am in fairly poor shape, btw, have a flat chest, saggy thighs, far from a great body. If I were more muscular I'm sure I would weigh a good bit more. (And might not have so much fucking back pain, which does also prevent me from exercising.)

I do sometimes think maybe I’m not eating enough and my body has gone into “starvation mode” but on researching this (and the general consensus on MN) it seems to be that this is rubbish and there’s no such thing.

Maybe il try it for a while though and see as I am getting a bit miserable - it’s just hard mentally to get your head around eating more when you’re trying to lose weight 😞

NoDought · 14/04/2023 17:58

This isn’t a question anyone can answer without any background, depends on a lot of different components, primarily energy expenditure. What has prompted this question? Has someone said something?

Kteeb1 · 14/04/2023 18:52

You have had two lunches.

changeme4this · 14/04/2023 21:33

I would look at the sugar content as I’m trying to cut down and we were surprised how much was in our favourite tomato sauce, but yes portion sizes make a difference.

Personally I would be hungry an hour after eating cereal.

Whatafliberty · 14/04/2023 22:09

If you put on weight, yes it is. The beans on toast snack shouldn't be necessary.

TangledUpinBlu · 14/04/2023 22:22

Way too much, beans on toast is not a snack it's a meal.
I don't eat breakfast, would eat one of your lunches then dinner, so half what You're eating.
I'm never hungry in the morning so 2 meals a day Is enough for me.
I'm not scared of being hungry, being hungry for a few hours never killed anyone and can actually make you appreciate food more and make better food choices when you're body can actually crave what it needs.
I will admit I am recovering from eating disorders in my teens and early 20s but think I'm very healthy now.

NotPrettyInPink23 · 14/04/2023 22:24

I probably eat double that. I constantly eat. Plus about 200g chocolate a day.
I over eat but not massive over weight luckily

Matchymatchylemonscratchy · 14/04/2023 22:41

I’m going to put what I normally eat into a calorie counter. I’m amazed at how many people know. I just eat (and drink) low carb/sugar (lots of protein and vegetables) and it works.

Macinae · 14/04/2023 22:45

Sounds okay to me, though I don't think of beans on toast as a snack. Maybe a more substantial breakfast like eggs which means a later lunch? Or porridge and introducing some seeds for protein? I'm a big snacker around 3pm as I eat 12-8pm then fast, but tend to go for nuts, cheesestring, berries, ryvita, houmous. I've cut down on crisps as I'm a fiend! I've never been a breakfast fan so it works for me.

As others have said it depends on activity level, age, weight. If you're asking because you want to lose weight then I'd really recommend a nutritionist who can make sure you're losing weight in a healthy and realistic way.

mandlerparr · 14/04/2023 22:46

Don't ask the internet about your diet. The internet rarely knows what it is talking about. And it will trend towards making you feel bad.
Just start keeping a food diary and show it to your doctor. If any health issues are a problem, ask your doctor for a referral to a dietician/nutritionist (whichever is most appropriate) and show them your food diary.
Be honest in the diary and write down how much you actually had. I use an app, there are several.

inappropriateraspberry · 14/04/2023 22:54

Snack is quite large, but all dependant on what time you had your lunch and tea. I can easily eat that if I had an early lunch and knew dinner would be later than usual.

threatmatrix · 14/04/2023 23:12

If you are of normal weight then eat what you want. It would be a lot for me but then I don’t eat regularly enough.

Hummingbird10 · 14/04/2023 23:38

No, it’s not too much. The snack was healthy. It’s all healthy. Don’t worry about it and deffo don’t count the calories!

LaDamaDeElche · 15/04/2023 10:05

DedicatedFollowerOfFashion84 · 13/04/2023 19:37

I would say yes… there’s effectively an extra meal in there under the guise of calling it a snack… beans on toast followed by two biscuits is far more than a snack…

In Spain people eat 4/5 meals a day breakfast, almuerzo, lunch, merienda (mainly kids eat this) and dinner.

It was it a massive salad?

*but

BustyLaRoux · 15/04/2023 23:15

For me this would be a lot, but then I only need to walk past a pastry and I put on half a stone! I probably eat less than half that, but then I hate feeling full of food and would like to lose 10lbs. We’re all different. Different metabolisms, different stages of life, different activity levels…. If you’re happy with your weight and lifestyle then there’s no need to ask this question.

MummyBee40 · 17/04/2023 21:37

Yes it's too much if you lead a sedentry lifestyle, drive everywhere, have a mostly sitting down desk job etc.

If you are a very active person, have a busy job where you're constantly on the go and clocking up thousands (possibly tens of thousands) of steps per day then no. That's not too much food.

Without knowing your height, weight, job and lifestyle then it is impossible to tell.

Stewball01 · 10/05/2023 14:39

need to diet but now!!!!..... ugly great piggy.

Stewball01 · 10/05/2023 15:35

That was nice. My message halved.
I said to change the chicken thingy for the beans.
When I was in my 20's, 1,200 calories was for dieters. Now I'm in my 70's I have no idea. Good luck in any case.
