Is this a lot of food for an adult in one day

dogexplosion · 13/04/2023 19:33

Adult female:

Breakfast - bowl of cereal with milk, apple juice
Lunch - chicken toastie with side salad and a few crisps, water
Snack (lunch was early) - beans on toast, 2 biscuits
Dinner - homemade chicken curry and rice with peas, water

Is this too much?

Unfortunately if you want to be slim in your 40's+ (I want to get back in my size 10 jeans) you have to practically starve yourself!!

No you bloody don't.

SpaghettifingerFusillitoe · 13/04/2023 21:30

I’m 5’4, 10st trying to lose and have had today 2xcrumpets, a halloumi wrap, 3 bean chilli w/beans/guacamole/sour cream and a malt Easter bunny :) I’ve done 45mins of high impact aerobics and walked 18k steps tho so it’s about 1300 net

Speak for yourself Dragon - this is my experience and lots of others too if you read the weight loss pages - many, many women once they hit 40 and become peri really struggle to lose weight. If you don't without severely restricting calories - good for you.

Once I reach my goal weight I will slowly increase my calories to work out what I can eat to maintain. This is mine, and many others reality.

PeonyFairy · 13/04/2023 21:34

It's the order that's bothering people.
If you had the beans on toast for supper that would be less sinful.
Typical day for me
Oats, seeds and milk
Salad with samosa
Chicken stir fry and noodles.

It's the evening snacks that let me down, I've had wine, crisps, a magnum and a bar of chocolate tonight which is typical.

SpaghettifingerFusillitoe · 13/04/2023 21:38

@PeonyFairy ooh but the evening snacks sound so lovely I’m very envious

Littleguggi · 13/04/2023 21:40

I don't think it's a lot, but depends on how active you are, your current BMI and whether you are trying to change your weight in any way. I typically eat around that much if not more most days.

Curseofthenation · 13/04/2023 21:40

It's absolutely fine without the beans on toast 'snack'.

I am pushing 60. I am slim but not skinny. I have never had to starve myself. If I eat too much crap and drink too much wine I put on weight, of course. But if I eat a normal diet with a few unhealthy treats I am fine, even with an underactive thyroid.

You said you are eating 1000 calories a day. Maybe OK in the very short term if you want to lose weight quickly, but it is not healthy, especially as you get older. No one needs to starve themselves to remain a healthy weight.

LemonDrizzle32 · 13/04/2023 21:43

Posts like this are pointless because as many commenters have pointed out, this could be anything from 1000 to 5000 calories depending on portion size, specific food products, and your honestly. And no one knows how much food is too much because you could be either very tint and petite, or massively fat. You could be an athletez or bed bound. Nobody knows!!

Also these posts get flooded by women competing over who eats the least and who is thr most appalled by someone have 2 lunches.
"I could never eat that much! I'd be full after the beans! That's so much sugar! That's a lot of food! I can only manage a breath of fresh air and a coffee, and then I'm full till Christmas!"

My sister is 60 and is as slim as Catherine Wales (and looks fab dressed up). She never gains weight. She generally has a cooked breakfast with toast, a sandwich and crisps for lunch, and a normal dinner.

She doesn't sit down much and is always on the go. But she has had that metabolism since she was a child.

Itakecreaminmycoffee · 13/04/2023 21:24

Why do you ask OP? Are you trying to lose weight?

Today, which was a typical day for me I've had:

breakfast: 3 x coffees with skimmed milk
lunch: nothing
dinner: Chicken marinated in Nando's seasoning, jacket potato and a "massive" salad. Low fat yoghurt and fruit salad for dessert.
lots and lots of water

this is around 1000 calories which is very low but I'm in my 40's and currently trying to lose half a stone after having lost almost two stone since mid-January. It's really hard to lose weight when you hit your 40's. Eating like you have today I would probably be gaining weight. Unfortunately if you want to be slim in your 40's+ (I want to get back in my size 10 jeans) you have to practically starve yourself!! 😡

What utter twaddle.

I'm 42 and a size 8/10 (I was a 16/18 10 years ago).

I rarely eat less than 1,800 calories a day, some days it can be up to 2,500.

You are:
A) eating the wrong foods (if you are hungry all the time)
B) not moving/doing enough exercise

rumpsteak · 13/04/2023 21:47

Depends on the size and age of the adult female and the activity levels. It may be way too much or not enough......

You are very lucky to be 42, eat 1800 calories a day and be a size 8.

You do realise everybody is different? I categorically would not lose weight eating 1800 calories a day - I've tried it - I only started losing 1-2lbs per week when lowering to 1000-1200 per day - and yes, I exercise daily too.

LemonDrizzleyCake · 13/04/2023 21:58

It's not just about the quantity it's about the quality surely?

There is barely any fruit or veg.

Apple juice- full of sugar- can't really be counted as a portion
Peas- just about a portion of veg
Side salad - probably not a portion unless it was a large bowlful
Bean on toast - a portion yes, but sugary.

I mean this seriously, have you had your thyroid function checked? It is very common for it to go awry and this can make it hard to lose weight if not treated.

OnlyFannys · 13/04/2023 21:58

My diet today would give most mumsnetters a stroke:
Breakfast: 2 chocolate hobnobs (terrifying calories I've heard) and a packet of Walkers french fries
Lunch: half a portion of loaded cheese and bacon fries and a stolen chicken nugget from DCs plate
Dinner: 3 cheese strings, half an easter egg (also stolen) and 3 more terrifying hobnobs

I usually eat a lot of "massive" salads but god help me it is week 2 of the school holidays and I had to endure a day at soft play

Mumsnet is obsessed with thyroid function.

I don't eat 1800 cals any day and certainly would eat less to lose weight.

Maybe swap the hobnobs for vodka? But possibly not the breakfast ones.

I would feel fat and crap on that.

Can't see the pleasure in eating like that at all.

Minierme · 13/04/2023 22:02

Totally depends on portion size but I’d guess it’s round about 2000 calories so would be too much for me (but I’m short).

Lots of women have thyroid issues, it is really common so always worth getting checked as it often goes undiagnosed.

Matchymatchylemonscratchy · 13/04/2023 22:11

It’s four main meals and bad choices to boot. If I ate like that I’d be a stone heavier than I am.
