Are emojis only for old people?

I was babysitting my niece yesterday and we got onto a discussion about mobile phones etc. She then said her and her friends only really use symbols when texting. Things like: :) <3
These I remember doing years and years ago, before emojis came along.
I asked her about emojis and she said no one really uses them anymore, that she only really likes the heart ones and never a laughing face, only the crying with laughter face.
I felt pretty old after that conversation, I’d it just me and I didn’t notice?

I don't think so. My DC use them, and so do my nieces and nephews.. and all their mates... All under 35... Some 20-25. Not sure about teens/tweens. Don't really know many now.

PollyAmour · 13/04/2023 09:55

Didn't typing the symbols automatically convert the text into an emoji?

CallMeMabel · 13/04/2023 10:00

According to my 12 year old DD they're only used by old people and totally cringe. Apparently the old colon/bracket is acceptable but not emojis. I still love them though.😊

Noorandapples · 13/04/2023 10:03

Embrace the cringe, it's always worse to be trying to be young. Besides being embarrassing can be great fun!

WheelsUp · 13/04/2023 10:05

My 20yo never uses emojis any more. Her generation like the old style ones like :-)
Funnily enough about 8 years ago her friends were impressed that I used emojis correctly in my texts to her 🤔
personally I love emojis so won't stop using them

Mrsjayy · 13/04/2023 10:06

Bless then they think they did it first 😃 I think it is to do with being retro that they use the symbols , my dd is In her 30s ill let her know that she is old 😉

NameChange647 · 13/04/2023 10:07

I think 💀 is the new emoji for young people instead of 😂 I see it on tik tok all the time.

VeronicaTimeTurner · 13/04/2023 10:08

My late teens/early 20s use them 🤷🏻‍♀️

AlltheFs · 13/04/2023 10:08

My husband works for one of the new online banks and emojis are mandatory in their internal comms system- he has been told off for not using enough…..it’s a company run by younger people (he’s knocking 50).
So they are alive and well in that sector!

emmylousings · 13/04/2023 10:09

Yeah according to my DS, emojis are for old people and I notice he doesn't use them, but does the old style, like others have said. I don't care though, me and my old mates like them!

SunshineGeorgie · 13/04/2023 10:10

Define 'old' ?

JimmyDurham · 13/04/2023 10:11

Some of us are so old we never got into emojis in the first place.

Probably about 25 !

StrawHatOnTheParcelShelf · 13/04/2023 10:17

My late teens ridicule me for using them and the original text shorthand like 'lol'. Very 'boomer' according to them.

IWantToBeACat · 13/04/2023 10:18

My 14 year old uses about a million of them per message. Definitely more emojis than words. 😂

I don't mind kids being kids but I can't stand this Boomer rubbish I had to have a word with my youngest about it !

PuffinsRocks · 13/04/2023 10:21

I was having a similar conversation with DH this morning, and was thinking that emojis in a few years are going to be like txtspk is now. No one uses "wot r u up 2" type messages nowadays and I think emojis will go the same way as younger people find new ways to make communication "their own" if you see what I mean.

Pah! Bet they don’t even know how old ‘boomers’ are.

BillytheMountain · 13/04/2023 10:26

CornishGem1975 · 13/04/2023 10:26

My teens don't use them very often.

dot, dot, dot, dot, dot, dash

Justwanttodonothingtoday · 13/04/2023 10:28

So maybe it’s just the very young teens 🤔She also used loads of words I’d never heard of…like she said she only really texts emojis to her mum or cousin as they’re quite ‘Dry’ wtf 😂She also says things are ‘Crusty’ I have no idea
