Are emojis only for old people?

I was babysitting my niece yesterday and we got onto a discussion about mobile phones etc. She then said her and her friends only really use symbols when texting. Things like: :) <3
These I remember doing years and years ago, before emojis came along.
I asked her about emojis and she said no one really uses them anymore, that she only really likes the heart ones and never a laughing face, only the crying with laughter face.
I felt pretty old after that conversation, I’d it just me and I didn’t notice?

Didn't typing the symbols automatically convert the text into an emoji?

I don’t think most devices do that anymore, that only seems to happen in Outlook on my laptop. Android devices now have a whole menu of the old emoticon symbols so you can use them really quickly (I have an iPhone but DD was showing me on her phone)

Pah! Bet they don’t even know how old ‘boomers’ are.

Yep! Even the oldest people who grew up with l33tspeak via BBS, pre-internet, would be Gen X rather than boomers.

Pandorapitstop · 15/06/2023 17:16

Someone on here recently said that they thought 🙄meant “ see text above”. She was asked to please come back and tell us of instances when she’d texted thinking that was the case. Don’t think she did though.

TrueScrumptious · 15/06/2023 17:20

My early-mid 20s DDs wouldn’t use emojis now.

Kitkatcatflap · 15/06/2023 17:58

I am in my 50s and have never used emojis but I do love a gif. So according to my teenagers, GIFS are 'cringe' and only old people (meaning me) use them.

MrJi · 15/06/2023 18:00

My teens (16 and 18) use them, as do their friends.

FinanceLPlates · 15/06/2023 18:06

Ha! I thought I was an old fogey because I still use the old style :)
Turns out I’m the avant-garde!

Flibbertigibbettytoes · 15/06/2023 18:09

People new to the resources always over-use compared to those more familiar with them / who grew up with them. Like when it became possible to do colour in emails etc and people went a bit crazy then most stopped

BanditsOnTheHorizon · 15/06/2023 18:13

I think the fact you called it a 'mobile' phone rather than just a phone means you're old in the younger generations eyes 🤣🤣

GameofPhones · 15/06/2023 18:16

Emojis do look a bit childish - so not 'dry' in the latest speak. What do they cost to send?

SemperIdem · 15/06/2023 18:19

I’ve heard this.

I suppose the beauty of being old is that you don’t care in the slightest whether a 12 year old thinks you’re cool or not, so I must indeed be old!

AceofPentacles · 15/06/2023 18:39

My 12yo thinks emojis are "zesty" (camp) and doesn't use them

sunshineandtea · 15/06/2023 19:04

I'm 42 and love ❤️ and emoji

sunshineandtea · 15/06/2023 19:04

*an FFS 🤦🏼‍♀️

2oreosandmilk · 15/06/2023 19:26

I use them.. mostly the laughing face or 😫 this one if I’m stressing. I’m 34. My 12 yo DD only really uses 😭 for crying laughing or 💀 to implied she’s ‘dead’ from laughing I think?!

I am very very uncool and old though according to her. Though 4yo DD things I’m the best thing since sliced bread (and has no idea what an emoji is).
