Register baby name, ARS or AS?

HappyButHangry · 13/04/2023 01:16

DH will be registering our baby's name tomorrow

My maiden name begins with R. DH's last name begins with S. New DC is Alice.
We had always said my maiden name would be all our children's middle name because it is sentimental to me. We didn't know new baby would be called Alice until we saw her. (we were stuck between Alice and something else)

Anyway her initials will be ARS if we give her my maiden name as her middle name. And I feel like it's too close to arse 🍑 and I can't bring myself to register her with that name now as her initials will be ARS. AIBU?

Why don't you give her a middle name? Louisa? Jemima? Anything that starts with a consonant would work.

Or - two middle names? ARMS, AJRS... the options are endless.

I think ars means art in Latin so just go with that Smile

mathanxiety · 13/04/2023 01:52

Second the advice already given -
Alice Elizabeth R S
Alice Catherine R S
Alice Francesca R S
....

Thanks all for your suggestions. Feeling far too under pressure to come up with an additional middle name overnight..

Sleep deprived too right now 😅 I am in awe of all new parents everywhere!

Can you reschedule the appointment?

I don’t think you should leave out your maiden name if you’ve always wanted it.

I always thinking that no middle name seems like the parents just couldn’t be bothered to think of one!

Can you use the other name you were choosing between as the second middle name?

Can2022getanyworse · 13/04/2023 05:14

Stick with ARS.

I can't think of a single time anyone uses kids' initials in any other capacity than sounding them out like you have, 'to see if they match'.

teezletangler · 13/04/2023 05:15

Until you pointed it out, I couldn't even work out what the issue was. I think ARS is fine.

Tesoroxx · 13/04/2023 05:25

If you're botherd by Ars thinking arse surely As bothers you as Ass personally I don't think either are an issue kids can make up a mean nickname regardless and having your maiden name is something important to you

FeetOnly · 13/04/2023 05:42

Seriously? Have you never been to school? Yes, they sound them out. Then when they realise your initials spell something (especially a rude word) it becomes your nickname or insult of choice for the rest of your time at school.

That's without the school/uni/work email systems which insist on using your initials and can't be changed because if they change yours, everyone would want theirs changed.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 13/04/2023 05:46

My kids only use their first and last initials at school so would just write the equivalent of AS. Just stick with the original plan and maybe don't buy her anything personalised with initials when she's school age.

Blinkery · 13/04/2023 05:49

Add another name (not with an E letter as an anagram just draws attention).

nomoredriving · 13/04/2023 05:59

I didn't see the issue, it's fine.

Could you use the other name you were thinking of, as you obviously like the name if it was in your final two?

Magaluf · 13/04/2023 06:09

No, don’t call her ARS. Stick another middle name in. Reschedule iif you need more time.

Jengnr · 13/04/2023 06:12

I deliberately swerved A names to avoid this exact scenario. Stick another middle name in, as suggested.

potatowhale · 13/04/2023 06:13

She needs a middle name

PilatesWife · 13/04/2023 06:20

As per previous poster. School emails, name badges, work initials and so on will all have the abbreviation and not everyone will be so kind as to think of a nice meaning for ARS.

Add another name in.

sleepylittlebunnies · 13/04/2023 06:22

I would pick an extra middle name, especially as you say all your children will have your maiden name as a middle name.

When I worked retail we used to sign refunds with 2 shop assistant’s initials, my mate and I used to have a laugh doing ours together as it looked a bit rude. In nursing we sign our initials a lot. It wouldn’t worry me having those initials but it would bother my teens.

FannythePinkFlamingo · 13/04/2023 06:25

My parents had the same dilemma. I was going to be called Adam Robert <S surname> if I was a boy. Fortunately I was a girl and they'd realised that ARS as initials wasn't ideal. My girls name is nothing like that.

liveforsummer · 13/04/2023 06:28

My dc are 10 and 13 and it's take. This thread for me to think about what my DC's full initials are. Never ever used them. I also work in a school and at no pony have seen just the DC's initials written down. The example of nurses etc of initialling documents I've never seen anyone use their middle name and I don't either - she'd just use AS surely?! The suggestion of a second middle name is a good one if you're not going to be able to get it out your mind though

JustAnotherDayWorkingAtHome · 13/04/2023 06:29

It wouldn’t even occur to me that ARS was an issue. I personally think you are way over thinking this.

RememberingGoodTimes · 13/04/2023 06:32

How often do you write your full initials like that?

I'm mid thirties and can't remember a single time I've written my initials together like that.

FeetOnly · 13/04/2023 06:33

I personally think you are way over thinking this.

And if you had initials which spell a similarly "rude" word, you would realise she isn't over thinking this.
