To ask for the room to be turned down?

Currently on a uk holiday with DH and young DC. Staying in a 4* well known chain hotel. We are here for 5 nights total. Obviously it's common now to be told that your room will not be made up daily as it used to be in the past and I completely understand that is to do with environmental issues re towels, they did say that if we would like the rooms to be done then we just need to ask. However I do like the beds to be made etc when staying away from home. We are currently on day 4, so far I've asked twice if the room can be done. I said that I don't actually want the towels changed as we hadn't used them all anyway but I would like the beds to be done, we've run out of toilet roll, run out of clean mugs and would it be possible to have a couple more sachets of coffee.
The first time I asked it just wasn't don't at all. The second time I asked I came back to the room and new towels had been put in the room (which I specifically had said we didn't need) but none of the other stuff had been done.

We've saved really hard for this little holiday as we can't afford to go abroad at the moment, not that it's relevant but we are paying over £100 a night and that's just for accommodation not including parking or breakfast, so are we really being that unreasonable to request new toilet rolls, mugs etc?

Sorry for not replying sooner I fell asleep! @viques I'm not sure what you mean, I literally changed my username for this thread as I didn't want it linked to my normal one but this is the only post I've made with this name.
I am going to make a complaint this morning to the manager so will update when I've spoken to them.

Absolutely you make a complaint.
Ask them if it’s company policy to make their guests feel stressed and unhappy as that is how they have made you feel, and have ruined your much anticipated holiday.
That loo paper and a clean room should be an absolute basic, and you will be seeking a full refund for your ruined holiday.
Also point out that there was no one at reception or any housekeeping staff to assist you. There should always be front of house staff.
Disgraceful service, and I would leave very poor reviews.

Qilin · 13/04/2023 08:46

I'm now out of toilet roll for the night despite asking at reception again this evening and being promised the room would be sorted. Let's just hope the kids don't need the toilet in the night!

Call down to reception on the in room phone and ask for some to be brought up straight away. To have basic amenities should be the bare minimum expectation tbh.

I think they rely on guests getting fed up and coming down themselves for the loo roll.

I would be speaking to the manager and if no joy take it to the area manager

Because I shouldn’t have to? I go in holiday to get away from the every day drudgery. And I don’t pay £100 a night to stay in my own house.

Making a bed is hardly "drudgery". Maybe if you had to strip it and remake it but not just smoothing the bottom sheet and pulling up the duvet which takes about a minute!

nomoredriving · 13/04/2023 09:00

mydogisthebest · 13/04/2023 08:45

I always say I don't want housekeeping going into my room to make my bed if I am staying more than one night.

What is the point exactly? I am quite capable of making my bed and it doesn't take any time does it to smooth the bottom sheet and pull the duvet up?

If I need coffee or loo roll I ask for them at the desk.

Well that's you, but I expect my bed to ge made up and stock replaced, it's what I'm paying for.

McSlowburn · 13/04/2023 09:02

YADNBU!!

I think that's awful - making the bed is an absolute minimum requirement regardless of cost.

I would definitely ask for money off if you haven't paid in advance. If you already have then I would write to head office/customer service as soon as you can.

Yes, exactly. I want to be able to lock the hotel room door and go out, and return to my room knowing no one has accessed our belongings in the meantime. If you’re comfortable having hotel staff in your room daily, you must not travel with anything valuable enough to lose.

electriclight · 13/04/2023 09:16

YADNBU.

I would expect all of that as standard without needing to ask for it.

However, I understand that they may be short staffed and told you that you'd need to ask - but you have, several times, so this is now wildly unacceptable.

If their staffing levels are this catastrophic, they need to reflect that in the price with a generous discount.

Good luck talking to the manager this morning. I hope they step up for the remainder of your stay.

nomoredriving · 13/04/2023 09:37

@mydogisthebest I'm naturally much more trusting of people than you obviously. Never had an issue and very glad I'm that way.

Love going away and enjoying as much free time as possible, getting away from the normal drudge and yes that includes making the bed and checking supplies.

I wouldn’t expect the beds to be made, not sure why you can’t do that yourself as it takes minutes. But would expect things like toilet roll etc to be topped “

I would! We stayed in an old, tatty Travelodge recently at £26 for us both per night. They made the beds.

AlltheFs · 13/04/2023 09:43

That’s appaling. I’d be making a complaint and leaving them an absolutely dire review on every review option going.

I don’t require clean towels, but beds made, bins emptied, supplies replenished is a daily minimum. I get that in a £40 B&B I use near my grandmas nursing home and the £300 hotel I like as a treat.

holibobs3 · 13/04/2023 09:49

So I spoke to management. I explained that the towels had been left but nothing else done. He actually said he personally had been in to our room and done everything yesterday. I really wish I'd have taken pictures because absolutely nothing in the room had been done so I don't know if he is lying or if he genuinely thinks putting towels at the bottom of the bed and doing nothing else is good enough. He very reluctantly gave us £100 refund. I'm still not very happy to be honest mainly just because of his attitude this morning.

Sounds like the Travelodge I recently stayed in. Wasn't paying £10 for their shitty breakfast - had some gorgeous breakfasts in the town instead. Also wasn't paying for the wifi in the room and had to get my own tea/coffee/milk extras from reception.

gamerchick · 13/04/2023 09:55

Well you know what kind of review to leave now, don't you?

That's poor, but glad you got a refund, use it to treat yourself/family.

PollyAmour · 13/04/2023 10:00

Contact their headquarters, and leave a bad review. Even Travelodge is better than the service you've experienced.

zingally · 13/04/2023 10:01

Your title and your actual post are about different things.

A turn down service is done in the evening, and is something I've only ever seen on cruises or in 5* hotels (and even then, not all of them).

But what you've discussed is a perfectly reasonable request, and I'd say a standard one for virtually all hotels.

She accepted this point (about terminology) somewhere back on page 1 of the thread ….

Ok, good for you?
If I’m paying to stay in a hotel I want my bed made.

retrosteamband · 13/04/2023 10:15

Did they sort out the refills as well?

AskMeMore · 13/04/2023 10:15

If it takes a minute then no big deal for the hotel to do.
I mean washing up a glass after having a drink at the bar takes a minute, I still would not want to do it.

AskMeMore · 13/04/2023 10:18

The only place I have ever stayed where they do not make the beds is a youth hostel.
