To ask for the room to be turned down?

Currently on a uk holiday with DH and young DC. Staying in a 4* well known chain hotel. We are here for 5 nights total. Obviously it's common now to be told that your room will not be made up daily as it used to be in the past and I completely understand that is to do with environmental issues re towels, they did say that if we would like the rooms to be done then we just need to ask. However I do like the beds to be made etc when staying away from home. We are currently on day 4, so far I've asked twice if the room can be done. I said that I don't actually want the towels changed as we hadn't used them all anyway but I would like the beds to be done, we've run out of toilet roll, run out of clean mugs and would it be possible to have a couple more sachets of coffee.
The first time I asked it just wasn't don't at all. The second time I asked I came back to the room and new towels had been put in the room (which I specifically had said we didn't need) but none of the other stuff had been done.

We've saved really hard for this little holiday as we can't afford to go abroad at the moment, not that it's relevant but we are paying over £100 a night and that's just for accommodation not including parking or breakfast, so are we really being that unreasonable to request new toilet rolls, mugs etc?

YANBU to expect daily housekeeping, but did you use the correcr term with them? 'Turn down' isn't available at all places and it's when they come in for the second time that day to prepare your room for when you return for bed. Cosy lights, heated bed, little small dessert/drink, etc

AskMeMore · 13/04/2023 00:49

I would expect the bed to be made, cleaned and tidied daily.

pishkashante · 13/04/2023 01:20

Can’t believe the responses you’ve had!

I’ve stayed in a lot of hotels, including with work, and I would absolutely expect bed to be made and new mugs every day!

Sometimes we stay at the cheap and cheerful Campanile at £40 a night because it’s convenient for caring for parents and even then we get these services!

Maybe you could ask for a volunteer from the Boys Brigade to pop in to sort out your issues OP.

(remarkably similar style. I am not sure about another thread too,but the OP seems to have given up on that one.)

cornfleurs · 13/04/2023 01:40

This sounds very unusual for a Radisson

mathanxiety · 13/04/2023 02:34

It's possible you weren't clear about the towels/ beds. It's better to explicitly say what you want done and leave the stuff you don't want done out of the conversation altogether.

I'd leave a written list too, instead of verbal instructions -
What we want daily - Room 123:
Beds made
Mugs replaced
Etc

watcherintherye · 12/04/2023 22:17

What is a turn down service?

Google not working for you?

Murdoch1949 · 13/04/2023 04:51

I'm staggered that this chain is not making beds, cleaning bathroom, hoovering, dusting, replenishing consumables daily. Does this happen at all chains now?

Blueblell · 13/04/2023 05:06

I would expect the room the be done everyday in a radisson type hotel, but not clean towels as you said.

begoneday · 13/04/2023 05:09

Only in England would it be deemed unreasonable to expect a bed to be made for £100 a night. What exactly are the hotel paying their staff to do ?!

merrymelodies · 13/04/2023 05:13

Beds should be made, bins emptied, loo roll replaced, rooms tidied daily as a matter of course. Anything else in a hotel that wishes to do business is simply unacceptable.

mountainmother · 13/04/2023 05:37

You are not asking for the world, OP.

Ffs, I am so over services that are just not that anymore and use any excuse to give a shoddy, cheap, poor service. I've noticed it hugely now Covid can be used as an excuse in dome way or other.

They're a hotel, not an airbnb.

If this is Radisson's policy now, they're off my booking list.

nomoredriving · 13/04/2023 05:54

You're not being unreasonable at all. They also said just ask and you have.

StoppinBy · 13/04/2023 05:54

I would ring the after hours number for the toilet paper.

After that they will likely do a bit better to avoid after hours calls for things that could easily be done during thr day.

This is perfect!

What is a turn down service?

Folding back the covers at night and leaving a chocolate on your pillow.

Thaone · 13/04/2023 07:11

One of the best things about a hotel stay (compared to self catering apartment) is coming back from a day out to a nicely made bed, wiped down bathroom and replenished tea/coffee etc.

Definitely not BU to expect this in a 4* hotel!

givenheranextrakey · 13/04/2023 07:34

I can never get my head around this ...

If you booked for one night at £100 your room would have been cleaned, beds changed, clean towels, new supplies etc.

So why don't they do that every day if you pay £100 per night?

They would if it was a different person in there each night!

McT123 · 13/04/2023 07:41

I run a small B&B. During Covid we did not enter guests rooms but of course checked whether they needed mugs, coffee, towels, loo roll etc.

Since things have opened up, we still find that some people would prefer that we don't go into their room so we ask them whether they would like the room serviced.

The hotel that the OP is staying in seems to do the same thing but has not followed through on the offer to service the rooms.

YANBU and in your position, I would complain.

holibobs3 · 13/04/2023 07:45

Sorry for not replying sooner I fell asleep! @viques I'm not sure what you mean, I literally changed my username for this thread as I didn't want it linked to my normal one but this is the only post I've made with this name.
I am going to make a complaint this morning to the manager so will update when I've spoken to them.

Terrible service. I would ask for a full daily clean now. Clearly their ad hoc approach does not work.

watcherintherye · 12/04/2023 22:17

What is a turn down service?

They come to the room, turn the lights down, literally pull back the bedding, place a chocolate on the pillow and place slippers by the bed. I absolutely would not expect a turn down service in a Raddison.

I would expect daily beds made, bins emptied, supplies replenished.

FairAcre · 13/04/2023 08:36

i stayed in a hotel recently and there was no tea or coffee due to ‘eco - no waste policy’. I am all for helping saving the planet but It’s hard to start the day without a cup of tea. It strikes me that hotels are cutting costs on this pretext and it’s the consumer who is suffering. Not being supplied with loo rolls and emptying bins is shocking. It doesn’t matter how little the hotel costs. You might as well go camping.

Qilin · 13/04/2023 08:44

One of the benefits of going on holiday to a nice hotel is to leave in the morning and return later in the day to a freshly made bed, tidied room, empty bins, washed cups, fresh water, etc. and tbh I do like a clean towel too, even though I know we shouldn't - my main reason for that is they often don't have chance to dry between uses when your using air on, etc.

mydogisthebest · 13/04/2023 08:45

I always say I don't want housekeeping going into my room to make my bed if I am staying more than one night.

What is the point exactly? I am quite capable of making my bed and it doesn't take any time does it to smooth the bottom sheet and pull the duvet up?

If I need coffee or loo roll I ask for them at the desk.
