To ask for the room to be turned down?

Currently on a uk holiday with DH and young DC. Staying in a 4* well known chain hotel. We are here for 5 nights total. Obviously it's common now to be told that your room will not be made up daily as it used to be in the past and I completely understand that is to do with environmental issues re towels, they did say that if we would like the rooms to be done then we just need to ask. However I do like the beds to be made etc when staying away from home. We are currently on day 4, so far I've asked twice if the room can be done. I said that I don't actually want the towels changed as we hadn't used them all anyway but I would like the beds to be done, we've run out of toilet roll, run out of clean mugs and would it be possible to have a couple more sachets of coffee.
The first time I asked it just wasn't don't at all. The second time I asked I came back to the room and new towels had been put in the room (which I specifically had said we didn't need) but none of the other stuff had been done.

We've saved really hard for this little holiday as we can't afford to go abroad at the moment, not that it's relevant but we are paying over £100 a night and that's just for accommodation not including parking or breakfast, so are we really being that unreasonable to request new toilet rolls, mugs etc?

I would leave a dreadful review.

I would email head office too.

The manager lying would piss me off so much much.

I think to tell you they won't touch the room for 5 days is a joke, unless asked.

A real stinker of a review would be what they would get.

What is a turn down service?

Someone comes in to your room in the evening and turns down the corners of the bed covers so you can slip in under them with minimal effort 😄. They also leave a little mint or chocolate on your pillow for an evening snack.

I've only ever experienced this on a cruise, on the rare occasions I've stayed in a 5 star hotel this wasn't offered.

Gloopyhoop · 13/04/2023 10:25

I work at a holiday inn express and while I see £100 per night as expensive, where I am (near a motorway junction), £100 is about the standard rate. I'd be really disappointed as a guest and staff member if you'd asked us to do something so simple and it wasn't done. Even staff who aren't housekeeping pitch in with making beds/sofa beds! Their communication can't be that great or the staff can't be bothered.

anunlikelyseahorse · 13/04/2023 10:27

I haven't been to a Rad for years, but if they still do a questionnaire about you stay fill it out. Most hotels have a feedback form in the information file you get in your room.
Having the bed made is just a basic function of a hotel.

nomoredriving · 13/04/2023 09:37

@mydogisthebest I'm naturally much more trusting of people than you obviously. Never had an issue and very glad I'm that way.

Love going away and enjoying as much free time as possible, getting away from the normal drudge and yes that includes making the bed and checking supplies.

Where did I say it was because I don't trust people? I just don't see the need for my bed to be made when I can do it myself. I would hate to be that lazy and entitled.

I have had cleaners re-arrange my toiletries and that annoyed me

mydogisthebest · 13/04/2023 10:31

Singularity82 · 13/04/2023 10:13

Ok, good for you?
If I’m paying to stay in a hotel I want my bed made.

I am obviously not as lazy and entitled as you. Making a bed doesn't even take a minute.

KimberleyClark · 13/04/2023 10:32

YANBU. We’ve just had a two night break in a non chain 4* country house hotel and the room was made up on the 2nd day, coffee/tea/biscuits replenished etc.

mydogisthebest · 13/04/2023 10:33

The lack of toilet roll is not good but you must have known it was running low so why not just ask for some?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 13/04/2023 10:36

I spoke to management ... He actually said he personally had been in to our room and done everything yesterday

Oh dear, oh dear; how unimaginative, dishonest, and frankly insulting to the intelligence Angry
At least you got some sort of refund though, and if this spreads I'd expect more to demand the same and to leave appropriate reviews

Interestingly I've yet to see it mentioned on hotel websites - endless flannel about the excellence of their service of course, but not this

nomoredriving · 13/04/2023 10:43

@mydogisthebest do you know how to filter posts? If so why are you unable to see that OP asked for toilet roll? You're not lazy and entitled (according to your own self praise 🙄), but you are just trying to belittle OPs points. Carey on, you're making yourself look incredibly foolish and defensive.

This…
Email head office now while you are still there.
The lack of basic amenities and no cleaning is disgraceful but the manager lying is the icing in the cake.
Ask if they think that is acceptable for guests in their hotels to be treated so badly and lied to.
And tell them you will be leaving a very accurate review which will not be favourable

No manager has cleaned that room….

It will come down really to what they promote as their service. £100 per night isn't particularly expensive and I wouldn't expect rooms to be done in the way you've said

Rubbish

@mydogisthebest do you think you get some kind of hotel halo for being sooooooooooooooo "good"? You're just sounding like a right twat now Grin

We are just back from a UK hotel. We were asked did we want the room cleaned we said no (only 3 nights).
They did say to let them know if we wanted tea/coffee/water etc.

I pulled the duvets up in the mornings and the towels were hung up to dry. Not really anything else needed to be done.

I said to DH getting the bed turned down had gone out of fashion finally!

If we had been there for a week or longer I would have asked for it to be cleaned at least once

Qilin · 13/04/2023 13:16

If you’re comfortable having hotel staff in your room daily, you must not travel with anything valuable enough to lose.

We always use the in-room safe, using a pin lock number.

How ingenious! Imagine making it that simple to store things like electronics, passports etc in such a safe manner.

I mean it's not like hotel staff can't or won't access your room and steal if you just don't ask for a clean.

I don't think people go to hotels much if they haven't discovered this marvellous trick.

itsgettingweird · 13/04/2023 13:43

I'd make my own bed. It's quicker than walking to reception to ask someone else to do it!

If you want clean mugs usually if you leave them outside the door they'll replace. And also nowadays all the hotels I stay in have a door hanger to request a clean you leave out rather than doing it automatically.

I usually leave a note for whoever comes round saying - no towels or towels please, or coffee please. Or don't worry about beds. Or can you run hoover around?!

They've always done it and I tip the cleaner well (well I would leave £20 for a 5-7 night stay which seems good to me?).

Ds and I stay in a lot of hotels and even when we've stayed in days inn they've been as good as a holiday inn.

I suppose as you're walking past reception on your way out you could just ask them? Or use the in room phone? Why on earth would you make a separate journey?

itsgettingweird · 13/04/2023 14:03

Yeah I guess!

Ds and I travel because he's an athlete. So we tend to just leave to go to competition for the day and return to sleep. Reception is usually busy so we don't tend to stop and ask and just do as I said above.

I've only really ever used reception specifically!!!!!

strawberryicecreamice · 13/04/2023 14:11

When I worked at travel lodge a stay over would be clean mugs, spoons, tea/coffee etc, empty the bin and towels if wanted. Never made the bed.

strawberryicecreamice · 13/04/2023 14:12

Oh and toilet rolls.

user1492757084 · 13/04/2023 14:36

I, personally, hate the beds to be made.
I like the sun to get into the bedding to air it out and I dislike tucked in sheets etc. They are very uncomfortable but I am quite tall.
I love the new way of not servicing rooms daily; it is more private and saves energy.
My luxury holiday in a 4* would be to arrive to a spotless room and then be left alone with my thoughts, my books, my partner and kids but to be able to replace milk, coffee, loo rolls etc promptly.

HaggisBurger · 13/04/2023 14:51

I’ve read a lot of odd things on MN but the idea that “sun” gets into a unmade bed “to air it out” has to be one of the most nuts ideas I’ve come across.

Favour an unmade bed by all means. But I’m not quite sure that could happen @user1492757084 …😂
