Does this help prevent hunger?
im completely carb addicted and it’s making me feel awful

When I was maintaining low carb strictly my appetite was massively reduced and my food cravings went away.

Comby · 12/04/2023 19:12

Yes, I felt great. Only did it for a bit though, to lose weight. I recommend The Fast 800 recipes.

Luckydog7 · 12/04/2023 19:14

Yes it works.

However...
This is a diet you need to commit too. It works by depleting your sugar/glucose reserves so you start using fat for energy instead. this process takes several days and if you eat any quantity of sugar/carbs you will bounce right out and need to start from scratch, this will maje you feel awful too, switching back and forth.

Stick to it, and you will find that the first 5-7 days is tough but easier and easier after that. I notice a big physical difference after about 10 days, visibly less bloated looking and feeling, hunger reduces. Skin improves. Give it a go and see if it works for you.

Keto was amazing for me. No cravings and looked chiselled with visible abs after just a couple of months. I also had more energy and better mood overall. You do really have to stick at it to stay in ketosis.

@Comby what made you stop out of interest?

AncientBallerina · 12/04/2023 19:17

Do you get that keto breath? I’ve noticed it on someone with an eating disorder- I would like to try keto but I don’t want that to happen. Won’t go into why but it would be upsetting in this house.

Comby · 12/04/2023 19:18

Experienced a 'clean' high. Never understood what that meant until I went into ketosis. It's amazing. Agree with others, it can be tricky to get right and tough to stick with. It's ideal for short term weight loss imho.

It's just really tough to stick with. Had to cut out tonnes of healthy foods to remain so low carb. A single banana is almost all daily carbs, I am not exaggerating! Also, we have no idea what the long term consequences of a keto diet are. I lost a stone and a half fairly quickly, then increased my carb intake.

Omg I want this so much! I feel like I’m nearly fat sick and nearly dead and so unhealthy!

what kind of things did you eat? Scared of eating to much meat

I'm not totally keto but very low carb, high fat. I eat meat, eggs, cheese, butter, full fat yogurt. No low fat stuff, no sweetners.
I have lost 2 stone and feel much better, more energy, no cravings. The first week coming off sugar was brutal, my head was thumping and I felt awful, but after that I was fine!

TwinkleTwinkleLittleCat · 12/04/2023 19:32

Forgot to say I read "it's not a diet" by Davinia Taylor. This is what inspired me.

Almond milk, Greek yog, avocados, eggs, chicken breasts, nuts, seeds (pumpkin, chia), chickpeas.

As I said, fruits and veg made things surprisingly tough because of their carb content. I had to under eat them to stay in ketosis, I'd slip out and feel shit even though I was eating so healthily! A low carb diet is preferable.

Try calorie deficit before you cut out any one food group.

It's changed my life with regards to the way I look at food.

I started at the beginning of January and I've lost 40lb.

I restrict no food groups. I eat healthy in the main, but I also have treats when I want. I just account for them.

The app Nutracheck is so good and easy to use.

Not sure if you are on tiktok, but some of the calorie deficit content creators are amazing to follow. So knowledgeable.

All I can say, is it works so good for me, like a switch has gone off and everything has just clicked into place.

Also, I was put off doing it thinking, can't be arsed weighing and all that, but it's not like that after a while. I quite like doing it when I have to.

It's definitely not the ball ache you imagine it is going to be.

GettingThereCharleyBear · 12/04/2023 19:42

@Comby, thank you - and did u keep the weight off?

BodGaoithe · 12/04/2023 19:47

I did it strictly for a couple of years and lost 4 stone (size 18 down to a 10.) Now I am semi-keto/ low carb. I have the odd carby treat, but it makes me feel so hungry again when I do! Day to day, for normal dinners and lunches, I still more or less eat what I did on strict keto.

I also did intermittent fasting for a fair while (only eating between midday and 6) which really helped too. I eat between about 11 and 7/8 now so not as strict, but 6:18 was much easier to stick to during lockdown!

Thecaravan · 12/04/2023 19:47

I did it in 2020 and lost 10kg quickly, within a couple of months, which took my weight down lower than pre-kids. 3 years on have maintained that weight loss through eating lowish carb and not eating til noon, but generally eating whatever I want at weekends. Try it and see. First couple of weeks can be tough going but persevere for a month or two and see what you think.

Comby · 12/04/2023 19:48

I agree, you definitely don't need keto to lose weight. I wanted to try it.
Don't forget to work out how much you should be eating. Very easy to overeat.

Just checked and a few I follow are

Teags.weightloss (she is maintaining now, but loads of easy recipes and fab advice)
Mindfuelbodywithkel
Teamrh.uk
Evidencebased_training (PT related, but his content is funny and explains calorie deficit, why it works etc)

Once you watch a few of these it will pick up your algorithm I'm sure.

Gogogo1 · 12/04/2023 20:48

tgw reason I’m thinking keto is because I feel disgusting eating other foods and carbs seem to trigger eating more carbs

OP posts:
LucifersLight · 12/04/2023 20:57

FWIW a banana is not healthy food, it is equivalent to a mars bar, your body takes both in and converts both to sugar and nothing else.

If you struggle to find things to eat then Fall back on protein rather than carbs. Eggs for breakfast/lunch is ideal.

For snacks (if you have any) stick to nuts and avocados.

AinsleysOnions · 12/04/2023 21:02

I've just started low carb diet last Saturday, as like you I'm a massive carb addict and it has got out of hand. Massive emotional carb eater too. I have found it really easy, I felt crap yesterday for the first time (tired, a bit nauseous) but fine today. No cravings at all and appetite really reduced.

Penelope1703 · 12/04/2023 21:04

I'm a total keto convert and definitely felt bad on / was addicted to carbs.
Rather than going full keto to start, I just decided to eat shitloads of protein. And told myself if I wanted to have carbs too that was ok but protein had to come first. But when you've had a boiled egg and a packet of cold sliced beef from the supermarket you literally can't fit in a frame of carbs as you're so full. Never feel hungry and feel so clear headed and in control of my eating.
