Would you or would you not ban someone who swore once and then immediately apologised?

Just that really ...

Strange situation - in a hotel - one price had been agreed, they wanted to charge a higher price, they wouldn't speak quietly and calmly about it, but shouted at the guest and said there was no point in listening to what she said.

After 15 or so minutes of this, the guest, in enormous frustration did say "For F... Sake, please lets..." and then realising what they'd said, immediately apologised. The guest was rather shocked by what they'd said, having not done this before. She did then pay the higher price.

When they tried to book the hotel again a couple of months later, they discovered they had been banned - was told they had been told this by multiple people, despite there having been no communication.

Is this a banning situation - or do you give someone the benefit of the doubt, given their immediate apologies and contriteness?

I think you were probably banned because of the 15 minute argument, not the one swear word.

Daisyoo · 12/04/2023 13:10

What was their reason for the higher price? Why woukd you want to go back after that, unless it was your own fault?

JaneJeffer · 12/04/2023 13:10

I wouldn't have paid more after a price had been agreed on.

itsgettingweird · 12/04/2023 13:10

I guess they can ban anyone they want.

But why would a hotel also think it's ok to charge a higher place than agreed and let their staff be rude to the guest for over 15 minutes about it.

I wouldn't want to return to that hotel - banned or not!

PricklyFoot · 12/04/2023 13:11

Why do you want to go back if they charged more than agreed?

I doubt that it was one swear word that led the the ban.

maddiemookins16mum · 12/04/2023 13:18

The 15 min argument got you banned. Lucky escape if they take the piss with their charges.

DemonCopperhead · 12/04/2023 13:20

I doubt it happened exactly as you say it did and that’s why you were banned

Changingggggggggggg · 12/04/2023 13:20

Unfortunately it is where a student course is run....

You caused a 15 minute long hooha at the front desk. I imagine that's the actual issue.

Lifesagamethentheytaketheboardaway · 12/04/2023 13:22

What do you mean that a price had been agreed?
You don’t haggle with hotels. You book the room at a set price and you get a confirmation. They can’t change that so how was that even happening?

Regardless though, you can’t swear at service staff. It isn’t their fault. They do what they’re told. They deserve a safe working environment free from aggression and swearing. I’d ban you from my place.

Dotjones · 12/04/2023 13:23

Did the guest complain about staff shouting at the guest and if so what response did they get? If not, why not? If they didn't I can see why they were banned, management only heard one side of the story (argumentative guest who didn't want to pay the full rate and swore).

HadEnoughOfBears · 12/04/2023 13:25

Wonder what the hotel's version of this is.

stealthninjamum · 12/04/2023 13:26

I have seen a few signs in businesses saying that aggression towards staff won’t be tolerated so I imagine it’s that. I am proud of my skills of complaining about things but I would never swear at someone who’s just doing their job.

MoroccanRoseHChurch · 12/04/2023 13:35

Businesses can accept/not accept who they want. Reasonableness, or explanations, doesn’t have to come into it.

Changingggggggggggg · 12/04/2023 13:35

I'm not the only one who got harangued... others were too... one chose to leave the hotel, others managed to get the original price honoured.... I was however the only one who swore... which `i have never done before

But how did you have one price when you booked and then end up with another price?
What happened with your original confirmation of the booking price?

BaroldBalonz · 12/04/2023 13:39

If there really was a 15 minute argument, I'm surprised that the guest was even allowed to stay. I feel so sorry for the staff when things like this happen - the guest can (and should have) just walked away, the staff don't have that luxury.

How had the "original" price changed? Did you have confirmation of a price which differed from what you were charged?

So they chose to honour the price for some but totally refused for you?

potatowhale · 12/04/2023 13:41

Sorry but it's their hotel so they can ban you if they want. They don't want pains in the arses who argue for 15 minutes.

Viviennemary · 12/04/2023 13:41

Hard to say. Depends on the circumstances. Why did they change the price.

Changingggggggggggg · 12/04/2023 13:43

Yes original price honoured for some, not for me nor the one who left. They did not confirm in writing - just two phone calls.

But this is really about whether one swear word and an immediate apology would warrant a ban... the rest is just context.....

Yes. Please don't swear at hospitality staff. I'd have removed you from the hotel

CuriouslyDifferent · 12/04/2023 13:45

Please specify what ‘agreed’ means.

Did they actually agree?
Is it in writing?
When did they agree it?

a hotel offering me a deal 6 months ago would not be unreasonable in letting me know a different price when I book next time.

it’s all about context and detail - otherwise how long is a peice of string?

TimeForMeToF1y · 12/04/2023 13:48

It's entirely up to the hotel, theres no universal law on hospitality bans
