To think a grown woman....

Should be able to know how to operate a dishwasher?
New colleague didn't know how to do it. She stacked it correctly but was then standing around looking stumped. I had to intervene and help.
She is 41!

I can’t use a microwave. I’ve never owned one, but tried when visiting someone else’s house.

I’m 56. Shocking!

ThreeblackCats · 12/04/2023 21:12

I take it one driving lesson was more than enough for you to be able to drive op!

what an attitude.

TiedUpWithABlackVelvetBand · 12/04/2023 21:21

ReadersD1gest · 12/04/2023 21:10

Helping to load is hardly operating it. Even the woman in the op could do that 😂. I don't do self catering so that's not an issue for me.

I said I ‘interacted with’, not operated…………? I engage with dishwashers on the daily.

And I have said three times now that I think the OP is being massively unreasonable. 🤷🏻‍♀️

mixedsocks · 12/04/2023 21:34

A grown woman should understand that as we all live different lives there's no one thing that absolutely everyone on this planet "should" know how to do.
I bet there are things that she knows but you don't, because they aren't a prior to you.

polkadotclip · 12/04/2023 21:54

What an amazing thread!

So interesting that so many people have never used a dishwasher, and don't want to.

I respect that, but I am the opposite.

It is on my number one list of things I use that make my life better. Would choose it over a washing machine, even. Definitely makes my life better.

I know someone with 2, and I'm jealous of the idea of always having one clean, which functions as a cupboard, so you don't unload it. and one to put dirty stuff in. Some day...

Anyone for a robot vacuum?

Furries · 12/04/2023 23:03

Blimey, I can’t imagine ever thinking I’d rather wash my clothes by hand than the dishes!

Am slightly tempted to do a “would you rather” in AIBU with a poll attached.

TiedUpWithABlackVelvetBand · 13/04/2023 00:15

Well, put it this way - at home I wouldn’t be without either.

But in a holiday let? Unless it was a long stay, I’d definitely need a dishwasher over a washing machine.

Furries · 13/04/2023 00:45

Well, yeah, a holiday let I can kind of get. Though not really, I mean, how hard is washing up?

But that’s not everyday life. Who on earth, day to day, would rather wash clothes than dishes by hand?

Offensiveapprently · 13/04/2023 02:33

What is odd is butching about it on the Internet. I don't have a dishwasher so wouldn't know either. Is your whole team so fucking horrible too?

Offensiveapprently · 13/04/2023 02:33

bitching

Ndhdiwntbsivnwg · 13/04/2023 06:15

I never seen a dishwasher until I was 30! We never had one growing up, we were too poor… so stop before you judge

Moonshine60 · 13/04/2023 08:24

Never had one at home. Various places of work had them but no instructions for how to use. How are you supposed to know?

VWHoliday · 13/04/2023 08:38

Sometimes when I meet a new microwave I have to ask for instructions.

I think I'm quite intelligent most of the time.

PineapplePomPom · 13/04/2023 09:25

Never in my life have I ever used a dishwasher and I'm 51!

C152 · 13/04/2023 09:25

YABU. I've never owned a dishwasher. How would you expect me to know how to use one?

Uokhon · 13/04/2023 09:55

To think a grown woman feels the need to write on the internet about another woman rather than just help her out and move on.

Luckyduc · 13/04/2023 10:00

I'm 40 and wouldn't have a clue either yet I hold a degree and have travelled the world. Who has a dishwasher these days, such a 1990s trend thats outdated.....its all about saving thr planet now. Dishwashers are for lazy folk.

Don’t be ridiculous, of course they’re not outdated. Modern dishwashers are efficient in their use of both water and electricity. They’re for busy people who have better things to do with their time than stand at the sink.

StrawberryWater · 13/04/2023 10:14

Never owned one and neither has anyone in my family.

I wouldn’t know what to do with it until I’d looked at the instructions, or someone showed me.

Ted27 · 13/04/2023 10:39

@StrawberryWater

same for me.

And its not just about cost. It probably doesnt occur to some people here that many of us don’t have room for a dishwasher.
I don’t even have room for a fridge/freezer - that sits in a tiny lobby between the kitchen and bathroom.
My mums kitchen is so small you can stand in the middle and touch all four walls,

Loveyou3000 · 13/04/2023 12:33

If she does know how to operate a bowl of warm water, a sponge, and some fairy liquid I think she'll be fine.

PoseyFlump · 13/04/2023 14:45

@Ted27 what are you touching the fourth wall with? (Without falling over 😂)

1mabon · 13/04/2023 15:31

Well, all I can say I do hope that you can do everything first time. Many don't have dishwashers or dryers come to that.

potniatheron · 13/04/2023 15:37

I never had one until I was late 30s, so before that I wouldn't have known either. It's not a reflection on intellect, morals or character, don't worry

potniatheron · 13/04/2023 15:50

JoBrodie · 12/04/2023 13:56

I have a dishwasher but I'm a bit scared of it and treat it more like an overengineered (well it's plumbed in and electrified) cupboard ;)

People might enjoy "Microwave Racing" a two-minute video my friend Dominic created as part of a project we were working on a few years ago.

All microwaves do is heat food but they seem to have so many different features which just complicates things. We've actually used this at a science festival as a game, along with getting people (kids and adults) to try and set an alarm on a clock radio. The project was about the design of medical devices and how the design can affect ease of use and safety.

Jo

A friend of mine who lives in New York and therefore eats out mostly and rarely cooks, uses her dishwasher to store knick knacks in :-)
